Today’s a mix of happy and sad feels at The Paw Shop as we say goodbye to Kai, who’s been with us in one way or another since before we even opened our doors! Kai’s dad was one of the incredible people who helped with our renovations before the shop opened. Kai often tagged along as a little guy back then, and it's been amazing to watch him grow.

Fast forward 15 years, and Kai became our summer student, bringing his awesome energy and charm to the shop!

This summer, we were lucky enough to have him back, and he brought all the good vibes that our team and customers have loved. But now, it's time for Kai to head off to university and conquer the world! 

Kai, you’re an absolute rockstar, and anyone who’s met you knows exactly what we mean. We’ll miss you tons, but we’re so excited to see what amazing things you’ll do next. Keep shining, Kai!

Important message from Steeples Veterinary Clinic

❤ Good morning everyone! Andrew here, with a message from management.
After reading some pretty negative comments over the weekend about the after-hours emergency care in our community, we thought it would be a great time to talk about it again. The East Kootenay Veterinary Group was born out of a need for a long-term and sustainable solution to providing the much needed after-hours emergency care that our area needs.
Clinics in larger cities have the ability to rely on 24-hour emergency hospitals to provide this service for emergencies during the day and night so the general practice clinics do not need to. Alternatively, clinics in smaller towns are not able to routinely provide after-hours care which leaves people having to drive, sometimes hours away, to the closest city centre to reach these emergency hospitals. Then we have communities like Cranbrook - Not big enough for a 24 hour emergency centre, but certainly in need of emergency veterinary care. This means that all clinics in our area have to balance general practice (preventive health, vaccinations, etc.) along with emergencies every day and night. This puts a lot of pressure on the veterinary staff in order to balance these two needs on a daily basis. The growing demand for veterinary care, and a nation-wide shortage of veterinary staff puts a huge strain on everyone in the veterinary industry. The industry itself is plagued with over-work, burnout, and the inevitable mental health challenges that come with working in such a physically and emotional demanding field.
This is why we came to the agreement to team up with all the clinics in the East Kootenays to ensure we can continue to provide this service to our area. Yes, that means sometimes the on-call clinic is in Invermere or Creston, and yes that is a little farther away. But, at this time, it is an absolute necessity to continue to provide reliable after-hours care that our area needs.
Balancing general practice with emergency care is extremely taxing on the veterinary staff in the community and all the staff at all the clinics are some of the most dedicated and hardest working people I have ever met. It's heartbreaking seeing the work that the veterinary staff puts in, day in and day out, and the sacrifices made, only to read comments saying they need to do more. The strain on the veterinary community is very real and well documented. So we ask our wonderful community to be understanding of the difficult decisions we have to make as a group in order to continue to provide the level of care our community deserves.
We love you all, and we will continue to work incredibly hard to care for you and your animals. Thank you for hearing us out. ❤

We are absolutely devastated to hear about the wildfire damage in Jasper. Our hearts go out to the people and animals affected.

Wildfire awareness is incredibly important nowadays so we want to share some tips that are crucial for pet owners to be aware of in times like this. Developing a comprehensive strategy for evacuating pets during wildfires is imperative to everyone’s safety.

• Formulate a detailed evacuation plan to proactively address uncertainties and facilitate a seamless evacuation process.
• Regularly rehearse this plan with your pets to aid in their adjustment and reduce stress during emergencies.
• Conduct practice evacuations to acclimate your pets to carriers or trailers.
• Stay aware of local wildfire updates and weather forecasts.
• Ensure your pets carry proper identification, such as microchips or tags.
• Prepare a pet emergency kit containing essentials and comforting items.
• Maintain a list of pet-friendly accommodations located outside wildfire-affected areas as potential evacuation destinations.

Remaining prepared and well-informed about emergency procedures is essential for ensuring the welfare of your cherished animal companions.

Happy Long Weekend!

We continue to introduce The Paw Shop awesome team members. This week we are featuring Sarah, who has been with us since 2020.

Sarah is pictured with Vera 🐕 and Mabel 🐕, also known as ‘the old ladies’. Both 12 years old, they are enjoying the slower pace of their senior years. You may also recognize them as frequent models on our social media posts.

Sarah loves working at The Paw Shop due to the opportunities to help people provide the best life for their pets. Being able to give pets and treats to all the doggy visitors is right up there too! Really, it is ALL about the animals.🙂

Her favourite dog breeds are Siberian Husky and German Shepherd, as illustrated in the picture :). Sarah feeds her dogs both Big Country Raw and Nature’s Logic. Their favourite product sold here is the Chuck-It Ultra ball. Never bored if there is a chuck-it ball around.

When not working or walking the dogs, Sarah loves all kinds of cycling, hiking and nature photography; basically anything outside.

She describes herself as inquisitive, articulate and loyal. A favourite quote of hers is one by Arthur Ashe, “Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can.” And on that note, the best advice she’s been given is that “life is a process, not an event.” You may have noticed, patience wasn’t one of her traits!

And your dogs will tell you Sarah is the one with the magic treat pocket.😄

A new week and another team member introduction here at The Paw Shop. 🙂

This week it is the awesome, hard-working Dalton, pictured with one of his two cats, Bruce. Mac is a little shy and didn’t want to be included. :) Dalton has been with us since 2023 and has been a great addition to the team.

You may not have met Dalton yet as his main responsibilities include unloading/putting away stock and keeping our back room organized. Be sure to say hello when you see him out front.

Dalton says he loves working at The Paw Shop because it feels positive to help others take care of their pets. His favourite breeds of cats are Maine C**n or Ragdoll. 🐈

He describes himself as focused, quiet and energetic. These qualities complement his work here; we would like to add that he is detail-oriented, organized and friendly.

Outside of work, Dalton enjoys hiking with his cats, playing video games and Dungeons and Dragons. You might well see Dalton and Bruce cruising around Cranbrook on his bike with Bruce riding in the backpack on his back.

He says the best advice he’s ever been given is to learn from your mistakes.

And his, or should we say Bruce’s and Mac’s favourite product is the Applaws fish treats.
