When someone messaged us they were looking for a "spicy all around mare", we knew we had just the perfect little mare for them. Although Sadie was never posted on the market, she has sold and is now gone to her new home. She will be loved by her very own teenager (look at that smile 🥹). We wish them all the best and can't wait to see them have fun together. 🥰💕

We would like to welcome our latest boarder - this gentle giant named Cocoa and her owner Mary. Cocoa is a very quiet and gentle Percheron cross mare who came from Ontario last month. She's all done with her quarantine and now in the main barn. 🖤

What a weekend spent at the Colleen Loach Clinic organized by Horse Trials Nova Scotia. We are so lucky to be able to ride with an Olympian canada 🇨🇦 right here in NS. Incredible opportunity. Some tough courses, but all three horses improved during the weekend, and both riders were left with helpful tips on how to ride better.

Jenna & Loucy got pushed out of their comfort zone with some bigger jumps, but rode beautifully and Loucy did not hesitate to jump all the jumps and was super willing. Starting to be hard to believe this little mare used to be a reiner. 🤩

Poppy handled everything well, got challenged all around - first time jumping indoors, tighter turns, bigger jumps. She sometimes forgot to pick up her feet, but was trying to figure out all the horse jumps. What a perfect sweet young mare. 🥰💕

Sadie was added to the list last minute, and was very spicy 🌶️. She was happy to jump, and was great considering she had not jumped since May. Some very helpful tips on how to ride this little chestnut mare better. ✨

Always a great time at HTNS clinics.

What a wonderful time at Murphy’s Stable for the Jim Anderson clinic these past four days. ✨

‼️‼️

We’ve received word of a positive case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis in Nova Scotia. EEE is a viral disease of horses that causes inflammation of the brain. This disease has a high mortality rate (~90%) in horses.

This disease is transmitted from birds to horses via mosquitoes. Horses cannot transmit EEE to other horses. This means your horse is at risk even if he has no contact with other horses. This also means there is no need to cancel any shows or clinics, as they do not increase risk for transmission.

The clinical signs of EEE often come on abruptly. These can include depression, anorexia, fever, and lethargy. Neurological signs may include tremors, weakness, ataxia, paralysis, seizures, decreased awareness of surroundings, and recumbency.

There is no cure for EEE. Treatment consists of supportive care, but is often unsuccessful resulting in fatality rates around 90%.

Thankfully, there is a vaccine for EEE. The American Association of Equine Practitioners recommends horses be vaccinated at minimum yearly for EEE, more frequently in the face of an outbreak or heavy mosquito year.

You may recall, we posted about cases of EEE in NB last year. We are seeing more EEE in the Maritimes and this is an incredibly important disease to protect your horses from.

In light of this positive case in NS, we recommend boostering for EEE if it has been >6 months since your horse was last vaccinated.

We vaccinate regularly for EEE in our practice. If your horse has received an Equiloid or Fluvac-5 vaccine from us in the last 6 months, you are covered. Horses that have not been vaccinated previously will require a booster vaccination 3-4 weeks after the first dose.

This past Saturday we held our first on property show for our younger riders. We are so proud of all the riders and can’t thank enough all our wonderful volunteers and parents for helping out. We can’t wait to do it again next year! 🥰

Exactly a year ago, we went to see this gorgeous mare for sale as soon as I got back from Reno. What a great decision it was to buy her - Poppy is the sweetest. 🥰
