We're back from holidays! Ember was the best little travel buddy we could have asked for. It was WAY too hot to go on any real adventures, but we got a bit of exploring done.

We visited city parks, provincial campsites, rec sites, and the ferries, and Ember rocked all of it!!

We're excited to be back at the markets, though!

Be sure to take enough fresh water with you on outings. Be aware that ingesting too much salt water can be life-threatening. If they have taken in a lot of salt water (either for thirst or accidentally during play, you should contact your veterinarian)

As we are coming into a heat wave in many parts of the country - know what to watch for in your dog and how to manage heat stroke. Best practice, however, is to keep your dog in the shade and well hydrated at all times. Walk early in the morning or in the evening when the temperature is cooler and avoid hot pavement as well.

With the nicer weather we want to be outside more and of course we want our dogs to come along and enjoy the adventures!

Ground temperatures can cause some major issues for your dogs paws though, and different surfaces heat up & hold heat differently. If you place your hand on the ground and cannot hold it there for 7 seconds without issues then it is too hot for your dog to be walking on without protection❗

Did you know that dogs sweat through the pads of their paws? If their paws are too hot it effects their bodies ability to properly sweat which can lead to increased body temperature, as sweating helps to cool down the body.

❤WELLNESS WEDNESDAY❤

Fireworks can be absolutely terrifying for dogs. Unless your dog is new to you, you probably already have a pretty good idea about how your dog feels about fireworks.
In our K9 First Aid Courses we talk about "training for treatment" so why not "train for fireworks?"

Here are a couple tips to get your started:
🐾 Take your dog out for some physical and mental exercise so they are nice and tired.
🐾 While your dog is resting put on a sound and/or video clip of fireworks. Start with a low volume and let it play.
🐾 Each time you do this increase the volume slightly. This allows them to gradually get familiar with the sounds.
🐾 If the volume you have it at startles them do not get worked up yourself. You can turn it down slightly and reward them only when they are calm.

For additional training ideas reach out to a trainer! If you dog requires medication, reach out to your veterinarian well before you know fireworks are going to be set off in your area.
