This mama did an absolutely fantastic job getting this 15lbs lamb out on her own!!!! The orange tinge on his wool is from being ‘meconium stained’. This shows that the lamb was stressed during delivery, but mama did her job getting him out!

She then continued to push, due to reflexes her in vaginal canal, and pr*****ed her uterus right now.

After an epidural and washing her uterus, it was replaced back inside and a retaining suture was placed just in case she tried to push things out again. This will be removed in 24 hours by the producer.

Great, prompt, work by this mama and her producer!

Beyond the stethoscope and the surgical table, there’s a mare who has been one of my greatest mentors. Her name may not be in any textbook, but her lessons are etched in my heart.

She taught me the power of patience and the importance of truly listening to our animal patients, communicating through trust and understanding. She reminded me that healing is not just about medicine but about compassion and connection.

She was very sick, and every day, she showed me what resilience means, bouncing back from setbacks with grace and determination. She’s one of the reasons I strive to be the best veterinarian I can be, inspired by her strength.

This mare has shown me that the essence of our profession goes beyond science; it’s about the deep bonds we share with our animal friends, and the clients who trust us with their care. She’s my constant reminder of why I chose this path and why I’m dedicated to improving their lives.

She has not only made me a better practitioner, but a better human being.

Dear valued clients,

It is with mixed emotions that we announce the departure of our dear colleague, Sarah Dykeman, from our farm animal practice front office. After a few years of outstanding service and dedication, Sarah has decided to move on to new opportunities, and while we are sad to see her go, we are excited for her next chapter.

Throughout her time at our practice, Sarah has been an essential part of our team, always going above and beyond to ensure that our clients and their farm animals received the best possible care. Her warm personality, outstanding attention to detail, and willingness to go the extra mile have earned her the trust and admiration of clients and colleagues alike. She has been a true asset to our team, and we will miss her dearly.

As we say goodbye to Sarah, we want to take this opportunity to celebrate her contributions to our practice. She has been a source of positivity and inspiration to everyone she has worked with, and her impact will be felt for years to come. We are incredibly grateful for all she has done for our practice and the farm animal community, and we wish her all the best in her future endeavours.

We invite you to join us in congratulating Sarah on her next adventure and thanking her for her hard work and dedication to our practice and this wonderful community.

Thank you, The Miller Vet Team

Some sad news - Miller Vet Service will no longer be a turtle triage location for the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre. The staff member who initiated the program and did the majority of the care for the turtles is starting a new job this month!
However, fear not! There will still be a local triage location for all those turtles needing help! So if you do come across an injured turtle this season please still call the turtle conservation centre at (705) 741-5000 and they can direct you on where to drop the turtle off!

It's National animal poison prevention week!
Farms are busy places and require lots of different supplies - some of which can cause serious illness or death in animals if not stored or used properly. There can also be various toxins in the environment that you need to be cognizant of and keep livestock away from.
The most common causes of poisoning on the farm are:
- lead
- toxic plants (what is toxic to one species may not affect others, research what can be dangerous to your animals!)
- heat, cold, or drought-stressed plants
- insecticides and herbicides
- moldy hay
- rodenticide
Always be aware of what you have on your farm that could be toxic to your animals and take steps to prevent any accidental ingestion. If you are ever concerned your animals have gotten into a toxic substance call your veterinarian!

As many of you know we are a triage centre for turtles for the Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre! They will direct injured turtles found in the area to be dropped off to us where we can provide triaging care until there is a driver available to get the turtle to their centre in Peterborough! We're looking for donations of towels and rubbermaid bins (they don't need to have lids!) to help us safely transport the turtles. If you have any to spare and can drop them off at the clinic we (and the turtles!) would be so grateful!

It's National Poultry day! DYK chickens were domesticated over 4000 years ago from the wild jungle fowl of Southeast Asia? They've been an incredibly important animal in agriculture providing meat and eggs, and humans have introduced them to every continent except Antarctica!
So take a moment today to thank chicken :)

It’s the end of winter and you know what that means! The lice are getting real cozy on your cattle! Lice are more prevalent on cattle in the winter when it’s cooler and when cattle are housed more closely together. This can have a negative impact on your herd. If an animal is weakened and parasites are taking their blood they are more susceptible to pneumonia, scours and other infections.
There are two types of lice on cattle – sucking lice which suck blood, and biting lice which feed on dander and debris on the skin. Both cause discomfort and itchiness for your animals. To effectively treat lice in your herd it’s important to treat all the cattle at the same time, as untreated animals can pass lice back to treated animals, and to treat in a way that will kill all adult lice as well as those that hatch out after initial treatment.
No lice treatment currently available will kill the louse eggs. The life cycle of the louse is 28 days – so even if you kill all the adults, in 28 days those that hatched out after treatment will become adults and the problem will start up again. Treating the cattle at this 28 day mark will effectively kill this new generation but is not always convenient for the farmer. One product, Clean Up II, which we are beginning to stock, is effective at killing adult lice but also has a growth inhibitor that prevents the hatched out nymphs from growing into adults – making one treatment much more effective!
If you’d like to try this product for your herd give us a call and we can ensure we have it ordered for you!
