This weeks #TakeMeHomeTuesday from the CARE Centre is Kimchi! Here is what they have to say about her ❤🐶🐾
This week we are featuring the beautiful “Kimchi”! Kimchi was found as a stray, but it is clear this girl has been loved! She knows several tricks already, and she was elated when she saw a crate and ran right in and laid down! Kimchi is still pretty new at CARE and once the weather allows, we will test her sociability with other dogs. So far she seems absolutely lovely in every way. We estimate her to be 4-7 years old and she looks to be "mostly" German Shepherd. Interested in Kimchi? Email [email protected] for more info!
Dr. Cheryl Linaksita and Chia would like to remind all pet owners about the importance of at home dental care!
Dental disease is one of the most commonly diagnosed conditions in our pets. Just like in people, plaque is a sticky film that coats teeth, made from leftover food, saliva, and bacteria. This biofilm of bacteria results in inflammation and infection of the gums and tooth roots! Bad breath is not normal (a common myth) and could indicate tooth decay or other health issues.
While dental chews/treats/bones can help prevent further plaque accumulation, the best way to prevent dental disease is with regular tooth brushing. It takes plaque 3-5 days to solidify into calculus which cannot be brushed off, so any frequency of brushing is better than none! All that's needed is a small gentle bristled brush (pediatric) and pet friendly toothpaste. Dr. Cheryl would like to note that it may appear that she is brushing vigorously because Chia is very relaxed and her body is moving with the brush, but she is using minimal pressure throughout. Gentle brushing is recommended and all that is required! (See comments below for tips and tricks on adding toothbrushing to you and your pets routine).
Wishing everyone a great holiday season and good dental health!
Cooper says it's the long weekend, don't forget to treat yourself!🐾
Do you know that you can train your cat to do what you want. It is a bit different than training your dog and definitely requires a lot of patience. Just as they say "Cats have staff". So, how do we, the staff, train our cats? Other than patience, persistency, consistency, and frequency are needed. Also, the most important part of training is TREATS! Positive reinforcement is a must. The younger the cat, the easier it is to train. When your cat finally does what you want, give them a treat. Soon enough they will know that "if they do X, they will get Y". And you can continue on with the next challenge. Watch our Dr. Van Nobelen's cat sit, shake hand, and do fist bump before getting a treat. Training a cat can be with or without verbal command. The gestural command is more important than verbal command.
There are many fun things that you can do with your cats. You can take your indoor cats for a walk on a leash, hiking with you, kayaking, or take them on your SUP board. See Instagram for further inspirations! If you take your cat to do water sport with you, they must have their own PFD on.
Pain and analgesia after a surgical procedure
We at Cottonwood Veterinary Clinic do not want our patients to be in pain after any procedure! We approach pain after surgery using our knowledge and understanding of physiology, and create a pharmacologic plan to minimise discomfort wherever possible. We provide systemic (pain relief for the entire body) and local (numbing at the surgical site) analgesia, before any cut is made. We start treating pain before any is experienced, as this has shown to significantly decrease the amount of pain perceived during and after surgery. During recovery from anaesthesia, our dedicated staff make sure our patient’s anxiety, stress, and fear are kept to a minimum since we know that fear can exacerbate pain. Our goal is to send your pet home feeling as comfortable as possible, with an analgesic plan specific for them.
The video shows Bastet right after his neuter, enjoying a pain free recovery period and playing with an improvised toy!
