Milo and Kona want to wish everyone a ! πŸŽƒ
Β
Halloween night, with all the noise, strangers in costumes and activity at the door can be overwhelming for even the most confident and well-adjusted dogs but is especially challenging for dogs who are fearful of strangers and loud noises. Many dogs will become overly stressed out and anxious by the constant knocking and doorbell ringing. It is important that we set our dogs up for success and aim to keep them feeling safe and comfortable.

Tips to make Halloween less scary for your dog:

πŸ‘» The first step in preparing your dog for a relaxed Halloween evening is to exercise him earlier in the day. Be sure your pup gets plenty of healthy movement in any dog-friendly activity, such as walking, running, hiking, or playing.

πŸŽƒ Before the trick-or-treating starts, set your dog up in a quiet room far away from the front door to help them stay calm and comfortable.

πŸ§›πŸ»β€β™€οΈ Close blinds and turn on a white noise machine, fan, or background music in the room with your dog and turn the volume up to a level that will help drown out outside noise.

πŸ¦‡ Provide your dog with interactive activities to keep them occupied and entertained such as a stuffed and frozen Kong, a bully stick, snuffle mat or dog puzzles with treats or kibble.

πŸ‘» Minimize noise and activity at the door by sitting outside or at the end of your driveway and handing out candy from there to keep trick-or-treaters from approaching your house, knocking on the door, or ringing the bell.

πŸŽƒ Even if you are just having friends over for a Halloween party, keep your dogs away from the festivities in their safe room. Masks and costumes change how people look and smell to a dog, so even familiar people may become frightening. Put a sign on the door to the safe room so your guests know it’s off-limits.

πŸ§›πŸ»β€β™€οΈ Remember it's okay to comfort your dog if they're upset. You can't reinforce fear (it's an emotion, not a behaviour) so please comfort them if that reassures them.

πŸ¦‡ Ensure your dog is wearing a collar with a legible I.D dog.

Our dogs have layered needs, ranging from food, water, and other necessities needed by any living creature to more complex requirements, such as physical exercise, mental stimulation, and the ability to engage in natural, instinctual behaviour.

The practice of satisfying these complex needs β€” especially the ones involving your dog’s mental and emotional well-being β€” is termed canine enrichment. Essentially, means providing dogs with regular opportunities to engage in a full range of natural species-specific behaviors in safe, appropriate, and fun ways. Enrichment provides dogs with the mental, social, and sensory stimulation they need for optimal well-being.

Think of all the things your dog likes to do – sniffing, scavenging, chasing, digging, ripping, shredding, chewing, licking, just to name a few. All these behaviors are so fun and satisfying for dogs because they are natural to their species. Engaging in these behaviors on a regular basis is not only normal, but essential to their physical and emotional wellbeing.

Enrichment is not defined solely by what we do, but more significantly by the outcomes of what we do. It can only be enrichment if the result is a physically and behaviorally healthy animal.

Dogs suffering from separation anxiety have a phobia of being alone. They display signs of fear and panic when left for longer than they can handle.

What are the common signs of separation anxiety❓

The signs that we look for when deciding if a dog has separation anxiety include:

πŸ”Έ Excessive barking, whining, crying and howling.
πŸ”Έ Chewing or destroying floors, walls, and doors, particularly around entrances.
πŸ”Έ Frantic attempts to escape, sometimes to the point of self harm.
πŸ”Έ Soiling (especially when the dog is otherwise house-trained).
πŸ”Έ Getting anxious well before you leave.
πŸ”Έ Disinterest in food (i.e will not eat the stuffed Kong you left for them).

Dogs do not need to display all of these behaviours to be diagnosed with separation anxiety, in fact they may only display one or two.

Some anxious dogs don’t display any of the more common separation-related behaviours but instead show some of the other signs of fear such as:

πŸ”Έ Licking
πŸ”Έ Panting
πŸ”Έ Whining, low-level crying
πŸ”Έ Pacing
πŸ”Έ Trembling
πŸ”Έ Tail tucked
πŸ”Έ Drooling
πŸ”Έ Freezing
πŸ”Έ Cowering
πŸ”Έ Ears pinned back
