Puppy mills are now illegal after a new Ontario legislature; however, this alone may not be enough to curb them completely as many puppy mills are now considered and running as underground businesses. There are things you can do to help avoid shopping from puppy mills.

How people can help on an individual level:

1. Only Use a Reputable Breeder: The last thing you want to do is support a puppy mill without realizing it. Visit the breeder’s home and ask to see the parents of the puppies. Ask them for health checks/updates on the puppy, too. If the breeder is making any part of this process difficult or is even flat-out refusing to fulfill your requests, then this is a major red flag.

2. Donate: Local dog shelters and rescues need resources to operate, and one of the best ways you can support these shelters is by providing them with donations, either supplies and/or money.

3. Volunteer: Spend some time at a local shelter to help them out.

4. Adopt, Don’t Shop: One way to be certain that you’re not supporting a puppy mill is by adopting directly from your local shelter.

Talk about wearing your emotions on your sleeve! Or should we say beard? 😋

While we might grow beards to stay on trend, bearded dragons use theirs to communicate! For example, a puffed-out, darkened beard is actually beardie-speak for, "Back off, buddy!". But a male might also show off a black beard if he's trying to impress a female, or could be indicating discomfort due to pain or cold.

Puffing out their beard can be a sign of needing space or a male trying to impress a female. It's also normal for them to do this as part of their morning stretch routine! 🦎💬

So if you have a beardie, pay close attention to their beard! 🧔‍♂️ Watching their body language can give you great insights into their mood and needs. ❤️

Did you know lionfish are surprisingly curious creatures? 🐠 While they’re known for their dramatic appearance, with vibrant stripes and venomous spines, they’re also quite inquisitive about their surroundings. This can be a bit of a challenge during tank cleanings, though, as their curiosity might lead them closer to your hands than you’d like. 😬

A tip for aquarium hobbyists: always keep an eye on your lionfish and perhaps distract them with a small feeding on the other side of the tank to keep those spines at a safe distance!

Meet Bella, the bravest bird in town and our Pet of the Month! 🎉 🦜

At 10 years old, this green-cheeked conure has some stories to tell - like that time she laid eggs. And that other time when she somehow ended up inside a dog’s mouth and lived to tell the tale! 😮 She’s also got a soft spot for chia seeds, cheese, and butter, and has a strange beef with cutlery and dishes... 🤔 😂

She’s a true character who loves new people and snuggling with her family. Bella's definitely a little bird with a big personality! 💕 Thank you so much to Bella’s mom for sharing with us!

Cockatiels need daily time out of their cage to stretch their wings and play! 🦜

The recommended amount is 2-3 hours of free time each day, but why not go for more if you can? Studies show that cockatiels that are out of their cages for about 8 hours a day are happier and healthier, and less likely to develop problems with plucking.

This month, our award is shared between two of the best boys around—Homer and Archie! 🐾 They’re kind of a package deal, and honestly, just look at those faces. How could we ever choose? 😍

Homer and Archie are quite the characters. Archie’s more of a 'OMG EVERYTHING IS AMAZING' kind of guy, while Homer’s got that 'I've seen it all' old soul kind of vibe. We swear we even heard him sigh when we told him he won this award. 😂 No worries, Homer - we know it’s tough being so adorable. And we appreciate you keeping Archie’s wild side in check. 😉

Homer’s past lives have clearly taught him the art of mealtime, because he has this uncanny ability to know the exact moment food is supposed to arrive! Archie might be a bundle of energy, but he also happens to be an emotional genius. He can always sense when you need a toy to cheer you up. ❤️ Together, they make the perfect team. 🐶 🐶 💕
