Jasmine

I almost lost one of my girls last year. Jasmine is 7 years old and a chewer. For all these years, I have no problems with her swallowing pieces of toys, socks, etc. But in mid November, I came home from work, and she would not eat. Nothing unusually, some days dogs just are not hungry. I found a piece of my grandson toy chewed up on the floor. But then into the night, she starts vomiting, and the next day would not move, and she was not her happy little self. I took her in right away and an Xray showed she had a piece of toy lodged in her small intestine. Very costly procedure.

They needed to operate immediately and even then, they said that intestinal surgeries are complicated, and they could not guarantee she would make it. My heart broke.

Surgery was completed later that night, but a watchful eye needed to be kept on her for 48 hours. There was a 1″ piece of rubber toy lodged in her intestine. Jasmine was released to me 2 days later, quite sore, and only allowed chicken broth, rice and boiled chicken for weeks. She did well and recovered fully. However, this could turn the other way. I had to keep her from jumping up, running for weeks to allow the inner incision to heal or her intestine could burst and that would be fatal. Intestine blockage is fatal within 3 days.

Just a warning to anyone with a chewer, keep your children’s toys up and away from reach, it is just an accident waiting to happen. I reside with my daughter and grandson and was not at home at the time. My grandson, who is 4, had no idea that giving his toy to her would cause this. So, please explain to your children their toys are not good and can make their favorite pet sick if they chew on them.
Also, when you see a dog toy starting to fall apart, please take it away. Do not buy inexpensive rubber toys, they can easily tear off a piece and swallow.

My Belle
Belle is a unknow age, but she is grey around her face and legs. Belle had a large lump removed last year on her right hip. It was malignant, started to be a small bump then grew the size of a tennis ball within a week.

The vet said she may end up having problems later that side, due to her age and she developed arthritis in her hips. She has a terrible time standing up and struggles now on that side and as any dog owner, you feel heartbroken that you can do little to help. Once she gets up I try to make her walk around each time to get her hip joint exercised. I too have arthritis, osteoporosis in my knees and lower back, so we are quite the pair some days. I give her massages; she loves my hand held one I use on my back.

She is now at the point where she is losing bladder control, but she still has a lot of s***k and life in her. The vet agrees. However, someone who has never owned a pet recently commented to put her down instead of putting up with cleaning up after her. I could only shake my head and walked away. Anyone that owns and loves their pets know when it is time, my Belle still likes to stand outside on the deck and bark at the birds, get excited when she sees another dog walking by, cuddles up.

I have had her for 8 years now. She was found in the city with pups, trying to care for them, abandoned by her owner. She and her pups were placed in a foster home, and they worked very hard with her. Belle has high anxiety, and this can be mistaken for aggression. Her pups were adopted quickly, and Belle was adopted by a single mom in a rented townhouse. Within a week she advertised her. I fell in love with Belle, and at that time I just recently lost my lab to cancer, and I was looking for a companion for Grace, my other lab. Belle is part boxer, chocolate lab. I brought her to the house for the weekend to see if they would get along. Best of buds. Belle is just a loving animal, all she wanted was for someone to love her back and have a better life and I plan to keep giving her that till she tells me different.

I just recently had a major scare with Jasmine, my little bishon, collie cross, the black one. She swallowed a chunk of grandson rubber toy and it got lodged in her small intestine. No one in the house knew she got it till it was too late and dogs do eat things all the time. We did not know she swallowed a larger piece, but two days later she refused to eat or move, I took her in, and ther it was, stuck in her intestine. A wonderful vet at Santuary Vet Hospital, recommended by my Vet office, took her immediately and performed surgery to remove it. She is well now, and was lucky to survive the surgery.

So please, watch out for the kids toys laying on the floor, and as the vet said, the ones you buy.. It only takes a minute for your dog to grab it and pull off a piece. Please keep an eye on your furry ones during this season.

Miss lulu training has come to an end, and my services to the family is still there for them if needed. So Miss Lulu has perfected all her skills in basic obedience,, wonderful! Now that Mon is home full time she is eager to spend time each day with walking Lulu in the park and her nieghbourhood and keeping up her skills. She has developed a bad habit of barking at noises and people passing by the house, so I spent some time showing Karla how to get this under control. Lulu is great at learning skills, she definetly likes being rewarded verbally and getting her treats. Karla has told me she did well when they went camping, had no problems with her, so that is great.

She is a good dog, so affectionate, playful and hyper. I have shown them some dog games (hide and seek, for example) to use to release all that energy. I also suggested Karla set up a circuit in the back yard to use as a game and training tool to keep Lulu hyperness under control.

I am proud of this family, they put in the time with their new friend and that definetly contributed to Lulu's good behavior skills. Their friend, Lorna has been helpful in the training process as well. Thank you. Keep up the good work team!

Well, hello everyone. Hope your day is going well.

I am starting tonight with a new client who got a German Shepard pup back in January. Apparently they have not spent a lot of time with him and he is exhibiting some destructive behavior and well just not listening. He only knows how to sit right now.
So first step, will be to teach Apollo the basic;'s, He was born beginning of January so we are catching him at the right time to socialize him and have he become a well mannered family dog.
The only problem I see is getting the family to spend quality training time each day with Apollo.

HI everyone. This past Wednesday we took Miss Lulu to the off lease area. However, we kept her on a 20 ft lease. Karla, was instructed to choose a spot on the lease for her comfort on how far she was willing to let Miss Lulu go before she wanted her to return to her side. The other reason to keep her on lease for a few weeks is to give her safety zones and build her confidence in new areas, new people, new encounters with her furry kind. This way if she is in fear of types of breeds or sizes, Karla is able to give her a safety zone by not having her runoff in the wrong direction, but to gently pull her back to her side so Lulu feels safe.

After a few sessions of letting her go to the distance Karla was comfortable with and doing Recall, Lulu came back every time, ok, well until she decided to investigate the area where the birds were sitting in...lol. But that is ok. She was coming back when called after playing too. Excellant.

We found out Lulu is fearful of larger dogs, so we kept her close by side as they approached. She would quickly retreat in the other direction tail tucked. We did allow the owners with calm, well trained dogs, to approached to a reasonable space to Lulu. She got better at the end, however she is still very hesitant with large dogs and that is ok. It will take time. Slow and steady, no rushing.

Lulu really like dogs her size, we met Charlie, a pug who was very playful and Lulu and her played togerther for some time. Then there were dogs on leases that were not good at approaching, lunging, too anxious pulling hard. So we just walked away and gave the distance. We do not want this, unexpected consequences can happen, so just give distance, and go.

During all this,, I taught Karla and her daughter to observe Lulu's body language and that of other dogs approaching. They gained a whole new insight and are now aware of what to watch; Lulu body language to tell them when she needs her safety zone, her playful and approach moves. They could see how approaching dogs body language was telling them and what to avoid and what is acceptable.

Once again, very smart girl, after a few other dogs her size, approaching her calmly, she quickly caught on and started doing the same.

With mom premission, here is proud Karla and her daughter (I do not include children's name on my posts) with Lulu at the end of the lesson. Awesome job ladies.

Miss Lulu was taken to a park on Wednesday to enhance her skills on Recall. We used a 20 ft. lease and her family members stood 12 ft apart in a big circle. One by one, Lulu was called over, she did great. She was not allowed her treat until she sat down calmly in front of the family member. She got that down pat. At first, she roaned off to see the distractions, but by the end of the session she completely ignored any dogs, kids or people walking close by.

Then we did some hide and seek in the back yard. Had lots of awesome hidding places there. This game helps her seek out her owner if she cannot see them in site. Wonderful job she did.

Karla says she is much better on the lease, using the Search method to keep her focus on her and not the distractions. She said Lulu has gotten so much better. We also took some time to help Lulu stay in place when someone is at the door. She gets bery excited and likes to rush at the door. Have to work on this one some more. Once again, great job to Karla and her family.

Our next adventure is to slowly introduce her to the off lease park. Lulu will be on a lease for the first few times in order to show her how to greet other dogs properly and to allow other dogs to greet her.

Hi everyone. Hope you are all coping with this heat wave. Remember to keep your dogs inside, very short walks. Spray their bellies with cool water if they are panting too much. This helps cool them down.

I had Miss Lulu on Wednesday and we met at the walkway by the canal in Chestermere. We were practicing her skills with focusing on her owner by playing a game, Search. It helps her switch her focus from oncomers or other dogs to her owner. She did very well. She is improving on lease pulling We also did Recall using a long lease.
She is very good at recall, being on the lease for now. Lulu has some new games to practice at home until the heat wave is over. She is turning 9 months old. Heads up to her owner, Karla for doing a great job on practicing with Lulu at home.
We did have one small incident. A gentleman with a rather large dog allowed his to lunge at Lulu and that owner thought it was ok. But it is not. Unfortunately we were tucked in at the corner of the gateway and had no where to pull away. Poor Lulu, she pulled back eyes wide and stood stiff, this is not good. Dogs should not be lunging at each other, this could create a unsafe enviornment.

HI everyone, hope your day is going great so far.
Later tonight, Miss Lulu will be introduced to a new world. We are taking her to the walkway at the canal in Chestermere. We will be introducing some games to help her control distractions and focus on her owner. It is suppose to be nice and cool later here, maybe a little rain. Great weather to bring her out. I will post some pics of her later. She such a cutie.

I decided after 7 years of constantly brushing out my little Jasmine every week, that it was not helping with the constant matting. You see Jasmine is like her sister, Penny, who are part Bichon and border Collie. Penny has always just had the Bichon fur and looks like Bichon, but Jazz looks like a tiny little Collie, black hair and all, but underneath lies a nasty coat of bichon fur. So I shaved her down, like I do Penny. Tried to leave her tiny little collie looking face as much as possible, because I love her scruffy looks. So the pic on the left is before, the one on the right is after. Took me almost two hours and I still need to trim here and there.

Last week we started training on correcting Lulu's approach to other people and dogs on her walks. Lulu gets overly excited when people approach, jumping, pulling. Although she is friendly we needed to work on her approach. By the end of the hour, she stopped her jumping and pulling when others came near. Still need some work but so much better.

Lulu still gets way too excited when another dog approaches. She still jumps and pulls. She wants so bad to meet the other dogs, but we still need to work on her approach to dogs. She was focusing on her Owner while walking, talking a glimpse here and there. That is a good thing.

I met a very cute cockapoo called Lulu tonight. Back in December I met the future owners who wanted some advice on getting a puppy for the family for the first time. Awesome family. Well, they have done a super job so far on the advice I gave them and taught Lulu a few tricks too, my favorite is the High Ten. Lulu is very hyper and easily distracted. So we are working on more basic training skills (focus, stay, and come, settle) and some brain games to help her with all that extra energy. She is a very smart little girl and learns fast. When Lulu had this down pat in the house, we moved her outside and started all over. She now knows the commands in and outside. We will be working on her leash pulling and her separation anxiety too. Hands up to the family for doing such a good job. Keep practicing team.

Hi everyone. The pictures of the dogs on my page are two of my three dogs. Young and now older. The black one is Jasmine, and the brown one is Penny. She actually looks more on the copper side, so my daughter, Natalie suggested the name. Belle, whose picture I posted, is unknown age, we figure about 12-13 years old. She is a boxer/chocolate lab. I adopted her about 8 years ago. She was found with 12 puppies alone in the city. All her pups were adopted but her. I fell in love with her. She loves to talk to you. She rounds up her mouth and does this a cross between a small bark and howl when you ask her how her day went when you come home.
The two on my cover page are from the same litter. Yes! The father was a bichon and the mother a border collie. How that happened is anyone guess. All of them looked like Jasmine, except for Penny. I found them in Langdon 6 year ago when they were only 8 weeks old.
I went out there to get Penny, but when I arrived the runt of the litter, Jasmine, attache herself to me and, well, that was that. I got both.
