Nova Scotia SPCA - Dartmouth Shelter

Nova Scotia SPCA - Dartmouth Shelter Rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming pets in need thanks to animal-lovers like you. We take in animals by appointment only so please call ahead. We can help.
(468)

The Nova Scotia SPCA accepts animals into its care regardless of their age or health. We also follow no-kill principles which means we do not euthanize animals for space. Unexpected life situations happen and the SPCA strives to be approachable, non-judgemental and understanding. On average, healthy and friendly animals are adopted into loving families in less than two weeks! You simply have to ca

ll and arrange an appointment so the shelter can learn about what is the most suitable type of home for your pet. The appointment also allows the shelter to prepare a cozy space for your pet to make the transition as smooth as possible. We understand how difficult it is to surrender a pet and thank all owners who are able to make the best decision for their pet. To learn more visit: https://www.novascotiaspca.ca/animal-surrender/

In August 2023, five-year old Reggie was found stray and brought to safety at the SPCA Kings Shelter by a Good Samaritan. It was obvious that life on the streets had not been easy for Reggie. 💔 When he arrived, he had open wounds at the base of his tail, patchy fur and many scabs. Showered with care and affection, Reggie healed and was put up for adoption in October. And that’s when his biggest wish came true. ✨

We did a poll with the pets in our shelters and found out:

🔹 Dogs love freeze-dried treats
🔹 Cats can’t make up their mind between temptations and squeezable tubes
🔹 Bunnies will take any chew toy

The toy list is long, but kongs and puzzle treats are a fan favourite for dogs, and crinkle balls are a hit with the kitties. ⚾️

Just a few things our furry friends enjoyed this Treat Week (and beyond!). And you can help make sure those treats are never missing from our shelters for the hundreds of pets that come in each month. 🥹

How? By fundraising or donating for our Treat Week campaign. Visit bit.ly/TreatWeek2025 today. ⬅

Also, the person/team who fundraisers the most gets to name a litter of kittens or puppies. 👀

Meet Skitty! 🐾💖
This sweet senior lady of 14 years young is currently in foster care, and here's what her foster family has to say about her:

"Skitty is the ultimate cuddle buddy! She loves to play, purr, and give headbutts. While she needs a little time and patience to warm up, once she trusts you, she’s an absolute sweetheart. Skitty is incredibly loving, enjoys her treats, and is so thankful for the safety and love she’s found. She’s a gentle soul who would thrive in a quiet, loving home."

Everyone say hello to Bull! 👋

This handsome pup is available for adoption from the Colchester SPCA. If you are interested in meeting this cutie, please see his profile and adoption information below! ⬇️

If you are not in a position to adopt at this time, please think about sharing Bull's post. 🥰

Meet Bull!

Age: ~13 years
Gender: Male, neutered
Breed: Amstaff mix
Kids: Ages 10+
Dogs: No
Cats: No

Bull is aged to perfection at 13 years old! This snuggly, well-mannered couch potato would be an amazing addition to most homes. Bull originally came into our care as a stray, but is ready to put his street days behind him and find a loving home to settle down in. If you are seeking a new canine companion who is more of a lover than a fighter, this is the dog for you. Don't let his old age fool you, Bull is still full of energy, life, and lots of cuddles!

Please ask staff about his special adoption fee!

**Please be aware that as per SPCA policy all members of the household MUST meet the dog in person before being considered as a potential adopter. If traveling a distance, we highly encourage contacting the shelter to verify adoption status prior to making the trip.***

Interested in adding this adorable adoptable to your family? We're so excited for you! Please drop by our shelter to meet them in person so we can officially start the adoption process. Online applications alone do not hold animals. You'll be able to find our address and hours here: www.novascotiaspca.ca/shelters/colchester-shelter/. If you have questions, we'd love to help. You can call us at 902-893-7968 or e-mail [email protected].

You can find our online dog adoption application here: https://www.novascotiaspca.ca/dog-adoption-application/

Our furry friends love a good treat, but did you know treats should not make up more than 10% of your pet’s daily calories? 🧐

And there are other factors that should be taken into consideration, such as size, weight, a sensitive stomach, or how active your pet is.

This reminder comes at the right time because it is Treat Week. Our annual fundraiser where we’re all about treating ourselves but also helping a great cause! 🤩

We’re fundraising not only for those treats pets love so much, but for their care while in our shelters across the province. 🥹

And you can play a part in their journey towards their happily ever after either by fundraising or making a donation.

Visit bit.ly/TreatWeek2025 today to be a part of the best and sweetest time of year. ⬅

Bringing home a puppy is like opening a new chapter – full of wiggly greetings, belly rubs, and just the right amount of mischief. 🐶 But, as any puppy parent knows, it’s not without its challenges. Java’s journey started long before she found her happily ever after. Thanks to the Nova Scotia SPCA’s PUP program, Java’s mom was later spayed, preventing future unexpected litters – and Java received the care she needed. 🥰
