A little about our pets of the month!

Emmy (the big white one): Deb got Emmy as a 4 month old puppy and she turns 13 in May! She is a loving, smart, emotional labradoodle and loved to pieces! Her favourite things are playing ball, hiking in the hills and food!🩷

Karma: Karma is one crazy character! She is almost 8 now and Deb got her at 1 1/2 yrs old. Saving Grace Rescue Society brought her up from Mexico. She is energetic, funny and extremely cuddly! We believe Karma is part schnauzer but not sure about anything else. Her loves are exactly the same as Emmy’s 💕

We have some exciting news here at Pet Valu Drumheller.

We are hosting our first ever VIP event and what better way to start events than a puppy social!

There will be limited spots available and for safety reasons there will be some guidelines we need to follow. Check these guidelines out below ⏬️⏬️

This event is to give YOU as new pet owners a chance to socialize with other new pet owners. Give your pets an opportunity to work on leash skills, utilize object that they may not be use too and create proper socialization skills. As this is a limited spot event, it will also give you the chance to talk 1 on 1 with our pet experts Keshia and Storme to learn about things like. Healthy diet, grooming, safe toys and treats for your pup and so much more!

Please book in store and bring your most recent vaccination papers. We can't wait to see you there!

FOUR Purrfectly good reasons to stay on top of your cats dental!

1. REDUCED PLAQUE AND TARTAR BUILD-UP
Tartar and plaque occur when bacteria mixes with saliva, calcifying to form a hard coating on the teeth. Plaque and tartar build-up will eventually result in and worsen conditions like periodontal disease or halitosis (bad breath).

2. HELPS PREVENT BAD BREATH
Keeping plaque and tartar at bay will prevent gum inflammation which, in turn, will keep bad, odor-causing bacteria at bay, helping to keep your cat’s breath fresh and free from foul, rotting smells.

3. DECREASES CHANCE OF ORAL INFECTION
When a cat is suffering from periodontal disease, bacteria in the mouth are penetrating the gums and attacking the supportive periodontal ligament of the tooth. Once this occurs, infection has already begun to set in. Keeping the mouth clean and minimizing plaque and tartar growth will prevent a build-up of bacteria in the mouth and gums, thereby preventing conditions like periodontal disease and minimizing the chances of infection taking root.

4. PREVENTS THE ONSET OF MORE SERIOUS HEALTH ISSUES
If bad oral health is left unchecked, it can trigger a host of secondary illnesses. If bacteria enter the bloodstream via the mouth, it can cause infections and wreak havoc in the heart, liver, and kidneys. Cats with periodontal disease face a significantly higher risk of developing conditions like kidney failure ⁠— taking the time to perform basic oral health routines with your cat can save them from suffering serious, incurable diseases later in life (and it will save you a tonne on veterinary bills).

Believe it or not, the state of your pet’s feeding and drinking dishes play a crucial role in their overall health. Dirty bowls are a breeding ground for harmful bacteria. Wash and scrub their water and food dishes with hot soapy water. Running them through the dishwasher's hottest cycle to get them clean and sanitized is even more effective.

Here are some statistics from the ASPCA:

3.3 million dogs and 3.2 million cats enter the shelter system every year. That total of 6.5 million has declined from the 2011 number of 7.2 million… but much of that decline was dogs.

In 2011, it was 3.9 million dogs, and if you do the math, it shows that the number of cats has only declined by 100,000 (.6 million fewer dogs versus .1 million fewer cats).

The only way shelter cats and dogs are equal is in adoptions. 3.2 million of them find homes, and the number is about the same for dogs and cats: 1.6 million each. That’s still 3.3 million adoptions short so there is much work to be done.

That being said, visit us tomorrow for our Cat Cafe where all kittens and cats present will be up for adoption. Not looking for a new furever friend? Stop by anyways and make a donation and get your cat cuddles in!

Your pet’s teeth and gums should be checked at least once a year by your veterinarian for early signs of problems and to keep your pet’s mouth healthy.

Some tips to help your pets dental health are:
Use a K9 approved toothpaste or spray
Add dental powder to your pets food
Try a dental water additive
Ask your local Pet Valu associates about dental approved foods
Give your pet dental treats
Get regular dental cleanings
Use dental specific toys for play time
