Alfie's Adoption Story ❤️

When Alfie first arrived at EHS, she was a wiggly, excitable puppy, eager to greet everyone with her tail-wagging enthusiasm. But behind that playful energy was a tough start—she had come from a difficult past and was looking for a family to show her what love truly meant.

Enter Jesse and his wife Janoa, who instantly fell for Alfie’s goofy charm; "We were so happy that she didn't seem to be timid or fearful". Despite everything she had been through, she was just a happy pup ready for a fresh start ✨ Now, Alfie is thriving in her home, filling it with laughter, zoomies and a whole lot of personality. She’s very vocal, always making sure her humans know exactly how she feels and though she weighs over 60 lbs, she remains fully convinced she’s a lap dog.

One of Alfie’s favorite things? Making new friends! Jesse shared; "Alfie loves to go to the dog park and daycare where she can play with other dogs.". Whether she’s playing at daycare, or simply lounging at home, she’s always up for fun. And last summer, she went on her first-ever camping trip with her new family and canine sibling 🏕️🐶

Alfie’s journey is proof that love, patience and the right family can change everything. Now, instead of facing uncertainty, she’s looking ahead to a lifetime of adventures—and maybe a few extra couch snuggles along the way 💛

Charlie's Adoption Story ❤️

When Charlie arrived at EHS in 2022, he was in need of some TLC—his fur was matted, and it was evident he had faced some tough times. However, from the moment Teresa and her husband discovered him wandering around a construction site in Edmonton, they could tell he was truly special and deserving of a fresh start. They brought him to the Animal Care & Control Centre and left their contact information just in case. Weeks later, fate stepped in. "When he went up for adoption, the Edmonton Humane Society called us to see if we were interested in adopting him, and without hesitation, we immediately said yes," shares Teresa.

Now, fully healed and absolutely thriving, Charlie is more than just a beloved pet—he’s a certified therapy cat 🏅 His gentle, affectionate nature made him a perfect candidate for the Pet Therapy Society of Northern Alberta, where Teresa tells us, "He passed with flying colors!" 😻 He now visits long-term care homes, offering comfort and companionship to those in need. His transformation from a stray in need of care to a source of joy and healing is nothing short of inspiring.

When he’s not out making the world a better place, Charlie enjoys napping, playing and indulging in his favorite snack—churro treats. And if you’re lucky, he might even give you a high five in exchange for one ✋🐱

Charlie’s story is a reminder that every animal has the potential for a bright future—sometimes, they just need the right person to believe in them 💙

Elodie’s Adoption Story ❤️🐾

Some dogs quickly bond with people when they enter a shelter, while others, like Elodie, need time to trust.

When she arrived at EHS in the fall of 2023 after being found as a stray, she was unsure of people and needed time to feel comfortable. She kept her distance, even from food, and was hesitant to approach. She was quiet and reserved, taking everything in at her own pace. It was clear—Elodie needed more than shelter; she needed time, patience and the right people to help her open up again.

Placed in foster care with a friendly dog to show her the ropes, Elodie was still cautious, keeping to herself and occasionally trying to find her way out. Then, her soon-to-be dad visited. He sat with her quietly for over two hours. That small moment of simple, patient presence—of understanding—planted a seed of trust. The next day, she was a little calmer.

But trust takes time. Elodie found a moment of freedom and took it. Three days passed, and hope began to fade. Then—she returned. On her own, to the very people who had started to earn her trust.

Slowly, Elodie started to heal. First, no longer needing to be carried outside. Then, walking on a leash. Now? She’s the best running partner for her mom and the ultimate video game and movie buddy for her dad.

Elodie still has fears, but every day, she’s learning what love feels like. And her family wouldn’t have it any other way 💙🐾

It's World Spay Day 🐾

Did you know that one unspayed cat can lead to over TWO MILLION kittens in just eight years 🚨

Today, we’re reminding pet guardians that spaying & neutering is the best way to prevent unwanted litters and reduce pet homelessness.

Our PALS (Prevent Another Litter Subsidy) program offers subsidized spay/neuter services both in-shelter and through our mobile unit in the community during the summer, helping pet guardians facing financial challenges prevent unwanted litters.

In 2024, the PALS program spayed and neutered 600 cats and dogs, including 226 surgeries performed in the mobile unit!
