“Equine Osteopathy is a combination of spinal and extremity joint manipulation, visceral (organ) manipulation and cranio-sacral therapy. The fundamental philosophy of osteopathy is that for the body to be truly healthy and vital, every tissue in the body must have proper mobility, thus affecting flow of blood, lymph and nerve impulses. Osteopathy treats the whole body.”
Osteopaths use a broad range of gentle hands-on techniques including soft tissue stretching, deep tactile pressure, and mobilization or manipulation of joints. I have spent years Studying the Equine Anatomy and I will always be a student! I am not someone that just took a 4 day course and call myself certified! I also have been a human Therapist for over 15yrs. Rehabilitation and physiotherapy for humans was a big part of my life for many years and still will be on the teaching side of things. I travel all over Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan, Ont, Yukon

Today let’s talk about H**p!🌱 What is h**p, and why is it good for your horses? I want to explore h**p and, more specifically, Perfect Balance’s H**pOlive oil.

I truly believe that this is one of the best supplements you can be giving to not only your horses, but dogs and cats as well (I even cook with it! 😆). I began feeding this oil long before I had the opportunity to work with the company. Before I sing my praises let’s look at the benefits! 🌱

This is a extremely well filtered H**p oil (meaning you don’t get the layer of unfiltered sludge that may occur with other h**p oils). It is infused with extra virgin olive oil. To begin, let’s look at the components and benefits of H**p oil:

H**p oil contains 8 B vitamins, 20 amino acids and 9 essential amino acids. It contains the correct ratio of 1:3 Omega 3s and 6s which is essential for long term consumption in your horse. Essential amino acids are so important because, just like essential fatty acids, the body cannot synthesize them on its own, therefore they must be absorbed through the diet.

H**p oil contains an additional essential fatty acid; Gammalinoleic acid (GLA). GLA is an omega 6 essential fatty acid (EFA) that is not found in some other oils such as the Camelina oil. This EFA helps in reducing inflammation throughout the body. GLA also assists in the production of the hormone prostaglandin. *Studies show that prostaglandin is low in mares who are reactive during cycling*. H**p oil is potent in Stearadonic acid (SDA) which is an omega-3 fatty acid that has been associated with decreased platelet function, lowered blood viscosity, modulated inflammatory processes, and lowered blood pressure.

H**p oil also contains:
Vitamin A: which contributes to good vision, eye health, a strong immune system, healthy skin & muscous membranes.
Vitamin C: An antioxidant, decreases radical antibodies, and an immune booster.
Vitamin E: Fat soluble antioxidant that is especially important for the neuromuscular system.

Compared to other oil's mineral content, such as flaxseed oil, for example, which has no mineral content, H**p oil contains several minerals which are very important for the health of your horse. These minerals are:
1. Iron: For growth and development, used to make hemoglobin for blood and myoglobin for muscles and important for synthesizing some hormones.
2. Zinc: Helps the immune system fight off bacteria and viruses, is needed to makes proteins and DNA as well as it is needed for proper growth and development.
3. Calcium & Magnesium: For muscle repair and development and for proper chemical exchange when firing neurons and muscle synapses.

Okay! so now that we’ve looked at the h**p oil component let’s not forget that this oil is also infused with extra virgin olive oil which provides some fantastic additional benefits to what h**p oil has already put forth. It is not common to feed extra virgin olive oil to horses, so let us look at some of the benefits of feeding it:
Extra virgin olive oil contains a variety of nutrients such as Vitamin E, beta-carotene, unsaturated fats, saturated fats and monounsaturated fats. Extra virgin olive oil contains an abundance of anti-oxidants such as tocopherols, b-carotene, lutein, squalene, lipophilic and hydrophilic phenols. It also contains Vitamin K, which H**p oil does not have! Vitamin K promotes blood clotting and bone health. Olive oil also contains a unique component called oleocanthal. Oleocanthal increases immune function, reduces free radicals and is a natural anti-inflammatory (studies show it works similar to ibuprofen).

*Research papers, in animal studies, show that olive oil and its compounds may fight Osteoarthritis by preventing damage to the cartilage.*

A special thanks to Shantel Perreal for the very in-depth research article on the H**pOlive oil that I had the pleasure of reading, and sourced much of this information.

With all the rain we have been having footing has been a slick and mucky! Add weather change on top of that and you might notice some soreness or stiffness with your horses! It’s very important to make sure you warm them up properly at the beginning of your rides to prevent injuries or strains. Start off slow and get the blood moving and work on softening them so they’re nice and supple before throwing them into work. This will give them time to work out any stiffness or kinks and also give you the opportunity to make sure they’re sound!
If you are feeling like your horse is off or in need of a little extra TLC I do have last minute openings this month! The beginning of December is booking up so shoot me message or give me a call if you’re wanting to get your horse looked at so we can make something work! I know December can be a crazy month for everyone so I will try to be as flexible as possible to make sure your horse is getting looked after!
