Mark your calendars! Grooming with Jade opens March 24th at our Good Hound Village location! Jade comes to Good Hound with almost a decade of grooming experience. She also has the added benefit of working as a daycare handler at Good Hound Village for 6 months- really getting to know our daycare dogs and just what Good Hound is all about. Her kind, patient demeanor paired with her impeccable grooming skills makes her the perfect fit to head up our Good Hound Grooming program. Currently Jade is also completing her Fear Free Grooming Certification.
Meet Jade!
"My entire life, I’ve been drawn to animals. I’ve had many dogs throughout my life, but my current dog, Vonn, is my heart dog. She is the sweetest, most loyal companion I could ask for. We spend our time together earning trick titles, strengthening our bond, and having fun along the way. I also spend time volunteering, including walking a gentle giant of a Saint Bernard for a family in need. When I’m not with dogs, you’ll find me in the gym weightlifting, practicing Pilates, or flowing through yoga to stay strong and balanced, just like the dogs I work with every day.

In the summer, I take every chance to be outdoors, whether it’s camping with family or visiting my property in the interior, or just spending time in local parks with my dog.

I have always had a passion for animals, which led me to a career in pet grooming nearly nine years ago. With years of experience handling dogs of all breeds and temperaments, I take pride in providing quality grooming with a gentle, patient approach. My goal is to make every pet feel comfortable and cared for while helping them look their best!"

The 13th Annual Holiday Charity Drive is back December 1-21!🎁

12 Walks 'N' Wags Pet First Aid instructors have joined forces to collect donation items for our 13th annual Holiday Charity Drive.

From December 1-21, 2024 please drop off your new or gently used clean pet items to any of our 12 drop off locations.

Reminders: Sealed and non-expired food is preferred. Please wash all clothing/bedding if it is pre-used. We will be posting wish lists for each rescue throughout the month - please watch here or reach out directly to us for details.

Thank you for your kindness to the animals who need us! Let's make 2024 the best year ever and help these rescues and shelters!

What does a Reactive Dog look like? Any dog! Any size and any breed! Often we hear people say things like "oh my dog is a lab/golden retriever/doodle so they just love everyone, they cant be aggressive!" Sorry to break it to you, all dogs can be reactive, and this sentiment can be quite harmful. First, it can cause an owner to not train and socialize their dog like they should because they believe they dont have to because of their dogs breed. IE we see more large breed owners in training classes over small breed owners. Second, it can be harmful to the training of that non stereotypical reactive dog. IE many people are more likely to let their dog or kid run up to a leashed lab over a leashed mastiff.
Now, what is a reactive dog? In short, a reactive dog is a good dog having a really hard time! Most (not all) reactivity stems from fear and insecurity. Or maybe they are just a dog who only wants 2 friends instead of many. They are sweet and sensitive souls that we absolutely love. There is no greater feeling than being welcomed into a reactive dog's social circle or helping them overcome their fear.

Summer is almost over- take advantage of it! Good Hound's dog friendly vacation rental in the Shuswap has some availability at the end of August and Labour Day long weekend! Bonus the skies are still clear from smoke and the area is unaffected by the wildfires so far this year. While we LOVE taking care of your dog in our boarding facility, we would equally love for you to be able to go on a stress free vacation WITH your dog! I know our biggest struggle with air bnbs is finding one with a fenced yard. Because when I'm on vacation, I want to just let our dogs out to p*e or relax with them outside without always having to leash them. I think a few of you can relate to that!
Our Cabin, Odin's Place is on half an acre across the street from Shuswap Lake in the quiet oasis of Anglemont. Our property comes in two parts. The lower half has the cabin, patio and is fully fenced. And the upper half has the bench swing that offers an amazing view of Shuswap lake and backs onto more untouched land. We are a 5 minute walk from the Anglemont Marina (paddle board and boat rentals, ice-cream, booze and more!)and 5 minute walk from a secret quiet beach access (only released after booking!) And 10-30min drives to various waterfall hikes! Check out our airbnb listing and book asap if you are interested!

It's Pet First Aid Awareness Month! Check out Walks N Wags feature on your very own, Mallory Richards, Good Hound Owner and Pet First Aid Instructor!

Today, in celebration of Pet First Aid Awareness Month, we'd like to feature longtime Walks 'N' Wags Pet First Aid instructor Mallory Richards.

Mallory offers regular classes in Delta BC, via her business Good Hound Training & Daycare and has been an instructor with WNW since 2016!

We asked Mallory to share a little about her background and here's what she told us:

"Hi, I'm Mallory! I have been a Walks 'N' Wags instructor for over 7 years. Becoming an instructor seemed like the natural next step for me. There are 2 things I am passionate about: dogs and first aid!

Prior to entering the dog world I was a lifeguard, human first aid instructor and pool manager for almost 15 years. So when I, alongside my husband Andrew, entered the rescue world 10 years ago as fosters, the first thing on my list was to get certified in WNW Pet First Aid. If we were going to have multiple, unknown dogs in our house, we needed to make it safe and we needed to be prepared. And I am sure glad we did.

When we decided to open up our first dog daycare, I knew I had to advance and become an instructor for Walks 'N' Wags. First, I love the organization and second, I wanted the tools to teach and certify my own staff and my community. Seven years later, I'm still teaching courses and loving it!

When people who have never heard of pet first aid ask me why? I always say "Pet first aid, like all first aid, is something you hope you never have to do, but will be SO grateful to know in the event that something happens and you need it." Over the years I have used my skills a number of times to treat everything from small cuts to performing CPR and have a whole bunch of interesting stories, but I'll save those for my classes." 😀

As you can see, Mallory is a really passionate instructor. She brings years of "real-life" experience to her courses, and an extra bonus is that she's just a really nice human! We could not be happier that Mallory decided to become an instructor, and that she's stayed with us all of these years!

Reminder to book your dog's summer boarding stay asap! We do fill up in the summer months, and we hate having to decline last-minute requests, especially from our regulars! So if you have already booked your vacation, book your dog's!
If you have not stayed with us before and need to do a trial night, try to book that before June 15th. Due to limited availability in the summer, trial nights are really hard to book. So think ahead and book them now while there is space!

Any stay longer than 7 nights is what we refer to as a “long haul stay”. Long Haul Stays include extra procedures to ensure the continued health of your dog while in our care. After checking in for their stay, a staff member will perform a health check and weigh in of your dog, the results of which are written down on their personal health check record. This allows us to establish a baseline of health for your dog. From there, a staff member will perform a health check and weigh in every five days until their check out date. Any dog with a longer coat, that may be at risk of matting, will also receive a complimentary maintenance brushing along with their health check and weigh in every 5 days. Should a health issue arise during your dog’s stay, you will be contacted via email.

A smiling reminder to book your trial boarding stays now to prepare for your spring/summer board! Trial nights are a great way to introduce your dog to our facility, bondd with some staff and to learn that once you drop them off- you also pick them up! Trial nights set your dog up for success and now is the time to book. If you wait until summer we may not have space so don't delay!

Are you looking to board your dog for the first time? Leaving your dog overnight somewhere can be stressful for both your dog and you! So lets set your pup up for success!
*We recommend first coming in for a field rental so you and your dog can explore and play in our outdoor play spaces. There will be no other dogs in the field so it will be a relaxed and positive first experience where you can also meet some staff. Rentals are available on the weekends at 9am and 2pm subject to availability.
* After a field rental, we recommend a one night stay so we can see how they do in the kennel overnight. Ie if they can settle, make friends (with dogs or handlers!), and eat their meals. A one night stay also helps teach them that once you drop them off, you do pick them up!
*If you are doing a long stay (over 10days), we recommend also doing a 3 night trial so we can see how your dog does once they are here for a longer stay.
*Pack your dog yummy treats and/or meal toppers to make meals more exciting
All of these little steps help your dog get to know us, create some positive experiences with us and build some independence without the added stress of being away from you for too long.

If you are looking for boarding this spring and summer now is the time to do the trials! As spring approaches, we get pretty busy, and these important trials may not be possible due to limited availability. Plan ahead so you and your dog can have a stress free vacation!
