Working Student/Summer Internship Opportunity – Equestrian Groom & Rider

Are you passionate about horses and eager to gain hands-on experience in the equestrian world? We are looking for a dedicated working student/summer intern to join our team! This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who wants to improve their riding, learn more about horse care and management, and gain experience grooming at competitions.

What We Offer:

Hardworking and reliable with a strong work ethic

This photo was taken 20 years ago—the day I sold the first horse I trained.

I bought him as a 3-year-old (handpicked by my trainer), backed him with guidance, and sold him when he was 5. I was just 15 years old at the time.

This moment, captured by my stepfather, was taken right before I loaded him into the trailer to say goodbye.

This horse completely changed my riding career. He made me braver and more skilled. I hit the dirt more than a few times training him to jump, but I learned countless life lessons through those challenges.

The orange jacket I’m wearing was my trail-riding uniform. We used to spend hours riding through the bush, exploring trails with cross-country jumps. There were times I had to walk home horseless when he refused new obstacles, but once we worked through those kinks, we could tackle anything together. In fact, we often inspired friends to try obstacles they hadn’t before. During hunting season, we always wore orange for safety.

Because of him, I moved on to Thoroughbreds and Warmbloods and pursued eventing.

This incredible horse was sold to a girl younger than I was at the time, and she still owns and rides him to this day, and we keep in touch !

I remember riding Cassanova like it was yesterday. He’ll always have a special place in my heart.

Owning and caring for a horse is a rewarding but significant commitment. It’s essential to understand the costs involved, both for horse owners and boarders.

Below is an outline of the typical expenses associated with horse care and how board fees are determined.

Monthly Costs of Horse Care

🥕Feed Costs:
Hay: Horses eat approximately 25 pounds of hay per day. A 40-pound bale costs $19, which adds up to $356.25 per month per horse.

Grain: Horses typically require additional grain or supplements, costing about $100 per month.

🥕Total Feed Costs: $456.25/month per horse.

🧲Farrier Costs:
Horses need regular hoof care every 4–8 weeks.

Trims cost $70, while full shoeing can cost up to $200. On average, this works out to $100/month.

👩‍⚕️Veterinary Costs:
Routine veterinary care, vaccinations, and emergency preparedness average about $100 per month.

Total Farrier & Vet Costs: $200/month per horse.

💵Labor Costs:
Daily care includes feeding 3-4 times a day, cleaning stalls, and checking on horses’ well-being.

On average, 1.75 hours of labor per horse per day at $20/hour costs $1,050/month.

How Board Fees Are Determined
Board fees are designed to cover a portion of the expenses listed above while providing high-quality care for your horse.

At our facility, the standard monthly board fee is $900, which includes:

Daily feeding (3x per day).
Stall cleaning and bedding.
Turnout and basic care.
Water filled and cleaned.
Shavings put in and taken out.

Why Board Fees Don’t Cover Full Costs
While $900 covers some of the expenses, the reality is that horse care often exceeds the amount charged for board. Additional costs, such as facility maintenance, insurance, utilities, and staff wages, are not fully accounted for in the board fee.

This is why many barns supplement board fees with lesson programs, training, or other services.

Additional Costs for Horse Owners
As a horse owner, there are also occasional costs to consider, such as:

Tack, grooming supplies, and blankets.
Emergency vet visits or major medical treatments.
Training or lessons (if applicable).
