We're down to our last puppy 𧑠we have her for 9 more days, so at this point she's getting lots more individual training, adventuring, and is transitioning from her puppy pen to being fully integrated into our daily household. At this age, it's so good to get them out for lots of off leash experiences- they have a strong following instinct at this age, because to a puppy this age, because they aren't equipped to survive on their own.
What a great time to get them lots of puppy led exercise and off leash practice! I play little games like changing direction without warning, turning and running and having a party when my puppy catches me. If they stop to sniff, I just keep moving and praise when they catch up. They can learn from a young age they have to keep tabs on you, and not the other way around. They also learn the idea that freedom isn't some huge novelty, and they don't need to zoom and go crazy! I try to get as many off leash experiences for them as I safely can in their first 4 months!
Our puppies had a fun visit with our friends @westernequipmentont ! They got to meet lots of new friends, walk on various types of flooring, and run around the office exploring! Love these fun social outings for the pups!
A windy, freezing rain day = a great day for everybody to enjoy a collagen chew! This was the first time the puppies got to try edible chew treats, and they were entertained for a few hours and barely put a dent in them! We still made it out for house training trips every 2-3 hours, but this made a great bad weather activity!
Snack time! Piper still going strong with nursing! She's a 50 lbs dog nursing 40 lbs of puppies now, which I think deserves a medal π
such a good Momma!
Time for a pen upgrade! Our new space comes complete with lots of leg room for our new puppy legs, empty bottles and metal spoons for a variety of textures and sounds, paw pods to climb, a tunnel, lots of comfy beds, a potty area, lots of tiny toys, a big sister who will steal your tiny toys, and of course one Best Mom β’οΈ
Puppies had their first solid meal today! New high score, not a single face or foot needed to be washed after, such polite eaters!
Who wants to litter train a puppy(s)? πββοΈ Watch the puppies space get an upgrade! Two weeks old tomorrow!

Tiny tidy toes! The puppies are 5 days old, this is their second nail trim. Keeping their toes neat and tidy makes nursing more comfortable for Piper, and helps prevent scratches that could lead to mastitis. It's also good handling experience for the puppies. Why the dremel? I prefer it and find it less stressful. I've used nail clippers in the past but if a puppy moves suddenly I'm much less likely to quick them with a dremel on low vs making a cut, so that's just what I prefer. I grab puppies when they're sleepy and most just doze while I quickly round each nail. Regular nail maintenance is important for the puppy's entire life time, so we try to start good habits early!
Oh and if you have dewclaws (like ours do!) Don't forget to do the dew!!
π½π½π½The puppies are 3 days old! Which means we start our early scent introductionπ½π½π½
Every day from today until day 16, the puppies will get a quick sniff of a novel smelling item. Ideally, the smells should not be food. Today, we are starting with a piece of freshly trimmed cedar.
Why do we do this? It isn't to imprint them on certain smells, we aren't worried about attaching any value to these smells, we are simply enriching the olfactory section of their brain. At birth, puppies actually have more neural connections than they need, and in the first 16 days their brains continue to develop outside the womb. As they develop, the brain starts a kind of synaptic pruning, removing unnecessary neural connections and strengthening connections it deems useful. By exposing them to novel smells daily, the goal is to help the olfactory portion of the brain maintain and strengthen as many neural connections as possible. No sense is more important to a dog then smell!
