In the year 2000, a dream took flight,
A sanctuary born to make wrongs right.
Sheila Burns, with a heart so grand,
Built a haven of hope on this blessed land.
From twelve sweet donkeys, scared and alone,
To seventy-five, each with a home.
PrimRose stands, a beacon of care,
A place of love beyond compare.

Celebrate the 25th Year!
Oh, what a journey, what a delight!
Join us in cheer, in 2025’s light.
On the 25th of each month, give $25—
Help keep this sanctuary alive!
With hay to buy and hugs to share,
Every dollar shows you care.
Mark your calendar for June twenty-two,
A grand celebration awaits for you!

Join the Fun, Join the Cause!
Volunteer a day or donate a dime,
Spread the word—it’s worth your time.
For every donkey, mule, or hinny,
Your love makes their world more sunny.
So here’s to Sheila, the heart of this place,
Her kindness and courage a lasting embrace.
And here’s to the animals, each tale they bring,
At PrimRose Sanctuary, let joy take wing!

Meet the Cast of Hooves and Hearts
Ote, the elder, wise and spry,

He was a first in days gone by.
With thirty years, his gentle grace
Shines as a symbol of this special place.

Poppy, sweet and calm as can be,
A soothing friend for the elderly.
But when feeding time nears, she brays aloud,
Her voice a charm that gathers the crowd.

Nicky was a shy one, unsure of where to be,
But now this funny donkey’s full of love and energy.

Jack's our daily "dinner bell," his bray rings loud and clear,
At 8:30 and 2:00, he reminds us, "Feed us here!"

Maisie, our ambassador, with charm and golden heart,
She sings to all the visitors, a true outreach work of art.

Lily and Amelia are bonded, side by side,
Through every step and moment, their love is magnified.

Rosie and Tiana, a sweet and bonded pair,
With Rosie’s foal, young Amelia, they share a love so rare.

Clara and Little Dove are social, bright, and sweet,
They greet each guest with nuzzles and make your day complete.

Sally came here weary, but with Oliver, her son,
She’s shown the world that love and care can heal what’s come undone.

Lucy’s shy at first, but patience wins her trust,
Her gentle nuzzles show that love is always just.

Gina, our thoughtful giant, stands tall and proud and true,
She proves that mules aren’t stubborn—they just think more than you!

Wilson’s still a learner, but he’s showing that he’s brave,
This tiny mule is finding joy in all the love we gave.

Kevin and Soxx, the best of friends, so playful, bright, and wild,
With endless fun and laughter, they bring joy to every child.

And Carl, the gentle watcher, still healing from his past,

Each donkey, mule, and hinny here,
Tells a story of love that draws us near.

Got to share the Van Donk Starry Night again 😍
I think Van Gogh would have approved 😉
One of our followers Nikos Markopoulos brilliantly coined the term Van Donk 😍

PS: For those interested in a print, if you google you might find some links, I didn't include any as a) I didn't know if any of the links were legit, b) they were over priced and c) none of them were from a rescue. Alternatively, you can download it and there are many places that can from a digital photo make mugs, T-shirt, etc. ~ Ariane

⭐WE HAVE A BIG ANNOUNCEMENT ⭐

2025 is the 25th Anniversary of PrimRose Donkey Sanctuary and we are celebrating all year long!

In the celebration of our 25th Anniversary celebration, we have launched our new website www.primrosedonkeysanctuary.com! Check out our new gallery to see pictures of some of the amazing animals we care for, as well as our donation section for more ways you can help support our sanctuary.

Sheila Burns started the Sanctuary in 2000, with twelve donkeys and a calling to provide a safe haven for donkeys who need a home. Over the past 25 years the Sanctuary has rescued countless animals and is currently home to 75.

Please join us in celebrating the 25th Anniversary in 2025. We can't do what we do without your support and this year is no different.

We'll have our regular visiting days, events and tea parties, as well as a dedicated 25th Anniversary celebration day later in the year.

Here's how you can be a big part of this special year.

$25 ON THE 25th

As a tribute to the Sanctuary and to raise the money we need for this year's hay allotment, we are asking our wonderful and generous supporters to unite and sign up to donate $25 on the 25th each month in 2025. With a commitment from just 50 donors, we can secure the hay needed for the donkeys in 2025.
To sign up, please visit the website https://www.primrosedonkeysanctuary.com/ or email [email protected]

Did you know that a donkey's sense of hearing is so well developed they can hear the call of another donkey in the desert up to 60 miles away! Those glorious ears also keep them cool, as heat is released through blood vessels in the skin of their ears!🐴💛

Our Story

We are dedicated to the rescue, protection, and rehabilitation of abused, neglected, and unwanted donkeys. We serve as an information 'hoofway' to educate the public; the donkey is not stubborn, dumb or vicious; but a stoic, loyal and very intelligent animal, who will risk its life to protect its charges, including humans.

On a day to day basis we are always educating the public on the care and feeding of donkeys and mules. Either by email, telephone or when visitor come to the farm. During our open house days, Thursdays and Sundays, visitors can have personal, hands-on interaction with the donkeys and mules, learn about their history and rehabilitation progress.

We are a registered Canadian charity and rely entirely on donations to support our Sanctuary. The Sanctuary is managed by its founder, Sheila Burns and supported by approximately 25 volunteers. There are no paid staff. We provide life saving care and make every effort to help animals recover from physical and mental abuse where needed, or provide a home in cases where owners are unable or unwilling to provide care.
