We recently took advantage of some beautiful weather 🌞 (before summer went on vacation 🌧️) to enjoy a fantastic team hike on Mount Washington 🏔️. It was an amazing afternoon filled with camaraderie 🤝 and team-building in the stunning backyard we call the Comox Valley 🌲.

Yesterday was an interesting day with Animal Planet on site filming for their upcoming series 'My Pet Ate What?'. They are following our endoscopist, Dr. Eugene, as he travels around BC performing endoscopic procedures.

Endoscopy uses a minimally invasive instrument with a camera, light, and grasping tools to retrieve dangerous items animals have ingested, often preventing the need for higher-risk surgeries.

Our patient, Theo, a 13-month-old male C**n Hound, had been experiencing gulping, abdominal pain, and vomiting. X-rays and bloodwork were normal, so Dr. Eugene was called to determine if Theo had esophagitis, stomach ulcers, or a blockage. After finding no signs of these conditions, Dr. Eugene performed biopsies to check for cell changes in Theo's stomach and intestines to help determine how to make him feel better.

The show will air on Animal Planet or Discovery Channel towards the end of 2024 or early 2025. Keep your eyes peeled!!

Happy Easter from everyone at Raintree!
Here are some tips for a happy and safe Easter with your pets.🐰🌼

Ensure all chocolates and sweet treats are out of snout reach. Chocolate (especially dark) can be toxic to both cats and dogs when ingested. Sugar free candies, gum and some baked good may contain Xylitol a sugar free sweetener that is highly toxic to your pets and can cause liver failure. Use caution when offering human food and table scraps to your pet. High fat foods can cause gastrointestinal upset and/or pancreatitis.

Be aware of what spring plants are safe for your home. Did you know cats develop acute kidney failure signs 12-96 hours after eating lilies. If cats are seen eating lilies and brought in for treatment within 6 hours of ingestion they do well, but their prognosis is very poor if more than 12-18 hours has passed. Lily ingestion does not cause acute kidney failure in dogs, but it can cause gastrointestinal upset.

Make sure you remember where you hide your eggs to ensure there are no stray eggs for your curious canine friend to find. Spoiled eggs can cause GI upset and fake ones can cause intestinal blockages. Be aware of decorations that your pets may be keen to play with or ingest. Fake grass in Easter baskets are very cute but your pet may see it as a shiny treat or fun toy. Shredded colored paper can be a great alternative.
