The Nova Scotia SPCA accepts animals into its care regardless of their age or health. We also follow no-kill principles which means we do not euthanize animals for space. Unexpected life situations happen and the SPCA strives to be approachable, non-judgemental and understanding. On average, healthy and friendly animals are adopted into loving families in less than two weeks! You simply have to ca

ll and arrange an appointment so the shelter can learn about what is the most suitable type of home for your pet. The appointment also allows the shelter to prepare a cozy space for your pet to make the transition as smooth as possible. We understand how difficult it is to surrender a pet and thank all owners who are able to make the best decision for their pet. To learn more visit: https://www.novascotiaspca.ca/animal-surrender/

Meet Sookie:❤ Your Sweet Senior Companion! - Special adoption fee

Sookie has reactions to the flea medication Revolution and can only use Advantage Multi. He will need Prednisolone and Gabapentin long term continued through your own vet. Sookie does have early kidney disease. 🐾

What the foster has to say about Sookie:

"Sookie, AKA Li'l Blep, is your next perfectly affectionate black cat. This is a true East Coast Cat, and he will gladly eat any fish-related soft food and treats. Sookie is extremely photogenic with his Li'l Blep, due to being mostly toothless. 🦷
Sookie once heard that black cats are often named Shadow, and really took that to heart - he prioritizes escorting you around your home. If this little man isn't in the same room as you, it won't be long until he is.
When Sookie opens up to you, prepare to have the most delightful weighted blanket that can't get enough face scratches. Watching TV?📺 He'll be on your shoulder. Playing XBox? 🕹He'll be on your bosom. Lying in bed? He'll be on your back. Sookie has no problems staying on your chest for hours at a time - tested by his foster mom as she played video games and watched TV with him perched happily.😁
Sookie would do best with an owner not opposed to leaving a tap running a continuous small stream of water. 🚰He thrives with the feeding routine of 1) Eat his wet food 2) Sink to wash his face, then 3) Water bowl to drink. He hates drinking from dirty water, which is any water he sticks his face into right after he's been eating.
Sookie is an absolute professional at taking his daily medication, and does not bite or scratch. He is an extremely quick learner, and adapts to new routines very quickly - especially if you have a salmon churu."

We’re back with Season 3 of the Nova Scotia SPCA PAW’dcast! 🤩 And we’re excited to start with a fun episode about how we need to nap more.

Well, we’re not napping more. Our doggo friends are. This episode is all about why nap time is beneficial and what Operation Hit Snooze is. 💤 Any guesses?

Also, we’d like to know what type of music you think each animal would listen to during nap time. Tell us in the comments. ⬇️

Apparently, reggae makes it on a dog’s playlist. Who would have thought? 🤔

Meet Rachel! 🐾

Rachel is a sweet 9-year-old girl currently in a loving foster home. She has a gentle spirit and is looking for a quiet, safe forever home to call her own. Rachel has a visual impairment, which gives her a unique, endearing look (She also has a cute curl in her ear) — but don’t let that fool you—this girl is hard working in her biscuit-making skills! You’ll often find her kneading away on her back with her paws in the air, or standing in the middle of the room, working away with all her heart. 🌷🍪

Though Rachel is a bit shy at first, she’s the kindest, most loving cat you could meet once she feels comfortable. She doesn’t seek out affection on her own, but when you approach her, she’ll shower you with purrs, little chirps, and loving rubs against your legs and hands. Her quiet nature makes her the perfect companion for someone looking for a calm and sweet kitty who will snuggle up and enjoy her cozy naps or gaze out the window in peace.🐾

Rachel would thrive in a peaceful, indoor-only home without children or dogs, where she can feel secure and loved. If you’re looking for a loving, low-key feline friend to bring joy into your life, Rachel might be the perfect match! ❤️

Meet Shadow and Matty, this sweet duo are looking for a lovely home to call their own! 🥰
These 9 year old boys go together like peanut butter and jelly, 🥜 macaroni and cheese, 🧀Batman and Robin. 🦸It's rare to see one and not the other.
They are two very similar looking kitties, but it's quite easy to tell them apart because Shadow only has one eye! This doesn't seem to affect his day to day life or activities.
Matty and Shadow are such love bugs and are always seeking out their people for some love and attention. 💗

You can read more about them at the link below:

Our 2025 resolution is to nap more. Well, for our doggos to nap more.

Which is why we’re introducing...Operation Hit Snooze! 🤩

At our Dartmouth Shelter, we’re starting a special dog nap time from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. every day to give our furry friends the rest they deserve! That means no visitors during that hour.

Why Nap Time? 🤔

Research shows that rest plays a big role in keeping shelter dogs happy and healthy.

🔹 Calm Minds: Quiet hours reduce stress and anxiety.
🔹 Strong Bodies: Rest supports their immune systems and overall health.
🔹 Happy Hearts: Well-rested dogs are more playful and sociable, ready to meet their future loving families!

We’re dedicated to creating a peaceful environment where our shelter pups can truly thrive. Thank you for supporting their journey to their happily ever after! ☺️

And you can help our doggos even further by supporting this program at www.novascotiaspca.ca/hitsnooze/. ⬅️ Your donation will go towards supplies and resources to get the program up and running.

P.S.: This initiative is currently at the Dartmouth Shelter only.

Did you know...

Doggos need to nap during the day? 🤔 Dogs need between 12-18 hours of sleep, depending on their age, and not just during the night. ✨

They are polyphasic sleepers, a fancy way of saying they don’t get all of their sleep in one session. 💤

Research shows that increased daytime rest can enhance a dog’s well-being.

🔹Reduced Stress: A calm environment helps lower stress levels.
🔹Improved Health: Adequate rest supports immune function and overall health.
🔹Enhanced Behavior: Well-rested dogs are more sociable.

And maybe not so backed by research, their cuteness levels increase when they nap. 🥹

How much of a sleeper is your doggo?

And if you want to share photos of dogs napping in the comments, please don’t let us stop you. 👀

This sweet 11-year-old senior lady is on the lookout for a calm, adult-only home where she can feel safe and loved. Boeing may be shy at first and will need some time to adjust, but once she’s comfortable, we believe she’ll truly shine. ☀️

Meet Windsor,✨ 🤩 a handsome 11-year-old Border Collie who’s full of personality! Windsor loves being outside, especially when he has a bunch of balls to toss around and chase. True to his breed, he enjoys a good game of herding, (he can't live with a cat) but he’s also content to curl up next to you for a nap when it’s time to relax. 😴

Windsor is highly trainable and loves keeping his sharp mind engaged with basic training sessions. Though he has a 4/6 heart murmur and osteoarthritis, he continues to live life to the fullest with the help of long-term pain meds. He may be a bit shy at first and prefers slow introductions to new people and environments, but once he warms up, he’s a loyal and loving companion. ❤🌟

Windsor would thrive in an adult-only home where someone can be around most of the time to support his potty training progress (crate training is recommended). His sweet nature and love for life will bring endless joy and smiles. If you’re looking for a gentle, affectionate dog to share your life with, Windsor could be the perfect match for you! 💙🐾

Update: Lucy has been adopted ❤️

Meet Lucy,❤🐾 a sweet 1-year-old Amstaff who dreams of nothing more than curling up at your feet, cozy and content. Whether it’s after a fun walk or a lively game of fetch, her wagging tail will show you just how much she loves being close to her people, offering and receiving affection.

Lucy can be a little cautious with new faces and situations, so she appreciates slow introductions. Give her time to warm up, and she’ll become your loyal, lifelong friend. Though she has mild hip dysplasia, she doesn’t require medication at this time. She would thrive in an adult-only home, where she can maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle to stay feeling her best. 💪

Lucy is looking for a calm, patient home where she can feel safe and secure, with someone who understands her more reserved nature. Her favorite part of the day? Curling up in her favorite spot for a peaceful nap, knowing she’s surrounded by family and love. If you're looking for a loyal companion who just needs time to trust, Lucy might be your perfect match! 💖

Meet Sweetie!😻 This lively 2-year-old princess is currently in a loving foster home, and here’s what her foster has to say about her:

"Sweetie is a very vocal cat who loves to let you know exactly what she needs. She’s a bit of a cuddle queen—when she’s in the mood! She’ll often come to you when she wants some pets or attention. Sweetie gets along great with adults and older kids, and she absolutely loves when you call her name as you enter a room. Playtime is her favorite, especially when it involves tossing toys around. And when it comes to food, she’s highly motivated—she’s a big fan of wet food and can’t resist sneaking a bite of salad!" 🥗

Sweetie is on a special Vet prescribed diet called Anallergenic and takes medication to help keep her coat soft and healthy while managing skin allergies. She will thrive in a loving home that can continue to care for her needs. ❤🐾

If you’re looking for a playful, chatty, and affectionate companion, Sweetie might just be your perfect match! Sweetie is currently in a foster home through the Dartmouth SPCA - please email for more info and we can arrange a meeting [email protected] 🏠

It’s New Year’s Eve! 🥂

Hey, it’s me, Tuxie! There’s still time to fetch one last good deed for the year! Donate before midnight to help more pets in need and receive your 2024 charitable tax receipt. www.novascotiaspca.ca/donate

As we say fur-well to 2024, let’s paws and reflect on an amazing year filled with wagging tails, gentle purrs, and second chances. You changed lives for thousands of pets in Nova Scotia. Thank you for giving my furry friends hope, healing, and homes – we couldn’t be more grateful! 💖

Now, let’s celebrate the kindness and compassion that made this year unforgettable! Whether you’ve got a playful pup, a purring companion, or just a big heart for animals, let’s finish the year with some fun. Share your favourite 2024 pet picture in the comments – we’d love to see your paw-some friends! 🐶🐱

Let’s start with me! 🎩 As my name suggests, I’m all dressed up and ready to ring in 2025 in style – because who does a tuxedo better than me? I’m a sweet little kitty at our Cape Breton shelter, and I’d love to be your dapper companion in the new year. Come meet me and many of my other furry friends at our six Nova Scotia SPCA shelters.

Here’s to a tail-wagging, whisker-tingling 2025 filled with love, joy, and new beginnings for every pet in need. See you next year!

(P.S. Please remember that many of my furry friends have extreme anxiety and panic when they hear fireworks. Running away from the noise is a survival instinct, and many friends go missing. It’s best to keep your pet inside at home, so they are safe and secure.)

Hi, I'm Baby! 🐾 And yes, I’m a BIG baby – in more ways than one! 😸 I’m 15 years old, social, outgoing, and full of personality. Maybe I'm a little on the heavier side, but that's just more of me to love! ❤️ I have a gorgeous fur coat (thanks to all those brushing sessions) and I love to play with my toy mouse 🐭. I'm not really into lap cuddles, but I make up for it with lots of love and affection! 😻

I do have a couple of things to mention. I have severe osteoarthritis (DJD) and allergies, so I need to take medication long-term and get monthly Solensia injections. But don’t worry, I’m still the sweetest, most lovable companion you could ask for! 🐾

I’m currently in a foster home, but I’m looking for my forever home where I can show off all my positive traits. If you're interested in meeting me, please contact my friends at the Dartmout SPCA shelter and they can make arrangements with my foster parent. I'd love to meet you! [email protected]

Let’s make it official and start our journey together! 💖 Just a heads up – I’m not a fan of really loud noises! 😬

Yours truly,
Baby
