PARADE OF PETS!!
This year marks CAReS 10th Anniversary. We would like to invite everyone to come celebrate with us during the Claresholm Parade on August 11th.
If you have ever adopted a pet from us or any other animal rescue or just want to support our cause, bring your pet to walk in the parade with us. You don't even have to bring a pet, just show up and walk with us. Costumes are a bonus but not necessary. This years parade theme is Solute to Horses.
Let's see how many pets and people we can get rounded up to join us for a fun morning in Claresholm.
If you would like to walk with us, please send us a message!
MoMo is Home!!!
This is testimony as to how much a cat does not like shelter life! MoMo one day after adoption is a completely different girl and is thriving on attention!
Sadie was a adopted last week after a short time at the shelter. Her new home is in Missoula, Montana! We received the following today....
"So nice of you to check in on little Sadie and I can understand your missing her morning greetings, as we are loving every minute of her puppy energy. She is an absolute doll!
Our trip home was uneventful, other than one incident of her losing her cookies (literally) and incessant ear kisses, which were lovingly accepted. She learned on the third stop not to struggle to get back into the truck and now does so with one giant leap. She seems to looks forward to loading up now, even without cookie incentive. She had a couple of accidents in the house the first day, but none since.
She seems to have become a part of our family the minute she burst through the door. Even our 13 year old lab is tolerating her play, but mostly ignores her attempts. She went with us all for a long hike yesterday and did wonderfully, rarely getting out of our sight and coming when called. She wears a bell just in case and the cloth you see on her collar is her temporary ID, as her personalized collar is on order.
We will be going on longer and longer hikes in the next few weeks, as we have several backpacking trips planned before the end of this month. I will look forward to sending more pictures.
Thank you all again for your part in giving beautiful and loving animals such as this a loving and lifetime home.
I’ll send more pics and another update in the near future.
Thanks again!

A Video Postcard From Raven
Raven came to CAReS as a tiny kitten. She was found laying in the snow with a broken femur. She was nursed back to health and was soon adopted. Today we received a Video Postcard from Raven - additional pictures in comments-
Hi friends!
I am doing so well in my new home. My favourite time for snuggles with my owner is when she’s sitting on the toilet. I really love my cat tree by the window, and I really wanna play with the dog but he’s still not too sure about me. All my fur has grown in from my surgery - and my favourite toys are: pens, pipe cleaners and toilet paper rolls. I love drinking all my water out of the toilet!
Thanks for adopting me out - my new family loves me!
Love,
Raven
Sundown's Story :(
Sundown came to CAReS a few months ago from a not so good home situation. She was badly burned on parts of her body, particularly her front left leg. The healing process has been long and time consuming. But through it all Sundown is a very lovable and sometimes very funny with her antics. When she is well enough to be adopted she will make an extraordinary pet. For now, to keep her from irritating her leg she can be found in her pajama's, and she really does not seem to mind them. She looks like a little feline Fat Albert where her little love rolls come out between the buttons. She is a real trooper!
Kittens Having Kittens
See comments for additional pictures.
Last week, “Honey” arrived at the shelter, very young herself and very pregnant. Young cats have been having kittens since time began...yes, there can be a higher rate of issues. CAReS strives to make sure all our pregnant girls are well looked after and in the best place possible to birth and nurture their babies. Honey was taken to Foster Care right away.
Kittens having kittens, does not seem right, but it was happening. Yesterday afternoon Honey started going into labor. Under the watchful eye of our Doula Foster Mom,Vicky Lockhart the first kitten arrived with little to no problem. Awhile later the second was born. Honey was quite tired and showed very little interest in her babies so Vicky took over and cleaned up the kittens and cut the cords.
There was still another kitten or two to come, however Honey’s contractions were not strong enough. Later in the evening a decision was made to take Honey to the vet for a possible c section. Thankfully a cesarean was not required. The vet was able to massage the kitten out. An ultrasound determined there were no other kittens.
Sadly the final kitten to be born never made it through the night. Mother Nature’s way of saying that Honey is just to young and fragile herself to be nursing 3 babies. Honey is still not showing signs of Maternal Instinct and we are praying for the best and hope that after some rest, Honey will come around.
Thank you Vicky for your determination to see Honey through this difficult birth. Thank you Dr Krista at Willow Creek Vet for your advice last night and Thank you Eileen at SAVE 24 Emergency Clinic in Okotoks for seeing Sugar through this difficult labor and birth!
AMY - Pitbull/Rotti/Lab Mix - 4 years - ADOPTED
You. It's just all about you. Where ever you go, I want to be there. Right there, with you. Because you're amazing and no one will ever appreciate your amazing-ness like I will.
Car rides? I love them. Let's go. Walks? We'll work out together just you and me. It will be wonderful.
You have little humans around? I've lived with them before. If you love them, I love them. But I would prefer not to have other pets around - I want you all to myself.
If you're bored, I'll bring you my squeaky toy or ball. I love to fetch. If you're lonely, I'll sit curled in a ball right next to you. I'm going to make you so happy.
In observance of the mother of all holidays, here’s to all the moms of fuzzy kids with four legs and tails!
Boone was adopted from CAReS a few months ago and here is an update just in time for Mother's Day. A testament of how rewarding adopting from a shelter can be!
"Hey!! Just thought I’d give you another update on my Boone 💕
Oh man. The more time passes the more I love him. He is absolutely one of the most needy cats I’ve ever owned and I wouldn’t have it any other way, he cries when I’m in the shower because he can’t see me, so he crawls between the curtains and sits on the ledge, he cuddles with me so so sweet, letting me cuddle him like I would a teddy bear, he always has to be near me, and if I lock him out because I’m having a bath with candles, or he’s keeping me up at night I eventually have to let him back in because he’s so upset he’s not with me.
He has such a big personality and has so many quirks, and I am so lonely without him! (He talks all the time and is always interested in what I’m doing!) He’s such a spoiled kitty (he has a little kitty box filled with toys!) and in return he gives so so much love!
He’s also the clutziest cat!!! He’s always off balance, slipping and falling, and once he fell and used my ear to claw onto, it bled pretty good! Haha I’m covered in little kitty claw scars from all his falling! 😂
Here’s some pictures from the last few months ☺️ getting Boone was the best decision I’ve ever made!"
*ADOPTED*
Helloooooo nice person! I'm SADIE; who are you? You say you're looking for a dog??? That's amazing! Because I am a dog! You say you knew that? That you came here to our page looking for ME? Truly? You saw me on Faceook when your friend shared my link on their page, and said I was a beautiful girl who needed someone, JUST LIKE THEM to be totally happy for the rest of her life? Well, isn't that amazing! I guess that means we're going to be best friends FOREVER! And to think it all started when someone clicked that "share" button.
SADIE: 10 month old Golden Lab/Retriver cross
Gentle and quiet
Would do well on an acreage.
Gets along with other pets.
♫The spring is in the air
I'll see lovers everywhere
I'm singing a song
I won't do anything wrong♫
Hey there! I love that song because it is all about ME! My name is SPRING! Sometimes spring brings cloud and rain and I promise you, with a bit of polishing (ie, petting), I'll shine so brightly my new family might need to cover their eyes!
Spring is not only a season, it also means To dart, shoot; to be resilient or elastic; and to move by elastic force; to become warped. I can do all of that! And I'm crazy for head scratches, purr like crazy when I'm petted, and when I'm not dazzling you like the breath of fresh air that I am, am doing my best impersonation of a love bug.
So how about a share for a hard-luck kitty determined to become FULLY, not just semi, precious to someone before the summer?
A small peak inside of CAReS.
Presently we have 20 Cats living in the shelter. A relatively low number compared to the usual. Each of our cats have their own kennel. Bonded cats who arrived at the shelter together generally share a kennel. All of our cats are given freedom outside their kennels to exercise and play together during the day. During the night they are all confined their kennels so we can monitor their bathroom and eating habits, which gives us insight into health concerns.
We have 5 rooms in which the cats are living. All cats when they first arrive at the shelter are put in the quarentine room for 10 days. This is to prevent the spread of illness to other cats, should a new intake have any infectious disease. Our cuddle room is for new born kittens and mothers. The final 3 rooms we strategicaly place cats according to sex, temperment, how well they get along with each other etc.
All cats are vaccinated and spayed/neutered as soon as possible. Sometimes it take longer then we would like, depending on health concerns and vet availability. We strive to adopt out our pets in a timely manner. Cats who have been with us long term and considered unadoptable become our mascots and are given special treatment to wander the entire shelter and are our door greeters.
Our operations are 2 shifts, 7 days a week. Shift duties include cleaning each kennel, food and water, medications, observing our cats and our hard working staff and volunteers spend time each day to socialize with the cats. Laundry and dishes, washing floors are also done daily.
As you can see, a lot goes into the care of our cats. Volunteers are so important to help keep the shelter operations run efficiently. Sometime the work is tedious, but ever so worth it when we see a cat leave the confines of a kennel and go out the door with their new forever family.
No cat should be confined to a kennel for any reason. ADOPT, don't shop!
Our public hours are 11 am - 2 pm, Mon-Sat.
Amy - Pitbull/Rotti Mix
A couple months ago Amy arrived at CAReS with her lifelong companion Amur. When the duo were brought in, their people requested we adopt them out together. However sometimes things do not work out the way we wanted. Amur has now left the shelter, leaving us with a very sad Amy.
Amy is now up for Adoption as a single girl.
AMY - Pitbull/Rotti Mix
Amy is a beautiful 4 year old. She was raised around young children and is a very loving dog. Amy is a little protective our her territory when it comes to other dogs. She would do well single pet household.
Foster - 7 Month Old Shepard X
Foster came to us needing a lot of training. He was very unapproachable due to his lack of obedience. One of the first things people ask is if a dog is good around kids. 2 weeks ago, we would have said no. He has now had several training sessions. Very smart and fast learner! Yesterday Foster spent a good amount of playtime with our Junior volunteer! In a short time he has come a long way. When adopted our trainer is available to work with Fosters new family so Foster can continue to learn and become the best dog possible.
