🐾 Training Tip Tuesday!
Different Motivators for Different Dogs
Not all dogs are motivated by the same things — and that’s okay!
Finding your dog’s top motivator is the secret to faster learning, better engagement, and a more joyful training experience. 💛
Here are the 4 main motivator types to look for:
🍖 1. Food-Motivated Dogs
These pups learn FAST when food is involved!
Use a mix of:
✔ high-value treats (chicken, cheese, liver)
✔ medium-value treats (kibble, store-bought rewards)
✔ “jackpot” rewards for big wins
Great for: shaping new behaviors, counterconditioning, confidence work.
🎾 2. Toy or Play Motivated Dogs
Some dogs live for tug, fetch, or a good squeaky toy!
Use toys when you want to:
✔ build enthusiasm
✔ reward movement-based behaviors
✔ increase drive and focus
Perfect for: herding breeds, terriers, working dogs, and high-energy pups.
🥰 3. Affection-Motivated Dogs
These are your Velcro dogs!
They work for:
✔ praise
✔ cuddles
✔ a happy voice
✔ being close to you
Great for calm work, bonding, and reinforcing behavior without overstimulation.
🌍 4. Environmentally Motivated Dogs
These dogs find the world more exciting than treats or toys (hello, hounds! 👋).
Use the environment AS the reward:
✔ “sniff breaks”
✔ being released to greet someone
✔ access to a trail, tree, or interesting smell
This turns distractions into powerful training tools!
🌟 PRO TIP:
Most dogs have more than one motivator. Mix and match them to keep training FUN, fresh, and rewarding!
