What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is infection and inflammation of the periodontium (the tissues that surround and support the teeth) due to plaque bacteria and the host's response to the bacterial insult.

🚨 Important Notice for Dog Owners Planning Travel to the United States 🚨

Starting August 1, 2024, new guidelines for exporting dogs to the United States will be implemented to reduce the risk of canine rabies. These changes will make entering the US with any dog more complex.

Key Requirements:
- Age: Dogs must be at least 6 months old.
- Health: Dogs must be healthy upon arrival.
- Paperwork: A completed CDC Dog Import Form (available from July 15, 2024).
- Port of Entry: Indicate the US port of entry.
- Photo: Include a photo of the dog.
- Rabies-Free Certification: Certification that the dog has only been in rabies-free or low-risk countries in the last 6 months (including proof through attached veterinary records).
- Microchip: Dogs must be microchipped with an ISO-compliant microchip issued by a Canadian licensed veterinarian.
- CFIA Endorsement: Paperwork endorsed by a CFIA Official Veterinarian

Additional Requirements:
- If the dog has been to a high-risk rabies country in the last 6 months, further requirements will apply.

Is it a tick? a spider? a lump? a ni**le? (yes, a ni**le)

Owners sometimes confuse ticks with other types of insects or spiders, lumps or bumps and yes, even their pets ni**les.

There is no shame in mistaking one of these other things as a tick. Or wondering "is this a tick?"

Wondering these things means you are staying vigilant and noticing something different.

So, what does a tick look like?

The answer:
An adult tick has eight legs. They have only two body parts, the basis capitulum (which is the head and thorax fused together) and the abdomen.

Ticks are flat top-to-bottom as opposed to being flat side-to-side like a flea. They are also very difficult to squish or crush.

The summer heat feels great but when it gets too hot we need to make sure our pets stay safe.

Contact us immediately if you think your pet may be experiencing heatstroke!

Signs of heatstroke:

- Excessive panting
- Muscle twitching
- Anxious or dazed look
- Vomiting
- Weakness
- Increased drooling
- Diarrhea

Hot summer weather is just around the corner!

Is it too tot for a walk with my dog?

Press your hand on the sidewalk for 7 seconds. If it's too hot for you, it's too hot for them!

If you need to go for a walk make sure to do so in the morning or evening when the weather is cooler. Keep the pace slow and relaxed.

Tick Safety is Important all year!

Did you know?

Here in Nova Scotia, we have several kinds of ticks. Currently, only the blacklegged tick carries the bacteria and virus that cause tick borne diseases, such as Lyme disease. Other tick borne diseases can still impact your pets health.

How do you protect your pet?

Your best path to prevention is an ingestible or topical flea & tick medication (parasiticide) and a lyme vaccine! There are several options available to suit your pets needs.

Today is Pet Memorial Day. The hardest part of pet ownership is saying goodbye. We are here to guide you through the process and answer any questions you have. One of the ways people grieve the loss of a pet is to share happy and sweet memories of them. Share a memory of a beloved pet who has passed over the rainbow bridge by tagging us. It is National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day! Preventative care for our feline friends is very important. We want to make sure they are healthy through all stages of their life. That is why We strive to create a fear-free environment for all animals. Successful consultations with a vet require cats to have positive experiences with their veterinary team in order to ensure future care does not provide unnecessary stress. A collaborative approach between our staff and owners helps provide the best results for stress free visits. Here are the steps for you to help creating fear-free visits for your Cat(s): - Use a top opening carrier, preferably. - Leave the carrier in an area of the house easily accessible to your cat and occasionally put treats or toys in there for him/her to find. - Line the carrier with towels sprayed with Feliway Pheromone Spray prior to bringing your cat in so that he has a “safe” and familiar place to hide in if he feels like it. - Bring your cat in for regular free “fun” visits where he/she can sit on the scale and receive treats and pets if she desires. - Very nervous cats may also benefit from taking an anti-anxiety supplement called Zylkene prior to the visit.
