Helping Bo Duke 🐾❤️

The story of Bo Duke and Kelly Richardson hit my heart so I've offered my training services from K9 Mechanix Dog Training to try to help secure this dog.

Backstory:
This beautiful Cane Corso showed up at Kelly and her family's property over 45 days ago. And in my opinion he could not have chosen a better place or better family to help him! To say Kelly's dedication to do what's best for this dog is admirable is an understatement. The time and commitment she's putting forth is truly outstanding!

Bo Duke is a very unusual case. I was introduced to Bo Duke and Kelly through a previous client who is well versed with the Corso breed. Bo Duke is a sweet boy who unfortunately is locked in fear. He assembled with Kelly's other dogs and follows her and her family around however he keeps a weary distance from humans. In the over 45 days that Bo Duke has been there they have not been able to secure him and not even be able to pet him until our session on Saturday. Bo Duke is afraid of inclosed spaces and has chosen to sleep out under a tree. Kelly has gone above and beyond to give this dog a warm shelter, food and love. We are working on getting him into her home ASAP.

That said in just two sessions with K9 Mechanix Dog Training Kelly has managed to earn Bo Dukes trust enough to be able to pet him, finally follow her into the barn and is close to coming into the house. Kelly is a quick study with her dog handling skills and has learnt to mark the wanted behaviours while building confidence in Bo Duke. I'm elated with their progress.

Our Goal with Bo Duke:
1. Getting him inside
2. Being able to handle him without him bolting off the property
3. Trusting humans
4. Getting him seen by a vet

Please note we are working with a rescue and all other measures to ensure this boys safety.

A really good explanation of how dogs communicate as opposed to how we as humans communicate with them. Negative pressure is so misunderstood!

Dogs communicate with each other through a unique concept called negative pressure, which stands in contrast to human communication methods. In human interactions, we often use positive reinforcement—verbal praise, physical affection, or treats—to indicate that someone has done something ‘right.’ However, dogs don’t communicate this way with one another. Instead, dogs know they’ve acted correctly when there’s an absence of negative pressure or correction from the other dog.

Negative pressure in dog communication takes several forms, including physical posturing, vocal signals, and eye contact. For instance, a slight growl, a fixed stare, or a tense posture can communicate to another dog that their behaviour is not welcome. On the other hand, if a dog’s actions are appropriate, they’re met with calm neutrality—no correction or pressure, just a relaxed stance and silence. This subtle system allows dogs to learn boundaries quickly without the need for overt praise.

The benefit of this communication method is clarity; it reduces misunderstandings by creating clear behavioural boundaries. A dog knows instantly if they’ve overstepped because the feedback is immediate and intuitive. This approach can be particularly effective in multi-dog households, where reinforcing boundaries with negative pressure promotes neutrality without the need for constant human intervention. For humans, understanding this concept can improve training and socialisation by creating respect for a dog’s natural communication style, ultimately creating a more balanced and peaceful environment.

It's an art form in my opinion. A beautiful waltz between dog and handler.

Heeling or “fusslaufen” is really an artform. Nothing is as simple and beautiful as a perfect heel. I have studied some of the best in the world and am in awe, still trying to do it better.

Tammy & Milo had such a transformation after their first lesson last week. I see a vast difference in Milo in out second session tonight.

Milo is a dog reactive male but after our initial session Tammy has learnt how to manage Milo's reactivity through clear communication and better handling techniques. Tammy did her homework and it shows! Great work Team Milo. 👏👏👏
