Another wonderful form of Elaphoglossum peltatum. This one originated from extreme NW Ucayali, Peru. Seen here growing in a terrarium. Watch for this form on our website sometime next year. And if you are in the GTA come out to the Reptile and Plant Expo tomorrow December 1 at the International Centre, Hall 2 and you might be able to grab one of these before they make it to our website! A nice colony of Asplenium aff. cuspidatum developing on a mossy branch in a terrarium. These young ferns develop along the thin rhizome of the mother plant which in this case is mounted several inches above these little ones. Many new and rare ferns and other terrarium plants will be coming in the new year. Watch our website for frequent updates and re-stocks.

Lovely growth of mosses and ferns taking hold in the terrarium hardscaped with Peruvian grey pumice and some hafnium moss. Used together they help maintain a stable humidity in the terrarium supporting lush plant growth.

I’ve been in the terrarium hobby a long time and not much in this hobby is more satisfying to me at this time than growing nice colonies of minuscule tropical ferns. There is still a treasure trove of unknown species awaiting discovery within the worlds tropical forests. Given the small size of this fern, Hecistopteris pumila it is not hard to imagine how similar species may be overlooked within the vast expanses of Amazonia. #explore #nature #jungle #tropical #ferns #rareplants #rareferns #terrarium #vivarium #peru #amazon

This terrarium is home to a small colony of Ranitomeya reticulata and Ranitomeya amazonica. Small ferns like this absolutely elfin Cochlidium serrulatum add a very unique touch to a tropical terrarium. Placement is key. They are quite happy to grow nestled in between other plants on a background or branch but can be crowded out easily. In the wild you can often find dense colonies of this species on a shaded rock face or mossy log. It’s often easy to overlook as simply moss. It’s fairly ubiquitous throughout neotropical montane forests.
