A Home for Hooves Farm Sanctuary

A Home for Hooves Farm Sanctuary We provide a forever home for rescued farm animals who have been abandoned, seized by the S.P.C.A., or surrendered due to various circumstances.

We are a volunteer run, registered Charity organisation in Duncan BC, that offers a forever home for rescued farm animals who are abandoned, seized by the S.P.C.A., or surrendered due to various circumstances. Our Sanctuary was founded in September 2017 and we are the first and only Farm Sanctuary in Canada to be Accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries. We currently care for near

ly 200 residents including pigs, goats, sheep, cattle, horses, donkeys, chickens, geese, ducks, turkeys, peafowl, dogs, guinea pigs, and cats. We ensure all our animals are provided with the best quality care and a safe home where they are able to live out their natural lives. We aim to advance education by providing workshops, seminars, classes, and presentations on animal practices, rescue, and care. In early 2019 we began an adoption and foster program to place healthy and well-suited, non-farm animals in safe and loving homes. Our Sanctuary provides a forever home for farm animals who are older, are difficult to place, have diverse needs, have behavioural issues, or require long term medical intervention. Our volunteers help us with the everyday care of the animals, social media, graphic design, fundraising, newsletter writing, and event planning, and ensure the animals are well cared for and our organisation runs smoothly. We would also like to acknowledge that our Sanctuary is located within the ancestral, traditional, and unceded territory of the Quw'utsun Nation, near the traditional village of Ts'alha'um.

It was bird check up day for during our weekly Veterinarian care visit . Guinevere the goose, who has been limping for a few days , is believed to have sustained a soft tissue injury which will be treated with pain management.

Gerry the turkey was given an overall health exam, she is almost 11 years old 😳. As you can see, her middle digit is quite swollen, which is due to osteoarthritis. She is treated at regular intervals with limb perfusion therapy. This helps manage her pain levels and also reduces the swelling quite significantly.

Blossom is busy hunting for snacks while we’re preparing for the “Bomb Cyclone” that’s about to hit Vancouver Island. We’re all crossing our fingers, toes, and hooves that the worst of it misses us!

Earl is auditioning for The Lord of the Rings Trilogy today, in the battle of BALLRog involving an intense duel with his “indestructible” ball.

"There, in the highest peak of the deepest dungeon, I lay my enemy to waste and smote his ruin upon the mountainside" - Earl the Grey

Don’t worry, we can replace the interior ball and they will have another good several months of play.

Yesterday, Weston underwent spay surgery which was performed by the amazing Dr. Christina Klimaschka at Dean Park Pet Hospital. Not only did Weston undergo spay surgery, she also had her upper incisors removed again because they decided to grow back. She had these previously removed due to severe overgrowth and deformity when she initially arrived in our care.

Any surgery with rabbits is very high risk and we make the special trip to Dean Park Pet Hospital because they are one of the best!

Weston is known as “Ninja Bun” because she has springs for feet and can get into and on top of everything, so she will be on strict cage rest for 10 to 14 days.

Yesterday, Dustyn, from Nanaimo Crane Service, moved 4 buildings to our new location. We are very excited to start relocating structures and move towards the final stages of deconstructing our original location.

We would like to share that Dustyn is fabulous to work with. He’s exceptionally good at his job, he loaded and unloaded the shelters with ease, and he has been wonderful to work with. We highly recommend his services if you should need them and we look forward to working with him again in a few weeks.

We had another emergency intake today due to a predator attack. We would like you to meet The Duchess❤️. She came into our care today after she lost her family to a cougar attack this morning.

The Duchess is currently decompressing in our med unit and we’re looking forward to introducing her to her new flock in the near future.

We would like you to meet Walter, Gladys, and Betty. They recently came into our care due to the farm they were being kept at, as pets, came under new ownership and they were at risk of being sent for slaughter if they didn’t find a new home. Their caregivers had been unsuccessful in finding them a new place and they were desperate to rehome them before time ran out.

They will remain in quarantine until all their lab work comes back and if all is well they will be integrated with our sheep herd.

Walter, Gladys, and Betty are all looking for sponsors and their recommended sponsorship amount is $35/month. Please send us a PM if you’d like to support their ongoing care and we’ll provide with guidance on how to set it up.

This morning was our weekly Veterinarian visit and we had several tasks on the to-do list.

Darwin had bloodwork taken for Johnes, CAE, and CL, along with having a FAMACHA score which assesses anemia. Overall he is in good health and now we await his lab results. Typically we have bloodwork completed before they come in, but his situation was unexpected and urgent due to a bear killing his sister.

Luigi, goat who is cryptorchid, was sedated in order to try and find his undescended testicle via ultrasound. It appears to be by his bladder, but it was also discovered that he has a significant heart murmur. We are hoping the murmur was caused by one of the sedation drugs, so he will be rechecked on Sunday. If the heart murmur is gone then he will undergo surgery on Monday, but if it’s still present, we will need to schedule an echocardiogram in order to determine the cause before we pursue surgery.

Also, we have three new sheep who recently joined us. More about their story tomorrow, but they had bloodwork completed for CL due the samples being lost before intake and a time crunch to bring them to safety.

All in all it was a productive day and everyone is in fairly good health. Our fingers, and hooves, are crossed that Luigi’s heart murmur corrects and he can have surgery as planned on Monday.
