Posh struggles to have any training or fun end when she is off leash. She does not want to just get in the vehicle. She would do all kinds of avoidance behaviours which could be frustrating at times. I used to just leash up early but wanted to progress beyond this. I have found asking her to kennel and then just sitting on the edge of the vehicle waiting that she is getting in faster all the time. Once she does get in she gets praise and some high value rewards. Of course during this time Frankie is receiving praise and rewards as she gets in every time. 😊🐾. Over time I expect she will create a habit of hopping in as soon as she is asked. I did not want to form a habit of avoidance.

There are times a more mature dog is a better fit for your lifestyle. Lots of lovely dogs need new homes due to various circumstances.

A student in a group class once asked me how much time I spent training my young dog. If I was training a specific behaviour such as stand it would be various little short and fun bits of time. Raising my puppy or young dog is different. I am teaching her how to live with me. When she first came home she was a little sponge and was constantly learning. She was learning how to live with us not obedience where I micromanage and tell her what to do but just how to coexist and have a positive relationship. This is what I want for my clients pups and this makes learning fun for both ends of the leash.
