DOES YOUR HORSE TRIP? THE IMPORTANCE OF AWARENESS

If we just want to poke around trail riding, we might not think that we need collection and balance.

I have found that horses that carry a lot of brace in the base of their neck or shoulders have a common trait: they trip.

They may seem quiet or dull or perhaps lazy. Others may seem forward and not centred. If these horses trip on a downhill or on a trot, they can nearly trip over.

I've worked both of these types and through improving their awareness, I have reduced the tripping.

I see the tripping as a consequence of not picking up their feet properly. They have a lot of weight on their front end, and they are not engaging their hindquarter enough.

If you are keen to help your horse stop tripping:

- Look at how your horse processes things around them. How aware are they? How sensitive are they?

- Use exercises that get them more mobile in their body control to encourage them to use their body better

- Get them to follow feel, not lean on pressure

- Teach them to respond softly to the lead rope and reins. That soft movement needs to go all the way through to their feet.

- Lots of backing up - as you back up place their head in different positions.

- Lift your horses up with the reins, stopping them from burying down.

-Try tricky, different obstacles so that your horse has to place it's feet carefully. Do this once you have done the things above, so that they can think slowly and move carefully, rather than blundering through.

ALSO

One thing I didn’t mention in this article was the physical background to tripping. This article is more about the horses that I have helped, and the similar mindset that they all shared.

I have also helped horses that have been diagnosed with being “unsound”. Once I was able to get a mind-set shift on them, they began to heal.

Please see this article as a piece of what could be an answer for your horse.

If feet & skeleton are healthy we do need to address their minds: a healthy mind keeps a healthy body.

Sometimes we need to adjust the mind first; sometimes we need to adjust the body first.
