Boreal Veterinary Centre is excited to welcome Cardiology to our growing list of Specialties! Dr. Nathan Boyd and his team are already accepting referrals and will start seeing appointments January 15, 2024. Keep reading to learn more about our Cardiologist! Dr. Boyd received his doctorate of veterinary medicine from the University of Pennsylvania in 2018. After graduation, he completed a small animal rotating internship at the University of Minnesota followed by a cardiology specialty internship at Kansas State University. He then finished his cardiology training with a three-year residency with Chesapeake Veterinary Cardiology Associates in Virginia. After becoming board certified, Dr. Boyd relocated to Edmonton with his partner.
While Dr. Boyd enjoys all aspects of cardiology, he has special interests in pulmonary hypertension, diastolic heart disease, and cardio-oncology. Outside of work, Dr. Boyd is an avid runner and cyclist. He also enjoys kayaking, fishing, and hiking with his golden retriever, Rise. When the weather takes a turn for the worse, however, he prefers to spend time indoors watching TV shows with his cat, Marta. Dr. Boyd is excited to see what Canada has to offer and to care for the pets of the Edmonton community!

Boreal Veterinary Centre is excited to introduce our new medical oncologist, Dr. Jennifer Hay!
Dr. Hay completed her Bachelor of Science at the University of Alberta and received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. She then completed both a rotating and specialized oncology internship in a private practice in Calgary, Alberta followed by a residency in medical oncology at Kansas State University. After becoming board certified in 2022 Dr. Hay worked as an oncologist in a private practice in Maryland for a year prior to returning home to the Edmonton area.

While she enjoys all aspects of oncology, she is particularly interested in lymphoma treatment and ways to maintain the best quality of life for her chemotherapy patients. In her free time, Dr. Hay enjoys running, watching hockey, hiking and spending time with her partner and their Golden Retriever (Rise) and cat (Marta).

Aurora here reporting for duty! Today was my last day with the super surgery team! I was able to learn about anesthesia and their ventilators. I monitored the patient and they even let me hold a scalpel! One of the team here was such a Silly Sally, she kept calling me “Chuckie” for some reason? They are so funny! I’m going to spend my last few days here spreading Christmas cheer and help the team prepare for Santa’s arrival!

Aurora here, reporting for duty! Just wrapped up my week with internal medicine. They are specially trained to solve diagnostic problems, manage severe long-term illnesses, and help patients with multiple, complex chronic conditions. We did lots of lab tests. Did you know Boreal Veterinary Centre has a fully equipped in house lab?! Then we did some endoscopy. I put a camera down a dog’s esophagus and saw he had some candy canes in his tummy! You can also put the camera where the candy canes come out of him 😉💩! Going to rest up for my last week with surgery before Santa picks me up on his way home!

Aurora reporting for duty again! This week I spent some time in the emergency department! They showed me how to use this ultrasound machine. The first lesson was DO NOT DROP THE PROBE! Fluffy presented with some difficulties breathing. So I used the ultrasound to identify some fluid around the lungs. This is called pleural effusion. The fluid makes it hard for them to breathe because they can’t inflate their lungs. Luckily, we were able to do a thoracocentesis (we removed the fluid with a needle and syringe). You guessed it! Fluffy’s fluid was… Syrup! She is now recovering in the fancy Intensobox. We can flood this cage with oxygen and then when she is feeling better we can wean her down to room air. We can also adjust the temperature and the lighting. Such a cool machine ! Thanks !!Tonight I’m working my first overnight in the ER, I have heard it can be pretty silly here. Can’t wait! Keep following along so I can show you more about the very cool equipment they use here!

Aurora here reporting for duty! A busy first few days! I got to help with a blood transfusion!! I learned all about canine blood types and cross matching. Did you know that there is a canine blood bank here in Edmonton?! collects blood from healthy volunteer donors and distributes it to hospitals all over Alberta! They have blood drives just like the Canadian Red Cross! If you have a dog that would like to help save a life please contact them! Where I’m from we just transfuse syrup and there is no shortage of that! After I helped with the transfusion, I spread some cheer and helped to decorate this tree. Looking forward to more excitement tomorrow!

Hi! My name is Aurora and I am from a remote northern community.
I will be spending the next few weeks with the team at Boreal Veterinary Centre because I’m working towards my Doctor of Stuffed Animal Science (DSAS). Contrary to popular belief, I am not a scout elf. Santa already knows the team here is on the nice list!
Along with my studies, I look forward to bringing some Christmas Cheer!

This is a great example of why we encourage people to take their pets in for their routine check ups with their primary veterinary hospitals. Ivy was a seemingly healthy puppy who went for her check up and her primary care veterinarian was able to pick up a heart murmur which lead to a complicated diagnosis. Special thanks to Ivy’s family for letting us share her story!

Let's take a moment to remember and express gratitude for those who selflessly gave their all. Their contributions have shaped our world, and their memory lives on in the freedoms we cherish today.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, alongside Orange Shirt Day stand as a day to commemorate the legacy of residential schools and acknowledge the lasting impacts on the survivors, their families and communities, while
honoring the children who never returned home. Recognizing this painful history is a vital piece of reconciliation. It opens up the opportunities for education and awareness as well as discussions for effective change that requires Indigenous and non- Indigenous peoples to work together to create an environment free from racism and discrimination in which all people feel safe and respected.
We offer our gratitude to the Metis, Inuit, and all first nation peoples of Canada whose histories, languages, cultures and traditions continue to enrich our vibrant community. Boreal Veterinary Centre is open 24/7 this weekend and Monday October 2 to offer support to our veterinary colleagues who want to observe this day.

Boreal Veterinary Centre is committed to providing quality patient care.
With a documented workforce shortage in Canada right now, we are often asked how we are going to meet the needs of our patients.
We have taken a unique approach and added in an additional role to our care team. Their primary role will be to develop relationships with your pet! They will encourage them to eat, offer healthy treats, sit in the grass with them and provide environmental enrichment for them like toys, kongs or if they are shy, a nice soft box to hide in. This will allow our medical team to focus on saving lives! Stay tuned for information on our Client Care Team next week!
