"The Farmland"
http://ow.ly/xncuh
When I was a child in south Ontario
We'd pack up the car on a Sunday
And drive out real slow
And the farms were all around us
And the wind in the trees did blow
Oh the farmland, where did it go?
First they built a highway, and then a neighbourhood
Soon they had paved over all the land that was good
Now cars and houses occupy
The place where our food could grow
Oh the farmland, where did it go?
Oh the farmland, where did it go?
Seems it was just here a moment ago
No one said a thing, so how could we have known?
Oh the farmland, where did it go?
I'm just a tenant farmer, I don't know what I'll do
The frackers they are coming, and they say I am zone two
Well if I am zone two, I do not stand a chance
I know my days are numbered working on this land
Oh the farmland, where did it go?
We shake hands with Alberta, act like south Ontario
I can't find a place now to exercise my hoe
Oh the farmland, where did it go?
I raise crops and cattle in the Peace
We live in the shadow of a dam they call "Site C"
Well if they build that dam, my land will surely drown
And there won't be a farm left for miles around
Oh the farmland, where did it go?
If we could grow rice here, it wouldn't matter anymore
But my home's not on stilts, and drowning crops don't grow
Oh the farmland, where did it go?
No one said a thing, so how could we have known?
Oh the farmland, where did it go?
