We started September off with a Chili dog - 'cause Chili dog is thus little redheaded cutie's name π
A husband and wife team, we have been open since January 2001. Professional, insured, experienced dog grooming. Focusing on small dogs.
(23)
We opened Thoughtful Paws in January, 2001, after working in another salon and a boarding facility prior to that. We are a small βMom & Popβ shop. Staying small allows us to provide a more personalized and consistent service, build relationships with our canine clients, and be consistent. While we are modern in terms of equipment and technology, we offer old-school service by answering our phone,
booking appointments by phone, and reminding clients about their appointment with a phone call. You wonβt get annoying emails or texts from us, and if you have questions, we are happy to speak with you. You will be speaking with the people who will be working with your dog. We keep extensive notes on the style, products used, allergies and / or medical conditions, and the grooming history of your dog. Experienced, professional, and insured, and best of all, we try to keep our prices reasonable so that it's easier for clients to keep their dogs on a regular grooming schedule.

We have been back all week, but it's been so busy that we didn't have time to post anything! Thanks for the love, everyone. We were happy to see you again! We did have a fantastic vacation , spent some time in a cabin on a smaller island just relaxing. We're still here until 5 for nail trims and will be open next week normal hours except Saturday because it's a long weekend. Memphis here is the only photo we got this weekπ
And that's a wrap for a couple of weeks while we take a breather! We'll be back on August 20th, rested and relaxed. We hope you all have a happy and safe long weekend, see you in a couple of weeks! Thank you to Abby for modeling for this post.
Again, not a lot of time for photos in summer, but here are a few pups. Jake, Izzy and Tazo :)
Only managed to get a couple of photos today on a very busy day! But we feel good about getting more doggies into their shorter summer trims π
Memphis
Stuff from our 50% off wall. We have a couple of 14" sparkly collars, regular $12.50, reduced to $6.25. Martingale style limited slip collars 3 medium sized and 2 large left, medium were 13.00, no 6.50. Large were 16.00, now 8.00. Very small harnesses, suitable for small chihuahuas or toy poodles were 11.99 now 6.00. And a 12" traffic lead suitable is a large tab line for a large dog, leather was 10.99 now 5.50. Just a few old stock items we would like to part with.
In summer, the priority is always to get the dogs done and home so they can find a good spot for a sunny day nap, so I don't take a lot of time for photos. Today I finally got some though! Rosie, Ruby, Joey, Toby, Fiona, Callie, Banny and Mickey, most of today's puppers.
Just a reminder that we will be closed tomorrow, Saturday June 29th, as Canada Day falls on Monday, our regular day off. The good news is, we're here until 5 today if you need nails trimmed. Thanks, and have a great long weekend!
Just a heads up that we will be closed NEXT Saturday June 29th because July 1st is a Monday (our regular day off).
Today didn't allow a lot of time for photos - I think the hound group had a meeting and decided it was nail day. We've never had such a themed nail day! Lots of beagles and dachshunds bassets and foxhounds. Anyway, I only got a couple of shots today, the sweetest little 15 year old guy Benny and two of our regular adorables Toby and Joey.
Some of today's Grooming cuties. Cap-pooch-ino, Basil, Hanna, Cameron, Rosie, Ruby, Mickey and Kenzie.
Some of today's cuties.
Pic of Sadie for attention: We have an early morning appointment that opened up for a small dog tomorrow. If you're interested, give us a call! We like working while we're at work :)
Some of today's puppers. Moxie and Chiro, Logan, Sadie, Shamus, Henry, Julio.
Is your dog trying to tell you something? :D Just a reminder that we're here until 5:00 today if your dog's nails need a trim.
Some of the morning's puppers. Hank, Cooper, Winston, Memphis, Peso Coco. I did not manage to get the afternoon's pups, oops.
Short notice appointment opening alert! We had a client reschedule an early morning Friday appointment. We always try to fill them. It's better for us - We like to be working when we're at work and we like to maintain the revenue. It's better for clients - if we didn't make an effort to fill appointments, eventually we would have to raise prices to make up for the losses. And it's better for people whose schedules make it hard to pre-book. So if you were looking to have your small dog groomed and early Friday morning is an option for you, give us a call at 250-334-2888 to see if it's still available. Thanks!
Some of today's pups and some of Saturday's that I didn't get time to post :)
Here are some of today pups. I didn't manage to get photos of everyone, but at least some π Katie, Teddy, Teakaa, Lucy and Pip.
A few of this morning's pups, with a reminder that yes, we do still do drop in nails, Tuesday to Saturday, 8 - 12 and 1 - 5.
Bob's shedding tells us that the warm weather has arrived!
So far, the new scheduling is working well! Speaking of scheduling, we had an appointment for a small dog open up for Saturday. Call us if you are interested and we'll book you if it's available. Thanks! Pic for attention.

Maggie is helping us remind you that this is our last week of the 'old' schedule of Tuesday- Saturday 8 - 4. Starting next week, we will still be Tuesday to Saturday, but from 8 - 12 and 1 - 5, closing between 12 and 1 for an uninterrupted hour - no drop offs, pick ups or nail trims over the "lunch" hour, so that we can catch up if we get behind and / or spell each other off for a short lunch break. The uninterrupted hour will be essential with our new schedule, so we will be strict about being closed during that hour, even if one or both of us are still there working. Thank you in advance for your understanding and for respecting our hours. We also appreciate your patience and understanding as we adjust to a new schedule and tweak it during a very busy time. Thank you!
Our apologies. Usually I post in long weekends that we will be closed on the Saturday and I forgot to do so. If you dropped in for nail trimming to find our door locked on Saturday, I do apologize. We're back as always to our Tuesday t Saturday drop ins. Thanks!
Photo of Alder for attention.
Oops. I made a booking error and had someone scheduled in twice. Which means that we have an opening on Tuesday morning for a small dog. If you were hoping to get your dog groomed sooner rather than later, my error is your opportunity as no one on our cancel list could make it. Give us a call to see if it's still available :)
A few of today's pups, Molly, Austin and Tazo.
A couple of today's doggies feeling out of this world π Dahly and Boris
Haven't had a lot of time for photo ops recently, but here are a couple from today π

On behalf of all groomers, I feel like I need to answer "How long does it take?". The answer is, it depends. It may seem more simple than that, but it's not, and here's why: Working with dogs requires enormous patience and dogs are individuals. At least three times in the last week I've had people surprised that it can take 2 to 2.5 hours to do a full grooming. It can easily take that long, sometimes even longer if there are interruptions, or if a dog has an accident requiring clean up or re-bathing, if a client booked earlier does, putting us behind, or if there are behavior, medical or other issues to be dealt with. We are living beings, working with living beings. Stuff happens. We often ask for cushion time with new dogs or if our day has been particularly busy with interruptions. With new dogs, we don't know your dog. Maybe they will love being brushed, maybe they will see the brush and think it's evil and need to be slowly shown that it isn't. Maybe they will stand rock solid for nail trimming. Maybe they will want to turn nail trimming into a full-scale dog rodeo and need us to slow down and show them that it's okay to have nails trimmed. Maybe your dog will be fine with the bath, or maybe it will think soapy water is scary stuff and need us to slow down and teach them that it's not. Maybe your dog won't mind the dryer, or maybe they will think we are sorcerers who conjured up a scary hurricane and need us to slow down and either get them used to the blow dryer or dry them in a more passive way that takes longer. Maybe your dog will stand still for clipping and scissoring, or maybe your dog will be excited or interested in every noise, every passing car, every other person or dog, and act like a hyperactive child fed caffeine and a candy bar. Maybe your dog will not have any bathroom accidents (and neither will anyone else), or maybe they didn't know they were going to the groomer and didn't do all of their business before they came. Maybe your dog will be
Molly is hanging out for a bit this afternoon. She does a lap, then goes to one of us for scritches, does another lap, comes back for more scritches. π
Hehe. I sometimes say that this job isn't just playing with puppies all day, but part of the day really is playing with puppies π
Sometimes, Buddy needs a break just to run around and get out some energy partway through the scissoring. This was one of those times π€£
Walter takes this to the next level LOL! While his human is there, he cries. She feels bad and sometimes gives him cookies (inadvertently rewarding the noise). As soon as she goes, Walter comes trotting in, tail wagging. If the table is dropped to its low position he heads straight there and jumps on it, ready. Today it wasn't, so he trotted, tail wagging, over to Scott and sat down up against Scott's leg π drama is sometimes real anxiety, and sometimes, it's just a means to an end (in this case cookies). π
While sometimes dogs will look like they would rather be doing something else with their day on the way in, the vast majority are like Abby. Once they are in and their human is gone, they are absolutely fine and love the attention they are getting. It really is like dropping a toddler off at daycare :)
This is not anyone's favorite January haircut. However, this is the only choice when a dog is this matted. Matting like this is uncomfortable for the dog and terrifying for the groomer. The video does not adequately show the care and effort taken in each stroke of the clipper as I try to chip away at solid mats. It looks like I'm working quickly, but there is a lot of care being taken in those short little strokes not to pull the skin. It also doesn't adequately show my stress level. Clippers can't glide through mats. You have to find a way under them and it's not always easy. There is always, always a risk that skin could get pulled into the clipper on a dog that is this matted. Fortunately it did not in this case. Luckily this dog was very complacent. Often dogs this matted aren't used to grooming and don't hold this still / cooperate this well, adding extra challenge. Matting this severe is hard on the dog. It tugs at their skin and is uncomfortable for them. Grooming matted dogs is stressful, and hard on blades and clippers. This is why we recommend that dogs get groomed regularly.
