Scottie at his first Légèreté clinic with Veronika Bühn in Abbotsford
Part 3
Our ride, unfortunately the pivo camera cut out the walk exercises.
Relaxation and understanding are very important to me.
Part 2
In hand work to prepare for what we want to do under saddle. Those are the first attempts at shoulder in and he still needs a lot more body awareness and coordination before riding is an option. In hand exercises need to feel easy to translate them easily into riding.
Benito around his 30th ride.
Trust was our first goal as he was so tense being handled and very reactive to flags which he still has but is able to relax now quickly without panic escalating. Teaching him to stop and think, you do need trust for that, instead of panicking and ramping up the energy. I want to shape the horse on the ground I want to ride and be safe on later.
Participation and obedience (it is a harsh sounding word but the horse has to be ok to be directed willingly and softly or you will never be safe and in control riding). He has a very busy and distractable mind and is quick to figure where he would rather go, focus and patience are not his strong traits yet but he is young and that is understandable.
Then under saddle once he was okish with me being up there it was directional control, bending pointing his nose where I wanted to go wasn't enough in his case as he is so athletic so I needed shoulder control early on too.
Now it is often about speed control, he is a bit of an anxious type and figures knows whats next so he wants to rush. Thats part mental anxiety, wanting to take over and also balance which he looses easily in the corners and turns. Loss of balance can be quite stressful for horses and a big factor in bucking and bolting if one was to push them on.
So for us was making sure he responds to a demi arret to slow or stop at the walk which also rebalances. For the mental aspect its circles and changes of direction until he settles into a relaxed and steady trot and then going large.
For any bolting attempts its a clear one rein stop emergency break.
This horse certainly tests every aspect of training.
