The pros and cons of free-flying:

Based on my own experience and some common sense, here are some thoughts to consider, should you want to let your budgie free-fly in your home or outdoors.

The Pros:
Unfortunately there are not many.

1. The budgie gets exercise.
2. He has freedom to fly wherever the space allows.
3. He gets to fly to you and spend time with you by playing with your hair or nibbling on your ear.

The Cons:
1. The budgie becomes disoriented and flies in to a wall, resulting in injury. This often happens if the budgie is young and doesn’t know his new place.
2. He gets caught in something, can’t get loose and panics by trying to fly away and thereby injures himself.
3. He sees an open window and slips out.
4. He follows you out the door and you happen to shut it on him. Most budgies don’t survive those injuries.
5. Your cat, which you thought was in another location of the house, happened to be hiding in the room.
6. You forgot to turn off the ceiling fan.
7. The budgie ate something that’s not good for him such as leftovers or plants.
8. The budgie climbed in somewhere and can’t come back out, such as drawers or cupboards or the back of a piano.
9. A friend or family member coming in from outside not knowing the budgie is out of the cage, and the budgie slips out the door.
10. Cold weather is detrimental to a tropical bird.
11. NEVER “test” your budgie outdoors by making the assumption he will come back to you.

Unfortunately the list could go on.

There’s a certain excitement one might feel when a beloved budgie(s) flies through the house, follows you around or watches you and your activities throughout the day. After all, “he has wings and shouldn’t be confined to a cage”. You might feel sorry for him and want to give him the freedom all birds deserve.

Keep in mind:
Your budgie is a pet and raised to be a pet. He was not taught by his parents about outdoor dangers.

If, after reading this, you still feel that you want to give your budgie freedom, be a responsible owner and only allow your budgie what you feel is ok for him.

Always have a cage available as your budgies “main home”!
Provide him with a large flight cage with toys, ladders and possibly a second play cage he can use while free-flying under your supervision. Supply him with perches he can land on and always keep doors and windows shut. Don’t let your budgie have access to your entire home. Keep him safe in one room and make sure he always has access to his cage with food and water. Always bird-proof the room.

One last note:
Baby budgies are safest inside their cage because they are learning and memorizing their space and where everything is. Allowing them time outside their cage should only happen once the budgie understands his/her space and feels comfortable around a new environment. He will show confidence once he knows his surroundings. A fearful budgie should never be allowed to free-fly until he’s used to his environment.

Bonding with your budgie:

Raising budgies is for us a labour of Love! We enjoy the process and there’s nothing more beautiful in the world of birds than to have little feet sit on our finger cracking little seeds without a care in the world!

How our budgies bond with us:

It’s very simple! The budgies cry for food, we satisfy their cry by giving warm hand-feeding formula and the bonding process has begun. The voice, the food, our warm hands to hold the birds for a while and finally a return to their safe place, a warm box. We follow this routine several times a day.
We do not handle the babies between feedings. We cover the cages to darken to mimic some of the darkness of the nest boxes and play music in the background. Baby budgies mostly sleep and grow between feedings.

How one of our budgies will bond with you, his new owner:

The best time, provided the budgie is ready, is between 6-8 weeks of age. Once we see a budgie become confident to perch, take seeds from our hand and step up, he is ready. We also show him where he can find water.

Once you have your budgie, he will no longer hear our familiar voices, or see our faces. This will cause him to be shy for a few days as he learns to trust new people. Please be patient with your budgie and follow the suggestions on the information sheet we provide for you. Don’t let the budgie fly around in an unfamiliar room, which will only cause him fear. Let him settle down in a quiet spot in a room where you move around, inside his cage partially covered. This helps the budgie focus on his space to find food, water and perches. Use the sample food on your hand and offer some to the budgie (slowly) until he takes some. Talk softly so he gets to know your voice.

Following these easy steps with some patience will help a lot in the bonding process. 🦜
