As the temperatures drop, it’s important to protect our furry friends from the cold. 🐕🐈 While they may have fur coats, our pets are just as vulnerable to the chill as we are!

Here are some winter safety tips:
🌡️ Keep Pets Indoors: Prolonged exposure to cold can lead to frostbite or hypothermia. Limit outdoor time, especially for short-haired or smaller breeds.
🧥 Bundle Up: If your pet tolerates it, invest in a cozy sweater or jacket for walks.
🚗 Watch for Winter Hazards: Antifreeze is toxic to pets, and ice-melting salts can irritate their paws. Wipe their paws after outdoor adventures.
🐾 Create a Warm Space: Make sure your pet has a warm, comfortable place to rest away from drafts.
🍖 Adjust Feeding: Pets may burn more calories in cold weather—talk to your vet about their diet needs.

Remember, if it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them! Keep them warm, safe, and snuggled up where they belong—indoors with you. 🏠💕

🐾 Have questions about winter pet care? Our team at Chestermere Veterinary Clinic is here to help!

Holiday Pet Safety Alert! 🐾🎄

The holiday season is almost upon us and with it brings a spread of delicious treats, but some of our favorite seasonal ingredients can be dangerous to pets. Here’s a quick guide to help keep your furry family safe!

Cinnamon: While tasty for us, cinnamon in high doses (like in powder or essential oils) can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and even heart issues in pets. Keep it safely stored!

Nutmeg: Found in many festive dishes, nutmeg can upset your pet’s stomach or worse—large amounts may lead to disorientation, high blood pressure, or seizures.

Onions: Whether raw, fried, or powdered, onions are a big NO for pets. They can damage red blood cells, leading to anemia, with symptoms that might not appear immediately.

Garlic: Even small amounts can harm pets. Garlic, like onions, can destroy red blood cells, and its effects can be serious—especially in cats and small dogs.

Chocolate: Theobromine in chocolate is toxic for pets. The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous it is. Just one unattended chocolate treat could be fatal.

Fatty Turkey & Bones: Stick to plain white turkey meat with no skin for your pets. Dark meat is high in fat and can lead to pancreatitis, and bones can splinter and cause internal harm.

Xylitol-Sweetened Foods: This sugar substitute is deadly for dogs, even in small amounts. Found in sugar-free gums, baked goods, and candies, xylitol can cause liver failure and life-threatening hypoglycemia.

Grapes, Raisins or Currants: Often found in holiday breads, fruitcakes and puddings.
Dogs cannot metabolize tannins, flavonoids, and monosaccharides from grapes, kidney damage, failure and even death can occur.

Share this with other pet lovers to help make this holiday season happy and safe for all. 🐶🐱✨

Protect Those Precious Paws this Winter! ❄️🐾

As winter approaches, remember that pet paws are as sensitive to the cold as our hands and faces. Here’s how to keep them safe:

Prevent Frostbite: Pets’ paws can be vulnerable to frostbite. Clear off any ice buildup right away, as frostbitten skin may turn red, gray, or white and could start peeling. If you notice these signs, warm the area gently with a moist towel and consult your vet as soon as possible. Keep fur between the toe pads trimmed short so the hair does not accumulate as much ice and snow on walks.

Beware of Salt & Ice-Melting Chemicals: The chemicals used to melt snow can burn your pet’s paws and even their mouth if licked. After each walk, wipe your pet’s paws with a damp towel to remove any salt or residue.

Choose Pet-Safe Products: Check labels for non-toxic ice melts to keep your pet’s environment safe.

Dog booties can be a great option for cold winter walks.

Using common sense can make a big difference in keeping pets comfortable and protected all winter long. Keep those paws warm and healthy so your furry friends can enjoy the season too! 🐶🐱💙

🐾 Protect Your Dog from Leptospirosis! 🐾

Leptospirosis is a serious bacterial disease that can affect both pets and humans. Most common in tropical areas and warmer climates with lots of rainfall, but it can occur anywhere. Spread through water or soil contaminated with infected animal urine, leptospirosis can lead to kidney and liver damage and can even be life-threatening for dogs.

Why Vaccinate?
🛡️ Prevention: The vaccine helps protect your pet from this potentially deadly disease.
🚫 Zoonotic Risk: Leptospirosis can spread from animals to humans, so vaccinating pets also helps protect families.
🌧️ Increased Risk Outdoors: Dogs that travel to warmer moist climates, enjoy water, live in rural areas, or come into contact with wildlife are especially at risk.

Signs of Leptospirosis to Watch For:
🔹 Fever
🔹 Vomiting
🔹 Lethargy
🔹 Muscle pain
🔹 Increased thirst and urination

💉 Talk to Your Vet: Ask about the leptospirosis vaccine and whether it’s right for your dog’s lifestyle. Protecting your dog is a step toward protecting your whole family!

Stay safe, stay healthy, and let’s keep our dogs happy and protected. ❤️

Cold Weather Pet Safety Tips ❄️🐾

As the temperatures drop, it’s important to keep your pets safe and warm! Here are a few essential tips for winter care:

Limit Outdoor Time – Shorten outdoor walks and always supervise your pets when they’re outside, even if they have thick fur.

Bundle Up – Pets with short fur may need a coat or sweater for extra warmth during walks.

Paw Patrol – Wipe your pet’s paws after walks to remove salt, ice, and any chemicals that could irritate their skin.

Stay Hydrated – Cold air can cause dehydration too! Ensure your pets have access to fresh water.

Anti-Freeze Alert 🚨 – Antifreeze can be deadly to pets. Its sweet taste may attract them, but even a small amount is toxic. Keep it stored safely and clean up any spills right away.

Watch for Frostbite – Check paws, ears, and tails for signs of frostbite (pale or cold skin). Seek veterinary care if you notice anything unusual.

Warm Sleeping Spots – Make sure your pet has a warm, dry spot to rest indoors, away from drafts.

Keep your furry friends safe this winter! 🐶🐱❄️

Honoring Remembrance Day with Our Pets 🌺🐾

This Remembrance Day, as we pause to honor the brave men and women who have served, we are reminded of the comfort our pets bring during times of hardship. Many animals have also played important roles throughout history, providing companionship and support to soldiers.

Let’s take a moment today to remember not only the human heroes but also the service animals who have stood by their side.

Wishing you and your pets a peaceful Remembrance Day. 🌹🐾
