Beagles are being tested on inside Victorian laboratories right now.

Beagles like Freckle.

When someone meets Freckle, he lifts his paw up to them.

It looks cute, but the reason is heartbreaking.

Beagle puppies in labs are conditioned to lift their paw when approached so their blood can be tested, again and again.

Freckle is so anxious about visiting the vet that someone must come out to the car and sedate him before he can endure even a simple health check.

That’s because vet clinics look a little bit like the labs where these gentle and trusting dogs are purposely infected and have medicines tested on them before they are either surrendered or killed.

Tragically, beagles like Freckle are test subjects because they are less reactive and easier to exploit than other dogs, because of their gentle nature.

Freckle was 8 years old before he was finally freed from animal testing.

As I continue to fight cruel and un-scientific animal research, the least we can do is implement a retirement age to ensure that they have the time to find safe and loving homes.

In 2022, 3,979 dogs and 533 cats were used for testing, research and teaching in Victoria.

Some of these animals were then killed, despite potentially being healthy.

As well as beagles, greyhounds are also exploited in laboratories – are we at all surprised that the racing industry has resorted to dumping their discards at labs when they are done exploiting them on the track?

At the very least, they deserve to be rehomed.

In 2021, a Taskforce on Rehoming Pets that the Animal Justice Party secured and chaired made a recommendation to implement mandatory rehoming of dogs and cats in laboratories, and the funding to make it possible.

In 2022, the Victorian Government said it would consider creating a policy to do just that.

This was great news, but they still haven’t done it (classic).

Meanwhile, NSW have secured a ‘right to rehome’ policy in New South Wales with $7M for rehoming groups and $4.5M for finding animal-free research alternatives.

Here in Victoria, our government had also said it would consider a grant program to support this kind of rehoming and rehabilitation for animals in laboratories.

It’s time for them to come good on their word, and support Victoria's right to rehome.

BFA also rescues cats from testing, and is in the midst of taking in 34 cats from a facility that is closing.

It brings great sadness to let you know that this afternoon Jens “Lil Evil” passed away peacefully at the age of 17. He will forever be missed. He was that one in a million dog that loved every person and animal that he met. All he wanted out of life was cuddles, treats & adventures. My wife brought him home to us when he was 6 months old. He had been returned by many other families during the adoption weekend and it must’ve been fate because he fit in right away with our family. 🐾❤️🐾
