Every pet is different, but every pet deserves a calm and comfortable visit to the vet. 🥰 Island Tides has been using Fear Free techniques since opening in March 2023. Our entire team has been certified which means that your pet’s visit is as calm as possible from the moment you arrive until the moment you leave the hospital.

We all know that feeling of high stress: the sweating, the shaking, the rapid breathing, the high blood pressure, the increased heart rate… and many of our pets feel these things when coming to the veterinary office. It has always been our goal to minimize the worries for our patients through special handling techniques, reduced interactions with others, quiet environments, positive reinforcement, etc.

For extra support, we use Comfort Packages routinely to reduce the stress and anxiety of pets entering the hospital. Comfort Packages include medication(s) that are administered to our patients ahead of their scheduled visit to further reduce stress and improve their experience.

Lower stress = better outcomes for all!

Pippin hasn’t let his wheels slow him down! After a scary accident almost 2 years ago that resulted in a broken back, Pippin had back surgery and then started rehabilitation treatment with RVT Amy. He continued to see Amy and Dr. Laura at Island Tides throughout the spring and summer last year (2023) and he continues to thrive. Despite his limited mobility and need for wheels, Pippin is still hiking with his owner, playing with his friends, and even competing (winning ribbons!!) in disc work. What an inspiration. ⭐️

Happy Holiday Season! Pet safety is important to remember this time of year. Here are a couple of tips to keep your furry friends healthy and happy:

- Chocolate and other holiday treats are toxic to pets. Keep these items out of reach.

- Cats LOVE a hanging ornament! This can be really fun for them, but also poses a risk of ingestion or injury (picture the cat climbing the tree and the tree toppling over!). Ornaments (like tinsel) are highly dangerous if ingested, and chewing on holiday lights poses a risk of electrocution.

- The holiday time of year often means large gatherings of people. Sometimes this is stressful for our family cats and dogs. A safe, quiet place for the family pet to relax is recommended during festivities. Some pets may benefit from medication support as well; please inquire with your veterinarian if you think this may be necessary.

- If you think your pet has accidentally ingested something toxic or dangerous, please seek veterinary care right away.

PSA - Ticks are around all year where we live! Earlier this week (December!) we found this creepy crawler on one of our patients. Fortunately we removed it before it was able to bite. Ticks are active anytime the temperatures are above 0 Celsius so it is important to remain diligent with your tick prevention.

Tick prevention is not only about stopping these bugs from living on your pets, but also to prevent disease transmission to your pet (including Lyme disease).

Look at Maui's accomplishments!! Wow! Congratulations!!!
Pictured with Maui is Amy (Certified Rehabilitation Technologist) who has worked with Maui's owner to help get Maui into tip-top shape for his competitions. Here's what Maui's owner, Kelly, recently wrote about Maui's journey:

"Maui is a bit of a wild child and somehow found himself in need of rehab services. He has been going to rehab every 6 weeks with Amy at Island Tides for over a year. Amy has helped me un break my dog allowing him to do what he loves Scent Work. Just before walking out the door for his October visit he reinjured himself to the point I was doubtful he would be able to compete in a scent trial that weekend or for the next little while. Amy worked her magic allowing him to compete that weekend. The ribbons are from 3 different Scent organizations and were all earned between his Oct and Nov visits. I attribute his success to the top notch rehab Maui gets through Amy. Her magic skills are top notch and have helped me keep my boy doing what he loves"
