North of Smokey Fishermen's Association

North of Smokey Fishermen's Association The North of Smokey Fishermen's Association (NOSFA) is a registered, incorporated society representing fishermen in both the Gulf and Scotia Fundy.

The North of Smokey Fishermen's Association (NOSFA) is a registered, incorporated society under the Registry of Joint Stock Companies in Nova Scotia. We have a duly elected Board of Directors with representation from the various harbours along our coastline. The NOSFA is also a provincially accredited organization that has been representing < 45ft competitive, multispecies fish harvesters in both

the Scotia-Fundy (Cape Breton) and Gulf regions of Nova Scotia since 1993. Our organization is unique in that it is the only organization in Cape Breton that represents fish harvesters interests in both the Gulf and Scotia-Fundy regions. Our multi-region representation is reflective of the fact that all of our members are licensed to fish either in the Gulf or Scotia-Fundy areas and regularly carry out their harvesting activities in both regions. Our members hold a variety of licenses including, snow crab, lobster, groundfish, tuna, mackerel, herring, swordfish, etc.

Wishing all our members a Merry Christmas and a happy & safe New Year!

Everyone,

Many of you may have received correspondence from TC Registry in Ottawa regarding changes to renewing registry for a commercial vessel. Automatic renewals have been discontinued and owners are now required to make application to renew their vessel registration. Our Inspectors have been finding that some owners did not understand this fully and are finding vessels with expired or suspended registrations. TCMSS Ottawa has corresponded these changes and have also been sending e-mail reminders to vessel owners prior to their registration expiring (see attached). These reminders will cease after three attempts, upon which time their TC vessel registration will be suspended. If a vessel is found with a suspended or otherwise expired TC registration, a Notice of Deficiency will be issued to the vessel and owner. This may lead to delays in operation.

Below is clarification on how to apply for registry renewal, that has been sent out by our Yarmouth, NS office, with the attached forms.

Please make all of your, clients, members, fishers, etc. aware of this, so their vessels registration remains valid.

Regards

Rob

SENT ON BEHALF OF TODD WILLIAMS, CHAIR, ATLANTIC MACKEREL ADVISORY COMMITTEE (AMAC)

Dear committee members,

After the second portion of the bait fishery closed, on August 18, 2024, the Department has calculated that a total of approximately 439.6 tonnes of Atlantic mackerel have been caught for the purposes of bait, which is 93.5% of the 470 tonne quota. The breakdown of landings is as follows: Maritimes Region (67.5 tonnes), Gulf Region (311.8 tonnes), Quebec Region (37.1 tonnes), and Newfoundland and Labrador Region (23.3 tonnes).

DFO is aware that harvesters across the four eastern regions are interested in seeing the Atlantic mackerel bait fishery re-open. However, any re-opening would likely result in landings exceeding the authorized 470 tonne total allowable catch. The Department also has no intention of releasing any additional quota as the status of stock remains in the Critical Zone.
