UVB lighting 💡

Do they need it?
We recommended that every reptile has the supplemental UVB lighting. This is essential in most reptiles for synthesis of vitamin D3, which in turn helps them absorb calcium.

When to change it?
It depends on the specific bulb you have. Some of the brands will expire after 6 months where as others last as long a as year.

What are the benefits?
- helps with the synthesis of Vitamin D which is important to systemic health especially bone 🦴 density
- some animals will have an increase in normal behaviours including basking and activity

Is there such thing as too much UVB?
Yes! we recommend a cycle of 10-14 hours of UVB light being provided.
- We do not recommend having it on for longer as this could have negative effects
- Different species need different strengths of UV light, some may even need a partial shade method
- all animals should have the chance to hide from the light when they chose

One example of problems we can see is that when the UVB is left on too long or is too strong for the reptile you own, it can actually cause “sun burn” like lesions on them.

If you have any questions or would like more information on UVB please let us know !

Ducky’s Special Story ✨
Ducky originally presented to Dr. Dorey (Park Veterinary Centre) for lethargy, weight loss, and a mass in the abdomen that was determined to be an enlarged spleen. Bloodwork indicated that most of her blood volume was contained in the spleen, which means Ducky desperately needed a blood transfusion. She was referred to Dr. Ogle here at HPAH for these procedures. With the help of her brother and another positive ferret match, we were able to successfully transfuse blood and proceed with a total splenectomy. We at Harvest Pointe Animal Hospital cannot say thank you enough to the families involved for helping Ducky. She is making a remarkable recovery 🤍

Some great tips for birdie baths!

Does your feathered family member not like bath time? Try these options:
• Purchase a perch for in the shower
• Run the sink to see if they want to play in the stream of water
• Offer a shallow bowl of water in the cage
• Use a spray bottle
• Use a mister bottle (usually sold for reptiles) if your bird prefers a more gentle bath
