Hi friends! Quick update: I broke my ankle mid-April and have been healing pretty slowly so I've had to take a lot more time off than I expected. I am however finally coming back on June 10th!
Things are gonna change a bit for a while so I am temporarily (maybe) offering a new service!
Introducing: Private park off leash walks and day training!! Currently only available on Wednesdays.
Details: group off leash walks at a fenced, privately rented park. Walks will be 1.5-2 hours long and pricing includes the park rental and travel time. Dogs must be social with other dogs and calm in the car. $60/dog
I will also be offering a day train program for dogs who need some extra support on social skills and recall to join the smaller Wednesday group. Only taking 1-2 day train dogs at a time. Pricing includes park rental and travel time. $80/session.
Service areas for these new services are currently only in the millwoods and surrounding areas, Capilano and surrounding areas, and Sherwood Park.
If you're interested please send me a message or email [email protected] ππ

Why are Yikes! Dogs group dog walks best for your dog?
π
We utilize seatbelts and separate areas/crates during travel!
π
Why is this important?
π
It makes for a safer and more comfortable ride for your pup! Group dog walks involve picking up multiple dogs and traveling to and from the park. For some dogs, the travel time can be quite long. We make sure each dog is safe and has a separate space if they need, which is one of the many ways Yikes! Dogs ensures that your dog has the best experience possible on every walk. We never have more than 4 large dogs in our cozy open space, we have two large kennels in the back for dogs who like their own space and even a safety-tested seatbelt in the passenger seat for those passenger prince(ss)s. This setup reduces stress, prevents tension between dogs and keeps your dog safe and secure!

Too-small muzzles can cause many issues including breathing issues, overheating, choking, stress, negative associations, increased reactivity due to uncomfortability, rubbing and bruising and so much more. Panting is a necessary function for a dog's well being and health. Dog's don't just need space to pant to regulate body temperature, they should also be able to drink water, eat food/treats, yawn, even vomit without choking. Too-big muzzles can be just as uncomfortable and increase risk of the dog pawing it off or injuring themselves. There are many great resources I can recommend if you're not sure the fit for your dogs muzzle.
makes custom-fit vinyl muzzles and is based in Ontario
muzzle.movement has different sizes of plastic cage muzzles and is based in the UK
Both ship worldwide and are working very hard to provide XL Bully guardians with well-fitted and comfortable muzzles.
Have you taken your dog to local dog daycares but they failed the assessment? Or maybe they've been going to daycare but seem stressed and overstimulated when you pick them up? Or maybe they've been going to daycare for a while, seemed to enjoy it, but have been causing trouble lately?
There could be many reasons for your dog to struggle with daycare. From someone who has worked in dog daycares for over 7 years, I know that they can be extremely overwhelming for most dogs. Spending a whole day in a group of unknown dogs is very unnatural for domestic dogs, and can be the cause of some reactivity or arousal issues from the constant stimulation and no proper rest. Dog daycare staff are also often not trained in dog behavior and many (actually most unfortunately) facilities commonly use punishment techniques (spray bottles, shaker cans, verbal and physical corrections) to control large groups. Thankfully we are blessed in Edmonton and do have a handful of enrichment based force free dog care facilities.
Yikes! Dogs group walks are FOR those social pups who have failed their daycare assessments by no fault of their own, or are struggling with the constant go-go-go of the daycare setting, but still need an outlet for their energy just with more room to move. We are the daycare alternative with smaller groups, consistent dogs every week, constant skill building.. each dog has the space and safety to reach their full potential. To build super strong bonds with each other, practice and strengthen off leash cues, communicate and move freely without being punished for being a dog. That's why we created our groups this way, to embrace every dog and meet them where they are. β¨οΈ

Bridging in dog-dog play! What is bridging? Bridging play is a technique used to help dogs learn how to play safely together. A human will facilitate and control play between two dogs who are learning each other's play styles. These two dogs are new friends and still getting used to each other. The bigger brown dog has some resource guarding tendencies over valuables (toys, treats, mom), and the little dachshund is more timid and just super tiny in comparison so close supervision is required to ensure that everyone is having a good time and feels safe. I'm sitting in between the two dogs in order to control the play and watching body language closely for any stress signals. The brown dog is handicapping herself (laying down, holding the toy gently) while I help the little dachshund bite and pull the toy. I stopped this interaction as soon as the bigger brown dog stood up to keep things safe. Short little moments like this are great for building trusting relationships between new dog friends! #yikesdogs #fearfree #dogplay #dogtrainer #positivereinforcement

Something I see quite often is dogs who struggle to leave the dog park. I mean, I get it! The dog park is a super stimulating environment for most dogs so it makes sense that going home can be punishing to some. Your dog playing keep-away with you at the end of your park date can also be so frustrating and embarrassing! Here are a few tips to help curb this behavior. . Number 1, practice leashing up during your walk! If the leash means "fun's over", no wonder they want to extend their play time! This also gives you an opportunity to practice some skills for a few seconds while they're leashed up, such as a loose leash walk, a sit or down behavior, maybe a cute trick. Then release your dog back to play! You can see in this video I unclip the leash AND give a release word "you're free" to send Persephone back out to romp. . Number 2, keep it fun! Reward every single recall you practice during your walk, no matter how long it takes them to get to you. . If you're struggling with your dogs recall, my Unleashed Program is perfect for you! Haaappy 2nd Birthday to Yikes! Dogs!!! I absolutely loved going through these old photos and seeing truly how far we've come since we started October 12th 2021. Some of you have been with me the whole way, and some have come along the way and I'm so grateful for every single experience we've had through the past 2 years. Running a small business has been the biggest challenge I've ever taken on and I've dealt with so much burn out trying to keep this going, and we've done it! Yikes! Dogs truly would not be where it is today without my AMAZING clients, fellow dog professionals and friends and family who have supported me through it all. We made it! Woohoo 2 years!! π₯³π₯°ππ . . . #yikesdogs #yegdogs #fearfree #yegdogparks #decompressionwalk #reactivedog #dogwalker #dogtrainer #edmontondogs #supportsmallbusinesses

Reactivity training done correctly should look BORING! The goal is for your pup to be able to see and be around things that would normally trigger them without any reactions. Working under threshold will allow your dog the ability to change their feelings about things they find scary or exciting, and make them positive or neutral using yummy treats and positive reinforcement. If you're working on reactivity and your dog isn't reacting, you're doing it right!! . I am still taking training clients if you are in need of some support π send me an email to [email protected] . . . #yikesdogs #yegdogs #fearfree #yegdogparks #decompressionwalk #reactivedog #dogwalker #dogtrainer #edmontondogs #supportsmallbusinesses
