I swear the morning’s are getting colder! Getting everyone posed in the frost, wrestling off gloves, grabbing treats, holding a phone and getting everyone to look in the 5 minute window of passing people is quite the feat in -2! 🥶

Another hike where my unreactive, well behaved dogs have been attacked by another dog. That makes 3 in a month.

The first was a large guardian breed dog who despite being leashed was attached to a small child it dragged across the trail to attack leashed Ruby. We were literally 2 minutes into our hike. The owner and children were apologetic but had zero control of the dog. Spoke to another trail user who said the dog had been off leash and reactive to her dog minutes earlier.

The second was a neighbour’s reactive small breed dog who snarls, barks and tries to chase passing dogs from its front yard. It jumped the very small fence and proceeded to lunge and snap at all three of our leashed dogs. It chased us down the road in between playing chicken with passing cars. The dog had no recall and the owner had no idea what to do. This has happened twice with the same dog. Owner was also apologetic.

The third was today when two fisherman had an off leash dog with them who was obviously reactive. They saw us and tried to call the dog back but it was already running at us. Ruby was behind my legs and it attacked her anyway. The owner had to help me to pull his dog off. Also apologetic but based on his reaction knew his dog was reactive.

Luckily my dogs weren’t injured in any of these attacks but Harry knows full well what happens when it can’t be broken up quickly as does the lovely vet in Jasper who sewed him back up.

Enough is enough. If you have a reactive dog, get some training, don’t allow it to be off leash around other dogs, communicate with other dog owners “sorry he’s reactive” is at least some warning and consider a muzzle or means of controlling it on leash. “Sorry” isn’t enough anymore. Sorry doesn’t pay for vet bills, cover my employment if I get injured and can’t work and certainly doesn’t help the stress and trauma for my dogs. Control your 🤬 dogs in public!

A deceptively busy forest enabled us to play our favourite game of “forest ninja.” Now you see us and now you don’t! Sometimes (always) it’s easier to avoid interactions with people and dogs if we can so we love to silently disappear into the forest. This is beneficial for a few reasons, firstly it helps with our recall practise, it’s easier to turn and burn than leash everyone and also the confusion for people when we disappear is amusing. But today solid 10:10 forest ninja behaviour, not easy with 6 dogs and the world’s noisiest pants!

Building a dream, one dog at a time

As a life long dog owner and lover I’ve often dreamed of turning my passion into my living, and 2018 is the year I’m going to make it happen along with my faithful hound Harry.

I’m 36 and originally from England but have lived in glorious Victoria for five years. In my spare time I can usually be found in the forest, on a beach or heading out for adventures with Harry. I love to run, ride, hike and explore and would love to share my adventures with four-legged friends. I’ve worked in the communication sector for 12 years but have decided to take the leap and follow my dream.

I know the conflict of managing life and work commitments with being a responsible dog owner, and my aim is to provide a reliable, flexible and affordable solution for dog owners. My emphasis is on peace of mind for the owner and a fun experience for the dog. I plan on never walking more than five (ideally four) dogs at a time so each dog can get my attention and have an enjoyable walk.

I’m currently working towards completing my pet first aid certification, finding a suitable insurance policy and building my website, but I plan to be up and running by mid April 2018. In the meantime my faithful partner Jeromy is helping out with some neigbourhood dogs. Exciting and scary times ahead!
