Update on Holly Cow… she arrived at our ranch exhausted and depressed after a tough birth and loss of her calf. We got the vet out and had to use our tractor several times to help her stand. We quickly learned to milk her. Yesterday we got a call from a rancher who had twin heifers who lost their mama. We made the 6 hour round trip drive and got home after 9 last night.

Everybody struggled with the process of introducing the new calves to Holly. Holly wasn’t impressed with the way that they were frantically trying to nurse, with no idea where to go and massive head butts, which is instinctual for the calves. We held Holly, we guided the calves we would stand back, watch move away over and over. Finally, when the calves had nursed well, we put them in the barn for the night.

We still didn’t trust Holly’s mamas instincts had kicked in fully. This morning went a lot smoother. When she tolerated their head budding and they finally figured out which end was going to give them what they wanted, we knew it was time to stand back.

Thankfully, the calves were drawn to Holly and started following her around. When she started cleaning them, we celebrated! The last thing we wanted was to have to keep milking Holly three times a day plus bottle feed twin calves.

Welcome Holly Cow to the ranch! She is the most gentle soul and already important of our family - eager to meet the kids and start working for her hay.

And… she gives us thick, rich milk by the bucket!

Pretty and incredibly gentle Jersey cow arrived today… she lost her calf and we want to keep her in milk. Anyone out there who wants some fresh cream/butfer/milk and knows how to milk her - we’re happy to share the work and the bounty.
