To say we've been busy lately is an understatement and it's the excuse I'm using for being bad at posting regularly. Duck season is almost over and the cold shot looming is going to be the last big opportunity to harvest trophy specimens this season. Lots of new photos were just uploaded in our "duck" section on the website. western-taxidermy.com Check em out!

I’ve wanted to paint fish replicas for many years and I’ve finally gotten into it! Here’s a beautiful pacific chinook. Every single scale is hand painted one by one to achieve the realism that traditional airbrushing can’t achieve. The client wanted a fish that was painted to represent being fresh into the river but as clean and bright as they come considering. We weren’t mimicking a specific catch but commemorating time spent with his sons and father on the lower Fraser over the years.

A handsome Alberta whitetail that went home recently. This deer was mounted with a cape from our spare inventory. If you harvest an animal and for some reason the cape is unusable, we can usually source or provide a replacement for most species.

These table pedestal mounts are a great alternative means of displaying predators. They are suited to coyotes, wolves and all of the cats including cougars or even small bears. The cost is comparable, if not less, than a rug. In many ways it better represents the animal while taking up a lot less real estate. If lifesize doesn't suit your space or budget, consider this as a pleasing option to display your predator trophy.

The anticipation for LEH coming soon is definitely growing. Undoubtedly, many will have their hopes and dreams crushed for yet another season but, a lucky few will pull the tag of a lifetime. A friendly reminder that talking to your taxidermist well before your hunt is something that shouldn’t be overlooked to properly handle and preserve your trophy in the field as well as budgeting ahead of time for your potential mount. Remember that euro mounts are for meat bucks, not trophy rams, billies or bulls 😉. Here’s a pic to get folks excited, a handsome Roosevelt bull that went home recently featuring a custom coastal habitat border and removable antlers to be able to get it into the house easily. I’m gonna hear it for the euro comment aren’t I? LoL Dan - Western Taxidermy

I am thrilled to announce that this Peregrine Falcon that I recently mounted will be up for auction at the 2023 Wild Sheep Society Fundraiser in Kamloops. From what I understand this is the first ever Peregrine made available in BC. It's a privilege to mount such a rare bird and 100% of the proceeds will go towards putting more sheep on the mountain! Thank you Wssbc for the opportunity!

I was a little disappointed this year to not get one single phone call even price checking on a sheep mount. I was a bit late to the game getting this one out for advertising purposes but still? Not one call? I'd love it if word could get around the sheep hunting community about where to go to get a top of the line piece of wildlife art made from their coveted and hard earned ram!

This was a very special mount as it was a young houndsmen’s first cat that he took along with his brother. They hunted this cat in their stomping grounds on Vancouver Island. Cats are considered to be the most difficult animals to mount convincingly. They are a benchmark in the taxidermy industry and few taxidermists do them well. I’m abundantly proud of this mount. Everything about it is full custom. I want to know what you think. How did I do? - Dan Hastings - Western Taxidermy

It's that time of year again! The bears are waking up and a few calls from successful hunters have already started coming in. I know many people are waiting for the weather to warm up so take the opportunity to call us before you go if you need field care advice on your hunt. I have already had one large, stunning colour phase boar brought in that was skinned in haste and ruined for any kind of a mount. I AM MORE THAN HAPPY to spend some time on the phone BEFORE YOUR HUNT to create a plan to ensure that your trophy arrives to us in good form. Good luck this spring!

A few photos of some birds that have gone home in the last handful of days. This is the last kick at the cat for the duck season and the birds are prime. When winter loosens her grip on the lower mainland and some water opens up, it will be the best opportunity of the year to harvest some prime, absolute stud birds. If you get a bird that is worth a second look, please don't hesitate to give me a call. Dan - Western Taxidermy in Ladner. Good luck everyone and Happy new year.

First of all I would like to extend my condolences and thoughts to everyone experiencing hardship with all of the unprecedented disasters we have seen in BC this year. Secondly I would like to thank all of my clients for their patience in regards to waiting for their mounts to be completed. We have had delays getting hides back from the tannery as they were delayed by lack of availability of tanning chemicals compounded with supply issues from the US including covid complications and social unrest. I just recently received my hides that I dropped off almost one year ago and ordered supplies from the States immediately after. That said, I expect those supplies will be some time coming with the mass flooding and local highway closures. I have enough to put together a good amount of the birds that were dropped off last winter. Again I want to thank everyone in their understanding of the situation. I make every effort to keep my turnaround commitments but this year has had many unforeseen challenges that are impeding those commitments. We sincerely value your business and are buckling down to get as many pieces back as close to their deadlines as possible. Thank you and stay safe everyone.

Here is a beautiful great horned owl that went home to a great client recently. This was a stunning specimen that mounted beautifully. This photo really shows off the type of custom base that is included in the price of ALL of our bird mounts. We can also procure the provincial possession permits for raptors to save you the headache of doing it yourself. This owl was purchased from our inventory of already permitted birds in our freezer and mounted to suit the client's wishes. If you are looking for a particular species for your collection, please give us a call. We may be able to source one for you. There is a bunch of new content in our bird gallery on our website: western-taxidermy.com Be sure to check it out and follow us on instagram .

Spring bear season has just started kicking off and I'm sure a lot of people are getting the itch to get out. Before you go, please don't hesitate to call and discuss field care and pricing to help plan your trophy options.

We are excited to be offering this black bear shoulder mount WITH the habitat border for just slightly more than the deposit on an open mouth rug!!! This is a great economical and attractive alternative to a rug and it takes up much less room.

As always, we are able to produce the absolute finest quality rugs you will find anywhere.

I'm also very excited to announce that I now have a trophy drop off location available in Duncan for anyone on Vancouver Island who would like to use our services.
