in to train a dog. A dog should do a behaviour because they want to, not because they are afraid if they don't! Andrew will create a training plan that is tailored around your dogs unique needs. His goal is to create a fun and enjoyable experience for you and your dog. Further, he aims to not only produce well trained and happy dogs, but to reinforce the bond between owner and dog as well as to create a clear form of communication between the two. Andrew enjoys teaches basic obedience but he also loves helping dogs with behavioural issues. That is where he makes the most difference as helping families work through their dog's behavioural issues helps keeps dogs out of shelters and in their forever homes. Mallory handles the books and is the training centre's go to for dog nutritional advice! Andrew and Mallory are also certified in Pet First Aid through Walks n Wags

Barnside Harvest Festival is fast approaching! Good Hound is SO thrilled to be a part of this amazing event again. We will be there as a booth all weekend and are working with Barnside to put on a great day for your dogs on the Sunday for the Paw Pals picnic. There will be games, doggy tattoos (yes tattoos for dogs!), best dresses contest, agility courses to try and more!

Have you met Maura and Ember? Maura joined our GH Training team in January as our agility instructor! After a break this summer Agility is returning this fall! Maura will be teaching Recreational Agility on Fridays at 6:30pm and 7:45pm starting next week!
Maura has been involved with the sport of Agility for the past 10 years. Maura entered the world of Agility as a recreational activity to keep her dog busy. But it didnt take long for her to fall in love with the sport. Maura has now competed at both at a local and provincial level.
Over the past 2 years Maura has combined her love for agility with her professional skills in adult education as an Agility Instructor. Maura enjoys sharing her love for the sport of agility and passion for R+ training with her students. Maura has a love for high energy herding breeds and is currently working towards her CPDT certification.
Maura has also participated in tricks, herding, and dock diving with her K9 companions. In her free time, you can find Maura at local agility trials competing with her aussie Ember, hiking local trails, and spending time with family.

What does a Reactive Dog look like? Any dog! Any size and any breed! Often we hear people say things like "oh my dog is a lab/golden retriever/doodle so they just love everyone, they cant be aggressive!" Sorry to break it to you, all dogs can be reactive, and this sentiment can be quite harmful. First, it can cause an owner to not train and socialize their dog like they should because they believe they dont have to because of their dogs breed. IE we see more large breed owners in training classes over small breed owners. Second, it can be harmful to the training of that non stereotypical reactive dog. IE many people are more likely to let their dog or kid run up to a leashed lab over a leashed mastiff.
Now, what is a reactive dog? In short, a reactive dog is a good dog having a really hard time! Most (not all) reactivity stems from fear and insecurity. Or maybe they are just a dog who only wants 2 friends instead of many. They are sweet and sensitive souls that we absolutely love. There is no greater feeling than being welcomed into a reactive dog's social circle or helping them overcome their fear.

Summer is almost over- take advantage of it! Good Hound's dog friendly vacation rental in the Shuswap has some availability at the end of August and Labour Day long weekend! Bonus the skies are still clear from smoke and the area is unaffected by the wildfires so far this year. While we LOVE taking care of your dog in our boarding facility, we would equally love for you to be able to go on a stress free vacation WITH your dog! I know our biggest struggle with air bnbs is finding one with a fenced yard. Because when I'm on vacation, I want to just let our dogs out to p*e or relax with them outside without always having to leash them. I think a few of you can relate to that!
Our Cabin, Odin's Place is on half an acre across the street from Shuswap Lake in the quiet oasis of Anglemont. Our property comes in two parts. The lower half has the cabin, patio and is fully fenced. And the upper half has the bench swing that offers an amazing view of Shuswap lake and backs onto more untouched land. We are a 5 minute walk from the Anglemont Marina (paddle board and boat rentals, ice-cream, booze and more!)and 5 minute walk from a secret quiet beach access (only released after booking!) And 10-30min drives to various waterfall hikes! Check out our airbnb listing and book asap if you are interested!

But my dog needs to be off leash to exercise! My dog is friendly! My dog needs off leash freedom! No, you and your dog need to be following the on leash bylaws and be leashed up whenever indicated. Its for safety (for your dog and other dogs/wild animals) and respect for others and the environment.
BUT that doesn't mean your dog can't have fun! Our dog Odin loooooves the freedom his 30ft biothane long line gives him. This silly guy can still run, sniff and jump around all while being on leash.
(And I love how biothane is stink free and easy to clean!)
Biothane 6ft, 10ft, 20ft and 30ft leashes are available at our Good Hound Village Shop!
