Meet Zoey! Zoey came to us with some issues breathing, likely secondary to her underlying asthma (sometimes referred to as Feline Allergic Bronchitis). We use a number of diagnostic tests here in the ER, but when it comes to breathing, we very often perform x-rays to help us get a better visualization of the lungs. A pet has to be in a number of positions for x-rays, so that we can get a full picture of what is going on. When they have to lay on their back, we will provide them with a padded trough to make it more comfortable for them. After her x-rays were done, Zoey enjoyed the coziness of the trough so much, that she just decided to snuggle up in it.

What are some common holiday hazards to avoid this season to keep our dogs and cats healthy?

High fat foods
- While we may have some different delicious foods around this holiday season, they could have the potential to cause stomach upset in our pets.

Toxic foods
- There are some foods that are seen more around the holidays that are toxic for pets. These can include raisins, chocolate, and macadamia nuts.

Candles
- Many people light holiday scented candles, but beware of wagging tails! These can be knocked down easily.

Stressful events
- Larger social gatherings are common this time of year, but they can be quite stressful for our pets. We risk a pet getting out, running away due to anxiety, and we can even see urinary issues in male cats. Ensure all pets have a quiet, safe area where they can seek refuge from the hustle and bustle.

Ornaments
- Bright and fun ornaments for us can sometimes represent new chew toys for pets. Dogs and cats may chew on ornaments and tinsel, and these could cause damage to the intestines, and possible obstructions.

Plants
- There are a number of plants, including lilies, poinsettias and mistletoe, which can be toxic to our furry friends, and is important to keep away from them.

Please have a great holiday season with your family (furred and unfurred included), but letā€™s keep everyone safe! If you have any concerns with your pet at any time, day or night, we are always here to lend a hand! You can call us at 825-480-4881, or you can come in. We are located at 11212 178 St NW.

Today's post is about FLUTD - Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease. This is a somewhat common condition we can see in cats, male cats especially. Common symptoms can include urinating in abnormal places in the house, straining to urinate, pain when urinating, and sometimes the inability to actually pass urine. Causes can be urinary crystals (pictured here), urinary tract infection, and occasionally (but not as commonly), we can see a urinary tract infection. We have been seeing a lot of cats with these symptoms lately, and sometimes we can see an influx during holiday seasons, when cats may be under a little more stress than normal. We recommend trying to minimize stress as much as possible for your cats - which could mean having them in a quieter area of the house during holiday get togethers, or avoiding too many loud noise-making ornaments. They should always be provided with plenty of water, and a quiet area where the litterboxes are kept. If you are ever concerned that your cat is having issues urinating, it is important to have them evaluated ASAP by a veterinarian, as complications can be seen.

Please know that we are here for you and your pets, 24/7, through the whole holiday season. Call us anytime at 825-480-4881, or come in to see us at 11212 178 St NW.

Exciting news! Our lead RVT and office manager is expecting her first baby!

That means we will be hiring to cover some maternity leave. The positions we are looking for are:

Registered Veterinary Technologist (RVT): Our RVTs provide emergency care to pets in critical situations. They are quick on their feet and are crucial to helping the animals that come through our doors.

Receptionist/Customer Care: our front end team is the first point of contact for any pet presented to the ER. They know how to prioritize, recognize common emergencies and keep pet parents calm - some might call them expert ā€œchaos coordinatorsā€!

If either of these positions interest you, reach out to [email protected] for more details or to apply. Both positions are for maternity leave coverage, but there is high potential for extension! For the right candidates, both full time or part time opportunities can be discussed.

Cleo came to see us as she was vomiting at home, and had vomited up some foreign material (a rubber door stopper). With suspicion for more, we did x-rays and found that there appeared to be two more rubber door stoppers inside (Can you see them? We point them out in picture #3). For that reason, surgery was done to remove them. She recovered quickly from surgery, starting to eat not too long after. She was discharged this morning to her loving family, no doubt to continue her troublesome puppy ways!

ā€œIā€™m in my final year of the Veterinary Technologist Blended program through Lakeland College!

Itā€™s like Iā€™ve finally found my calling šŸ’•šŸ¾ā€
