You want what's best for your pet. And. You want the best value. How do you know what that is. Here are a few tips to help you determine value and quality when selecting pet foods. Not all food is created equally.

While doing some searching this morning the following quote from AAFCO's question and answer section was found.

The question was "Who decides what ingredients can be put in a pet food and how is that done?" and the answer was in part "Ingredient cost is a component of a manufacturerā€™s consideration, and $10-per-pound ingredients are less likely to be used in $1-per-pound pet food." In effect, you get what you pay for.

Stay tuned for more.

Find out what limited control AAFCO actually has on the quality of pet foods at this link.

No matter what type of food you choose to feed your pet; we're here to help. You want to make your decisions based on fact and not marketing or misinformation.

If you follow us, you'll know that we are proponents of documentation and correct information and we routinely share that - whether it is related to species appropriate diets, flea and tick treatments, DCM or raw food.

In this case, there is new information in relation to the case of Avian Flu reported by the Oregon Department of Agriculture.

Through a Freedom of Information request - it has been determined that the press release that was 'conclusive' really wasn't.

Make your own decisions, certainly. But we encourage you to make them based on factual information.

Reckless regulatory marketing stokes fear of raw pet food.

Do you have a pet who needs a little more attention than you can provide some times?

Have you tried stuffing a Kong or SodaPup Honey Pot to keep them engaged for a while?

Here's just one recipe you can use to boost their bowl and occupy their time, and minds. Just adjust using foods your pet loves. Add a bit of their food? Add a few tough chew treats like a bully stick or a cow ear? So many options.

Any amount of whole foods, so long as they are pet safe, are beneficial to your pets' diet, assuming of course they are not sensitive to them. Just keep in mind that any extra calories needs to then be reduced when filling their regular bowl. If you're regularly using enrichment feeding tools, make sure to reduce the calories they receive at meal time by a corresponding amount.

Another tip - the amounts of food listed on manufacturer packaging is often too high. You know your pet - you can see if they need a little less, or a little more than what is recommended, based on their unique body composition (just like us) and their levels of activity.

Who says you can't have ice cream in the winter?

You love to share with your pets too, don't you? We do too. šŸ˜Š In moderation and with appropriate foods. New Maple Frozen Goat will be available in store on Tuesday - along with Cookies and Cream and BillyBerry.

When sharing a bite with your pet - be aware of foods that may cause adverse reactions and those that are outright toxic. (There can be debate over items such as avocado, cinnamon and garlic to name a few. Some parts are dangerous, extreme quantities may be dangerous or a certain type may be dangerous.) This is quite different from foods that are simply deadly.

Always make sure that human foods you share do not include ingredients such as Xylitol. Xylitol is a natural sugar alcohol found in plants, including many fruits and vegetables. It is also poisonous to pets, even in the smallest amounts.

Do your pets exhibit allergy symptoms? By definition "An allergy is a state of over-reactivity or hypersensitivity of the immune system to a particular substance called an allergen. Most allergens are proteins from plants, insects, animals, or foods." VCA

Most common allergens include "Most are insect, plant, or animal proteins, but small chemical molecules can also cause allergies. Common allergens include pollens, mold spores, dust mites, shed skin cells (like pet allergies in humans), insect proteins such as flea saliva, and some medications." VCA

Along with a properly balance gut, foods and supplements that promote skin health and boost the immune system can be great tools in helping to reduce your pets' response to allergens.

As pets may have sensitivities to a large number of items (food as well as environmental) it is often difficult to determine the exact cause. Testing is often not conclusive, although expensive. Ensuring that your pet is in overall good health - eating well, not having allergens introduced into your home (think new carpeting, candles, air fresheners, laundry dryer sheets) and properly exercised will give them a head start on combatting reactions to allergens.

As with some people, for those pets with severe allergic reactions, or reactions to a large number of unknows, medications may be required to provide relief. Remember when making care decisions, are you treating the cause, or simply masking the symptoms? Symptom relief is important, but also make sure you are eliminating the cause.

If you have a pet who suffers from seasonal spring and summer allergies, its soon time to start to boost their immune system in a natural manner. Natural products created to support pet (or human) health, need time to build up in their systems to be effective. If you wait until your pet is itching and scratching - it's much more difficult to provide a natural resolution to their problems. Although not impossible.

One of the tools in your tool box available to help relieve your pets' allergy symptoms.

From Blends for Life "Organic bee pollen powder impressively reduces seasonal allergy symptoms and allergic reactions. It also has a variety of essential fatty acids; the most predominant are Omega 3 fatty acids and Omega 6. Bee pollen also contains Quercetin, a naturally occurring antihistamine. Adding Bee Pollen to your dog or cat's diet may help reduce allergy symptoms and allergic reactions while supporting a healthy immune system.

It's antimicrobial, anti-fungal, and antiviral and improves blood flow to the nervous system, helping relieve stress and anxiety. Bee pollen is great for supporting your pet's energy needs & digestion. Gram for gram, it contains more amino acids than beef, fish, or eggs. The product is conveniently packaged in a recyclable jar with a small scoop for easy serving."

What does NN. W9N5 mean? It means that the product is registered through Health Canada as a Veterinary Health Product. This means that "A claim is the statement made about the expected benefits to the animal receiving the VHP.

VHPs are low risk drugs in dosage form. They are used to maintain or promote the health and welfare of companion and food-producing animals. They are not for use to treat, prevent or cure disease.

For example, a product could carry the claim that it ā€œmay help in the improvement of joint health and function,ā€ but not that it is ā€œfor the treatment of osteoarthritisā€." From https://health-products.canada.ca/vhp-psa/en/about/8

The products we carry and offer to our customers are appropriately approved and/or labelled according to regulatory agencies in Canada or the US depending on the country of origin.

We do try to source made in Canada as often as we can.

Black Spruce Co. history

Hi, I'm Mel. Among other things, I am a culinary management graduate and live with my husband John, my kids - Emily and Wade and our dogs - Toby and Bella. I am recreating a life and a lifestyle for myself and my family ā€“ including our pets. Toby is a Border Collie/Golden Retriever mix and Bella, a Malinois/Husky mix and they are the happy taste testers of a lot of our products. Weā€™ve recently added a lovely nearly nine month old Great Pyrenees named Eira to our pack. She is fitting in beautifully if she is still a little timid.

I started this venture by making healthy food choices and snacks for our pets and decided that others may have the same concerns we did; not just with price but questioning what exactly we were putting into our pets and what those ingredients were doing to them?

The more I researched, the more I learned that just because something is safe for us doesnā€™t mean that its safe for our pets; and that most of the products available for pet treats and pet foods out there are full of harmful ingredients. Something that is safe for my dog, might cause yours to have an allergic reaction; just like humans. And catsā€¦they are so much more susceptible to reactions with certain foods and other products, mainly because of their size and body composition; their liver just canā€™t process a lot of what we use on a daily basis.
