With sunlight dappling the trail and autumn leaves fluttering down, Peter Van Eerd — fondly known as “The Flying Dutchman” — made his symbolic last ride during a beautiful Celebration of Life on Sunday, October 26, 2025, hosted at TJ Stables in Chatham.
Legendary in the horse industry, Peter was remembered by nearly 200 family members, friends, and fellow horsemen who came together to honour an extraordinary life — that of a devoted father, brother, horseman, farrier, entertainer, storyteller, and friend.
His daughter Jackie Beattie and sons Tom and Tony shared heartfelt memories of their one-of-a-kind childhood growing up with Peter as their dad. His brother Mies fondly reflected on their early years in Holland, the family’s move to Canada, and Peter’s remarkable athleticism as a wrestler and cyclist — a spirit of determination and adventure that would define him throughout his life.
Olympic Show Jumper Hugh Graham spoke of his younger self and the influences Peter had in his own early years of Rodeo, and the resulting journey as Peter's side kick until Pete fell in love with Veronica, who became his beloved wife.
Peter loved entertaining with his horses, performing unbelievable tricks with Impressive Rae and many equine partners over the years. He inspired Terry Jenkins to pursue her own passion for equine entertainment, often mentoring her in the art of teaching horses to perform for the many school children who visited TJ Stables. In tribute to that inspiration, Terry honoured Peter by performing with her liberty horse, Illusion.
Longtime friends and fellow farriers and horse trainers Craig Black and Jesse Coffell spoke with humour and warmth about the antics and adventures they shared with Peter — travelling the countryside with horses, always finding joy and laughter in prank filled moments, and celebrating the deep bonds that defined their craft and friendship.
These two friends had the honour of swinging Peter’s saddle over the back of a horse for the final time, leading the horse on its last journey as guests followed in quiet reflection while horse and saddle took to the trail once more.
Peter influenced everyone in attendance — each in their own personal horse journey — leaving behind a piece of himself in every life he touched. His legacy rides on in the hearts of those he inspired.
Happy trails, Peter.
