Just a couple of hungry new hatchlings on the hunt for food! π
If the rain holds off through the week this next set of babies should be ready for kits beginning next weekend π¦
The first meal of the newly hatched Painted Lady Butterfly larvae is it's own protein-rich shell.
Here's one of our newly hatched round 2 babies enjoying it's first meal post hatching!

For those of you who were interested in our baby bettas, they're doing fantastic! They're now 3 weeks post-spawning, and are around 1/ 2" long... finally big enough to easily see with the naked eye. They enjoy thrice daily meals of live vinegar eels, live baby brine shrimp, and I've just started them on some commercial fry food as well.
One more week or so and they should slowly start developing some colours, which we're super excited to see! We should have a gorgeous kaleidoscope of koi babies... hoping to see a lot of metallic blues, purples and yellows in the mix π
I created a new FB page for anyone who wants to follow along with the babies' development as well as see when they will be available for purchase, as I don't want to annoy the butterfly purists with baby fish! Hop on over and like this page if you want to watch the baby fish grow!

Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours! π¦
This guy gives 6 thumbs up to some fresh Viburnum nectar! π
The current larvae are nearly ready to be placed into kits for those who preordered. After that we should have a handful of kits later next week, then we're done for 2023!

Zip!
We have been receiving reports that some folks have had butterflies emerge over the last few days, and we finally had our first one eclose today! (Eclosion is the term for a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis)
If you look carefully, you can watch this new butterfly hard at work doing two things- 1- inflating it's new wings and 2- zipping it's proboscis together! When a butterfly first encloses, it's proboscis is actually in two segments/strips, and the butterfly must work quickly to zip the two strips together to form a long straw like structure which it can use to sip nectar and feed! By rolling the segments in and out, they will eventually 'zip' together to form the final proboscis. If the butterfly is unable to zip it's proboscis, it will be unable to feed and will die.

We're on our way home, and to say the caterpillar eggs we left with enjoyed the trip- we had sun and awesome weather all weekend- is an understatement. We had an explosion of hatching eggs while we were away!
In a few more days I will start preparing the May preorders, following by preparation of surplus kits for sale. Barring anything going wrong with these guys, we are doing very well and anticipate having lots of kits available soon! π¦
Good morning and happy Saturday!
We woke up today to find our first two J shapes of the year! By the end of the day, we should have our first two chrysalids. Those with larvae from the first set of the year should be starting to see J shapes and chrysalids soon, if you haven't already.
Check out this amazing video sent to us by Melissa Woodward- a time lapse of her J-shaped larvae making it's chrysalis!

Day 3!
It's usually around this point where I start to reevaluate my life choices, because the larvae start to become far more mobile and make it their life's mission to escape the nursery π€¦π»ββοΈπ Hundreds of 2mm caterpillars escaping constantly makes for a busy few days around here!
The larvae are about 50% hatched now, and are still in their first instar. I hope to see signs of molting and second instar babies within the next day or two! π¦
