Mom brushes and grooms them both at home so he’s learned from his big brother and from mom that grooming is a normal part of life and no big deal! Such a great first appointment! Hey Everyone, I just want to let you know I’ll be on vacation from May 30th, returning to work on June 12th. I’m heading out to Victoria again to spend some time with my daughter. Going to be camping and hiking and enjoying the beauty of the island! I usually get pretty booked up after vacation so make sure to book ahead if you need a spot right around June 12th on.

Here is a bonus picture of Milo who visited today! He is a cutey patootie and such a sweet boy!

Oh my goodness! This adorable girl is Winifred or Winnie for short and she is a 15 week old toy poodle. She came for her first groom and it couldn’t have gone better! First groom is less about the groom and more about a gentle introduction to dryers, clippers, nails and bath. She was relaxed and was even falling asleep while I was trimming her face at the end! She was cuddly, giving kissing and she melted my heart!

Hi Everyone! I’m back from Vancouver island and it was an amazing trip. My first visitor since arriving home is Penny! She is a Mini Aussie doodle. She didn’t look to be shedding much but we got lots of undercoat out. Now she is all ready for spring. This was Penny’s first visit with me and she did a great job. Loves liver treats and gives lots of kisses. Mom tells me she is home sleeping off her spa day! Here are some before and after pics!

Vacation announcement and some updates!

I’m making a quick post to tell you I’ll be on vacation from April 19th, returning to work on May 2nd. Im off to visit my daughter in Victoria for the first time since she moved there right before the pandemic. I’ve never been there before and from the pictures and stories I’ve heard I think it will be a unique Canadian experience. I’ll be taking bookings by text while I’m away but I might not get back to you as fast as normal. Now for an update of sorts.

Happy Spring Everyone! It’s my second spring in Corbyville but my first since launching my business here. I was up early and I heard the dawn chorus on the Moira River with the birds and mating frogs calling out to each other, I was feeling very grateful to be here. There is a lot of work to be done around the property in spring so I’m going to hold that grateful feeling close when I’m grumbling about how weeding never ends!

Finally finishing up a business I ran for a decade in Mississauga and starting up officially in Belleville was daunting but it was time and despite my nerves things are unfolding just the way I’d hoped they would. It was hard to leave my clients (human and canine) in Mississauga. I miss my dogs! I had great clients, some I call friend, who have been supporting me from afar with reviews and recommendations on Facebook and I am lucky to know them and miss them too!

Now I’m coming up to 6 months in Belleville and I’ve met so many wonderful people and pups. I’m getting to know new doggos and their families and have switched from a higher volume shop to a more limited clientele. This gives me more time to spend with my dogs and humans! Building partnerships and friendships which ultimately benefit the dogs. I have a utopian picture in my mind of what grooming could be and this is a definite move towards that. So thank you for being so welcoming. Thank you for your advice and support, for answering my many questions about rural living and your great reviews and kind words on Facebook.

Finally, two shop updates. I have a custom table on order. In Mississauga it was a lot of small dogs with fewer big dogs. In Belleville it is a lot of big and bigger dogs with fewer small dogs. This new table will accommodate my bigger dogs more comfortably and have support for belly bands and other supportive devices to help the dogs who need it. I also ordered a new sign to hang outside my door. It is being made by a local craftsman from Ronnie Probert Woodworking Designs (link below) and I’m very excited with what we designed together. For those of you who have received my paragraph long instructions on how to get in to the shop you will know this is a good thing. Now I will be able to say “look for the sign”! That’s all for now. Again Happy Spring and see you when I get back!

I just received this positive review below from Packers’ Mom. Packers is still a puppy and he is a big gentle boy. I just saw him for his second weekly brushing appointment. I haven’t fully groomed him yet but I think he will do just fine! Mom brushes him regularly so his brushing sessions are done efficiently and he handles the brushing and the handling really well.

So today I asked Mom if he was named after the Green Bay Packers and he is! She sent me this picture of him showing his Puppy Packers Pride! Love it!

I just finished my Fear Free Grooming Certification. Without knowing it I’ve been practicing some aspects of Fear Free Grooming my entire career. The certification provides education, tools and best practices to access and alleviate Fear, Anxiety and stress (FAS) levels during the grooming process. This is a collaborative effort between parents and groomer but also can include any pet professionals who interact with your dog including Veterinarians, trainers, Pet Sitters and dog walkers. It is a whole new approach to grooming. I’m so excited to implement some of the new things I’ve learned. I’ll be posting more about Fear Free Grooming concepts in the future

This is a long post. An inspiring experience that has me feeling grateful. This is Bebe (BB). I groomed her last week. She is a special girl and I’ve been thinking about her a lot so after getting permission from Mom Smith , I wanted to do a post about Bebe and dogs like her. Bebe came to Canada from a high kill shelter in Kentucky 10 months ago, arriving with medication, incomplete background information, with many other dogs and like the trip here had not been easy or comfortable for her. She has bonded with her Mom and Dad in her new furever home but she is wary of new people. I don’t like to think of why that is but it makes me know she’s been through tough times. Mom and I decided that a meet and greet would be good before a grooming appointment because of her special circumstances. I could tell before we met in person that they were going to do whatever it took to make this experience the best for their girl. When she came I could tell she had bonded with mom and dad (although I hear secretly she’s a Daddy’s Girl). She would take treats from me but would retreat back to them if I made any moves towards her. I decided to mostly leave her alone and hope she would come to me eventually. When I talked to her I used her name and was calm. No excited talk or exaggerated actions. So we humans sat and talked and eventually Bebe laid down and relaxed while we talked about her and to her. Together with Mom and Dad (and coordination with her vet) we came up with a plan using all the tools at our disposal to get her groomed for the first time since arriving in Canada.

It’s hard sometimes to get grooming for dogs like Bebe. There can be danger for groomers with dogs that have the potential to bite. Actually all dogs have the potential to bite but some more than others. Some biting is just part of our job as groomers. Dog’s nails anyone? But a bad bite can put you out of work and those bad bites can come from dogs big and small. Grooming special circumstance dogs - dogs with disability, senior dogs, dogs with grooming or vet aggression or various combinations of these, can’t be taken lightly. There is a cost for the business for this type of special accommodation and Insurance and other issues can come into play if an employee is bitten. As to the individual groomer, I don’t fault any groomer for not taking these dogs. These dogs take extra time, extra care and special accommodations and there may be times when a groomer can do this and times when they can’t. Traditional grooming settings are often just not good for these dogs. It has to be the groomer who decides what they can handle with each and every dog from puppies to seniors and every stage in between. Beyond that it takes coordination between parent and groomer, follow up, feedback, future planning - it takes a relationship.

So with Bebe we came up with a plan, prepping for the worst case scenario while hoping for the best case scenario. We even planned for the event that she may come home not fully groomed. We used all the tools available to us and our coordinated efforts were so successful! She not only showed NO aggression or fear but was quite happy to be groomed. By the end I was getting big sloppy face kisses and I was honoured to become one of her trusted pack. We took a lot of steps that I won’t detail right now but all those steps combined gave us such a positive outcome! Truly the best we could have hoped for. It doesn’t always work out that way and sometimes plans need tweaking and dogs need longer than one visit to trust but this was a big win for sure!

Dogs can’t tell us what they’ve been through so we try our best to read their signals. Does this one not like their feet touched? Does that one not like their tail touched? What upsets the dog, what calms the dog and it is different for every single dog. Having a dog come over years to see you, you find those personality traits can change. The dog you gave their first groom to can no longer lift their hind legs for a sanitary trim or cannot support themselves on his back legs alone. So a perfect sanitary area it not as important anymore we just do what the dog can handle. Dogs also get injured and for those critical times special accommodation is needed. Their needs change over time. Being a dogs only groomer allows me to know your dog and read them better. If we watch their body language and we try to read the signals they are giving, if we show them calmness, kindness, consistency and love and affection, I believe a trusted connection can be made. Let’s be honest dogs don’t usually “like” grooming (although there are a few 😉 but grooming is a necessity for many dogs. During Covid groomers were considered necessary workers. It it great when your dog is freshly groomed but make no mistake at its heart grooming from whatever source is a medical necessity So we all as groomers do what is within our capabilities to accommodate a dog and try to give them the best experience possible within the confines of our specific situation. I truly believe that about all groomers.

I’ve often heard it said we humans could learn some lessons in perseverance, resiliency and forgiveness from dogs. Bebe is an example of that and I was so honoured to be a part of her first grooming experience in Canada. I think she will make lots of new friends here and grow her pack. Forming connections with dogs is what makes my job great. When it happens with a dog like Bebe is feels like an extra special gift.

This is Callie the Cairn Terrier. Here are before and after shots of her. This is her second visit to me! She’s a very good girl! Kisses from her are rare but I did get a little lick on my arm today! I count that a win!

This is Joey! He’s a 5 month old Golden Doodle and he just had his first groom! He was such a handsome little man! He did such a good job and had a positive introduction to grooming! Thank you Mom for getting him started early. Mom also made my job easier by prepping him for grooming by exposing him to things like, the sound of a hair dryer, having his feet and the pads of the feet touched and desensitized and getting him used to being handled and brushed. I love to see this. It can make the difference for life between positive grooming experiences or trauma each and every time for the dog. Home grooming can also become a bonding time between the family and your dog and everyone benefits. Sometimes we get dogs who have been through things and grooming is always going to be tough for them but starting out like this is the best we as groomers can hope for!

My first official personal post in Belleville! I’m thinking that as I move into this next phase of my career that I will put more of an effort into my social media. 😀

Today I had such a positive experience with a new furry friend and his Mom and Dad at my new shop! So I thought this would be the perfect time to make a first post in Belleville!

I’ve renovated and equipped my new shop in my home and I’ve been taking a few clients while I finish the transition from my business in Mississauga to my business in Belleville. Starting November 8th I’ll be taking clients from Tuesday to Saturday and offering some evening appointments.

Any questions? I have a pinned post with all the details of how I approach grooming and the special services I offer. If you’re ready to book or have any questions you can contact me through email, messenger or text. I look forward to hearing from you!

Experienced and passionate groomer recently moved to the area and taking on new clients for a premium spa-like grooming experience for you and your dog at an affordable price! For a list of services and pricing please scroll to the end of this post.

A LITTLE ABOUT ME!
* My name is Louanne but go by Lou or Lou Lou and there’s three things you need to know about me:
1) I LOVE animals and really love grooming. I am passionate about ensuring the best grooming experience for you and your dog!
2) I have 15 years experience grooming dogs. For 10 of those years I have been running my own one on one grooming business with over 500 one on one clients.
3) Last October, I moved to the Corbyville/Belleville area where I have been busy on my days off setting up my home based grooming shop. I’m so excited to get to you know your dogs (and of course to meet you!)

ONE-ON-ONE STRESS-FREE DOG GROOMING SERVICE
* Individualized, cage-free, stress-free and friendly one on one dog grooming service. Only one dog or one pack of dogs are groomed at a time to ensure full attention on your dogs from start to finish.
* Whether it’s a full service groom of washing, clipping and styling or just a quick tidy up in between grooms, I want your dog looking and feeling their best!
* Your dogs will always benefit from having and trusting their own personal groomer, the same person always. If your dog is anxious about a trip to the groomers this stress free environment will make all the difference.
* My 10 years experience in One on One grooming has naturally progressed into a grooming style that allows me to make grooming less stressful if not enjoyable by really getting to know your dog - Getting to know their “big” or “little” personalities, their likes and dislikes around grooming, so your dog has the most positive experience
* My grooming philosophy is humanity before vanity. I want your dog to look great but I want them to be happy and healthy too. Together we find the balance to have them looking great and feeling great!
* I schedule my appointment lengths (generally 2-3 hours depending on the size of your dog) so that I have time at the beginning, and at the end of each grooming to interact with them outside of the grooming table.
* As a one on one groomer, many of the dogs that come to me are seniors or dogs that don’t do well with other dogs or lots of people. These can be dogs who really struggle with grooming.Because of this, I’ve built a specialization in helping dogs that for a variety of reasons find grooming difficult.

HIGHEST QUALITY PRODUCTS AND SERVICE
* I use the highest quality tools and products for your dogs.
* Full body massages for your dog during bath time with a gentle but deep cleaning scrub. Truly a spa-like experience for your dog!
