‼️Pet Obesity Awareness Day may have passed but feline obesity is an ongoing health issue. To help more clients protect their cats from obesity-related health risks during National Cat Health Month (and every month), here are five tips to share with clients to help keep their cats at a normal healthy weight.

🐾Know Your Cat’s Ideal Weight
Though some online sources say that a cat should ideally weigh 8-10 pounds, a cat’s ideal weight depends on its body frame size. If you’re uncertain whether your cat is at its ideal weight, your veterinarian will be pleased to provide an assessment.

🐾Play With Your Cat
Cats become bored, just like people. In response, they often eat to fill their boredom (also like people). If their dish is empty, they often think, “I’ll go meow until Mom/Dad gives me some food.” And many pet parents cave. Instead, spent time playing with your cat. Break out those fishing-rod toys, laser pointers, or crinkle balls. You cat will simply be stoked that it’s playtime with you and burn off a few extra calories in the process.

🐾Use a Food Dispensing Toy
Place some of your cat’s daily dry food into a treat ball or other dispensing toy. Batting around a treat ball provides fun and exercise for a food-motivated cat. Such toys also act as puzzles for cats, both keeping their brains sharp and warding against boredom. Or try hiding pieces of dry cat food around the house to satisfy the hunter in your feline friend.

🐾Weigh Your Cat Regularly
Weigh your cat every 2-3 weeks (or once per month, minimum). Regular weigh-ins are an important part of successful weight-loss programs and keep everyone accountable. To ensure that your cat’s weight loss is neither too rapid nor excessive and to determine when your cat has lost enough weight, it’s important to have your cat’s weight loss assessed by your veterinarian.

🐾Maintain Your Cat’s Weight
Once your cat has achieved ideal body weight and condition, it’s important to maintain it. Your veterinarian can help you choose appropriate food and provide portion size for weight maintenance. Portion control is critical at this stage to prevent your cat from regaining weight.

💡 Welcome to CPC's Learning Lounge! 💡
Today we will talk about a very common issue, "Ringworm in pets".
As scary as it may sound, this is not a worm infestation, but a fungal infection affecting the hair, skin and nails of our pets. It is however, very contagious, hence the need to diagnose and treat it as quickly as possible. It spreads and contaminates our pets' environment and affects people around them as well.

🔎Symptoms - Watch out for these symptoms (shown in the picture below) in your pets:
- Scaling, Crusting, Redness of skin
- Bald spots
- Dandruff
- Itchiness (although may not be always present)

❓Some FAQs are:
1. Do Lysol and bleach kill ringworm?
A: Yes they can kill ringworm on non-living surfaces. However, don’t spray them on your pets.
2. Does hand sanitizer kill ringworm? ‍
A. Since Ringworm thrives underneath the surface of the skin, hand sanitizers may not protect you. Never apply hand sanitizers or alcohol (of any kind) to your pet.
3. How contagious is ringworm from a dog to a human?
Ringworm is very contagious between dogs and people. It can be transferred by touching your pet’s skin, especially if you have a cut or open wound. If you’ve contracted ringworm from your pet, it may appear as a small, itchy circular rash with a clear center.

🚧Precautionary measures to stop spread:
If you think you have ringworm, quarantine your dog to a specific area of your home and contact your vet for next steps. Some other tips to stop the spread are:
- Wash your pup’s bedding daily
- Disinfect sofas, furnishings, food bowls, toys (anything your pet interacts with)
- Keep giving your dog treatments, even if the skin lesions disappear and fur begins to regrow (as long as your vet approves)
- Wash your hands after interacting with your pet

📝We've always heard the two terms; Symptoms and Signs while visiting our healthcare providers. A symptom is a manifestation of disease apparent to the patient himself, while a sign is a manifestation of disease that the physician perceives. In veterinary medicine, the term 'symptom' is never used.

⁉️The logical answer to this is that while humans can verbally communicate their feelings, where it hurts and how long it has been hurting; our pets can't relay this information to us or our veterinary teams. Based on this fact, and the definition provided above, it will be incorrect to term our observations as symptoms. Hence, in veterinary practice we always use the term 'sign' as our pets are giving us signs of potential problems.

📅February is Pet Dental Health Month
Studies indicate 85% of adult pets have some degree of periodontal disease. Here's how dental disease affects vital organs:

💦Kidneys: pets with dental disease may have difficulty eating and drinking, which can lead to dehydration and put extra stress on the kidneys. Dental disease cause toxin build up which is difficult for kidneys to filter out leading to kidney infection and damage.

❤️‍🩹Heart: Periodontal disease is linked to heart diseases like endocarditis (a potentially fatal infection of the heart's inner lining). A key point to remember is that dogs and cats with both heart disease and periodontal disease can still have their dental disease treated safely under anaesthesia.

🌬Lungs: A healthy dog with proper oral hygiene has a robust immune system that fights infections. Without this, they are vulnerable to respiratory diseases like canine bronchitis.

☎️Got questions about how to best care for your pet’s oral health? We’re here with answers. Schedule your pet’s dental checkup today. Call us today at 403-345-5200.

Clinic Cuteness Alert: Bowtie Royalty Spotted! 👑🐶

✨Move over, canine runway models - we recently had the most dapper Newfoundland pup into our clinic, meet Wilson! 😍 The cutie rocked a bow-tie that could make James Bond look under dressed. 🕴️

With pure cuddle power, our Newfie proved why they're nicknamed the "nanny dog" - charming everyone in sight with those soulful dark brown eyes and that irresistible gentle and playful temperament.

📚Welcome to CPC's Learning Lounge 💡
Recently there has been a lot of talk around Xylitol and how lethal it can be for our pets.

❓What is Xylitol?
🔎Xylitol is a sugar alcohol produced from hardwoods such as birch and from corncob remnants. It is also naturally present in low amounts in some fruits and vegetables, including strawberries, lettuces, and pumpkin. It is essential to recognize the new market name of this product which is labelled as Birch Sugar.

🍭Xylitol is commonly used as a sweetener for tea or coffee. It can also be used in granulated form for baking. Due to the many different properties and uses of xylitol, it can also be found in a variety of other products, including:
➡️Dental products: Toothpaste, Mouthwash, Dental floss
➡️Dry-mouth lozenges
➡️Nasal sprays
➡️Low- or no-sugar candy, gum, and other foods
➡️Chewable, liquid, quick-dissolve, and gummy medications and supplements
➡️Various skin care products

⚠️Xylitol often lauded for its low-calorie sweetness in human diets, poses a severe threat to dogs, cats and ferrets. It induces a rapid insulin release, leading to dangerous drop in blood sugar levels. Even in small amounts, the results can be devastating leading to vomiting, tremors, seizures, lethargy, in-coordination, liver failure in severe cases and even fatality. Time is of essence here, and effects may begin as early as 10-60 min post ingestion of Xylitol. In case of accidental ingestion, please contact the Pet Poison Helpline® at 1-855-764-7661 or your veterinarian to determine next steps.

✅Prevention: Keep note of any products in your home that contain xylitol. Check the ingredient list for any sugar-free products, dental products, flavored medications, and supplements, and be sure to keep any products containing xylitol in an area well out of reach.

📣Veterinary Drama Alert:
When Leashes Become Lunch! 🚑

We had a wild adventure at CPC that proves our vets are basically superhero first responders for furry friends! 🦸‍♀️

Meet our brave patient - this adventurous dog (pictured below) who decided a nylon leash would make an excellent snack. Spoiler alert: It does NOT. 😂
Our incredible veterinarian Dr. Stephanie took a chance and tried to get him to vomit the leash up - despite it having been missing for a week! A little help was needed to get the leash out - in one piece no less! Talk about steady hands and nerves of steel! 💪👩‍⚕️
PSA to all pet parents: Dogs are curious creatures, but leashes are for walking, NOT eating! 🐶

Pro tip: Keep those tempting chewables out of reach, and always supervise your four-legged friends. One moment of distraction can lead to an unexpected vet visit!

A reminder that our furry friends sometimes need us to be their guardians - even from their own appetites! 💕🐾

🍼👶 Celebrating Our Amazing Colleague's New Chapter! 🎉

We're sending off our incredible VTA Shyan, as she begins her maternity leave, and wow, did we make sure she felt loved!

Last week, we threw her the most heartwarming baby shower. Thanks to our amazing host Charlie, whose home was transformed into a pastel paradise, complete with adorable decorations and a spread that would make any mom-to-be smile. Our team came together to shower Shyan with thoughtful gifts 💙.

Shyan has been such an integral part of our team - her creativity, work ethic, and infectious laugh will be deeply missed during her time away. But we couldn't be more excited for her as she embarks on her most important role yet - becoming a mom!
We've already planned some special video check-ins and can't wait to meet the newest member of our work family when she returns.

Wishing you all the joy, love, and sleepless nights, Shyan! We'll be here cheering you on every step of the way. 👶❤️

✨Ameowsing Monday!✨

🐱These last couple of weeks have all been purrs and playtime at the clinic! Meet our newest (and fluffiest) team members. This adorable duo was found by Dr. Mel and is being fostered by Dr. Steph, soon they will be heading to their new furever homes. But till then they're all ours to cuddle and play with and have brought so much joy to our routine. From running around in the vet's office, to sneaking into laps during meetings, they've truly become the heart of our team! They're proof that the best medicine might just be a purring ball of fluff. 🐾
