Tasso’s Adoption Story ❤️

When Sophie first met Tasso (formerly known as Flyer) at the Edmonton Humane Society in 2022, it brought back fond memories of her childhood. “It was nice to find a bird that reminded me of when I was a kid and my dad had the same bird,” Sophie recalls.

Tasso, a lively canary, has since filled Sophie’s home with constant cheerful chirps. “He chirps all the time, and I love how he has different chirps to communicate with the birds outside,” Sophie shares.

Did you know that canaries are known for their beautiful singing? These little birds have been cherished for their melodic voices for centuries, and Tasso is no exception. His songs are a daily delight for Sophie, making every day a little brighter.

One of Tasso’s favorite activities is taking baths. “He likes to take baths a lot," says Sophie. "It’s cute to watch him!" Canaries are known for their love of water, often splashing around in their birdbaths with pure joy.

Tasso’s chirpy personality and love for baths have brought endless joy and nostalgia into Sophie’s life. “He’s more than just a pet – he’s a reminder of the happy memories from my childhood,” Sophie reflects.

If you’re considering adopting a pet, remember that sometimes the smallest companions can bring the biggest joys. Come visit the shelter today to find your own special friend 💛🐦

Join Our Team as a Dog Trainer! 🐾

The Edmonton Humane Society is on the lookout for experienced dog trainers to join our Canine Enrichment Center as contractors. If you have a passion for helping dogs and their guardians, this is the perfect opportunity to make a difference!

As our Head Trainer, Klara W., shares: "Leash Reactivity is one of the most challenging but rewarding classes. Seeing dogs around their triggers without reacting is amazing—it brings tears of joy!"

Our unique training courses stand out with outdoor training pens, play sessions for young dogs, and even a pool for enrichment. If you're ready to bring your expertise to our team, we want to hear from you!

DeeDee’s Adoption Story ❤️

When Silken first met DeeDee (formerly known as Gummy Bear) at the Edmonton Humane Society in February of this year, she was immediately captivated by her beautiful coat and unique personality. Though shy and timid at first, Silken spent the entire afternoon gaining her trust. "I knew she wouldn’t be the most confident cat and would need to come to you on her own terms – but that didn’t stop me."

Over the course of that afternoon, Silken's patience paid off. "With some time and courage, I was able to pet her on her back," Silken shares. "If it was on her head or around her ears, she’d swat at you, but I could see the sweetness in her and knew she deserved a home where she could enjoy a quiet household with another furry friend by her side."

DeeDee’s personality has since blossomed. "She’s definitely a talker, always sharing the latest gossip and making sure she’s nearby for pets," Silken says. "She has this adorable habit of staring at you from across the room, and she loves giving our older cat little headbutts – something I’ve never seen before. You can’t be alone for one second, she even cries to join me in the bathroom just to get some attention and more pets of course."

DeeDee’s appearance is just as unique as her personality. "The lighter hair around her head looks like a lion’s mane, and it’s the cutest thing," Silken adds.

When she's not cuddling with her new furry friend or following Silken around, she’s going wild over her favourite catnip toys. "She goes crazy for them, doing flips and tricks, bouncing from wall to wall – it’s amazing to see. She follows not only me but our other cat everywhere!"

DeeDee’s journey from a shy, timid cat to a loving, playful companion is a beautiful reminder of the power of patience, love and a little time. "She’s brought so much joy into our lives, and adopting her was one of the best decisions we’ve made," smiles Silken.

Sometimes the most rewarding relationships come from giving a little extra time and love. Visit the shelter today to find your own special companion 💞

Today is National Check The Chip Day 🔍

Did you know that pet licencing and microchipping helps thousands of lost animals find their way home each year? But this only works if the information is up-to-date! The American Veterinary Medical Association reports that 1 in 3 pets will get lost, and sadly, only 6 out of 10 microchips are registered.

Microchipped dogs and cats have a significantly higher chance of being reunited with their families. Today, we’re reminding you to Check the Chip! Call or visit your local vet’s office to make sure your contact information is current. Remember, microchips are not a replacement for collars and tags, but they can make a big difference in bringing our friends home ❤️

Learn more about Pet Identification, including types, the pros and cons of each type, and common questions in our helpful guide here:
https://bit.ly/3WP0rPZ

For Edmonton residents, the Animal Care & Control Centre - Edmonton includes a microchip with a purchase of your cat’s licence. To participate in this program, all you have to do is book an appointment, show proof of ownership and ensure your City of Edmonton cat licence is valid. Learn more here:

Rocky's Adoption Story ❤️

When Jasmina first saw Rocky, a playful German Shepherd, on the EHS social media channels, she felt an instant connection. "Rocky kept appearing multiple times over my social media for two months," Jasmina recalls. "The fourth time, I applied and knew he'd be coming home with me once I got the phone call and learned about him. Upon meeting him, he was uninterested in us and just wanted to play with his ball. But once we got home that afternoon, his personality quickly started to come out, and I love him more every day."

Rocky, who was adopted in March, has proven to be a huge goofball with a love for his ball and playing catch – though he often forgets to return the ball! His unique personality shines through his playful antics and talkative nature. "Rocky is extremely cuddly and affectionate," Jasmina shares. "He loves to wake you up with morning kisses and enjoys singing the song of his people, warning us of the dogs on TV. He's a great listener and loves to go for long walks. He also loves getting brushed and rewards you with head butts and slobbery kisses. He likes to help with whatever you're doing."

Rocky's favorite activity is anything that involves throwing a ball or frisbee. "We like to go to the trout pond," Jasmina adds. Rocky's playful nature and loving personality have brought endless joy to Jasmina's life. "Adopting Rocky was one of the best decisions I've made. He has brought so much joy and laughter into my life," she says.

Rocky has also become a special companion for his grandpa, Jasmina’s dad. "I go away for work regularly, and he’s become grandpa’s other half. He has helped with his cancer and is keeping him active and happy. They go for long walks together and enjoy snuggles on the couch!" Jasmina shares.

If you're considering adopting a pet, remember that the perfect companion might just be waiting for you. Visit EHS and find your own special friend!

Daisy’s Adoption Story ❤️

When Tara visited EHS in December 2023, she was on the lookout for a new kitten to join her family after the passing of their beloved 18-year-old cat. “The kittens we saw were adorable, and we could have adopted any of them easily. But I had seen Daisy's picture on the website and wanted to have a quick visit with her,” recalls Tara.

The moment Tara opened Daisy's cage, this curious and calm kitty bounced out, never taking her eyes off Tara. “She was so curious and calm when I petted her. I knew then that this was the cat for us!” Tara explains. That very day, Daisy, formerly known as Mia, found her new home.

Since joining Tara’s family, Daisy has shown her true colors as a curious and lovable companion. “She cuddles with me on the chair, sleeps at the bottom of my bed and waits for me outside the door when I shower,” says Tara. Daisy’s unique quirks, like sitting in a puzzle box or sprawling across unfinished puzzles, have brought endless joy to her new family.

Daisy’s favorite activities include playing with her scratching posts, jumping on top of dressers and taking walks with Tara down the hallway of their building. “Daisy has brought so much love and joy into our lives. Adopting her was one of the best decisions we've made,” Tara shares.

If you’re considering adopting a pet, remember that sometimes the perfect match might just be a little different from what you initially had in mind. Come meet the wonderful animals at the Edmonton Humane Society and find your own special companion 💞

Cowboy’s Adoption Story ❤️

Kerri-Lynn knew she had found her perfect match the day she came in to do some volunteer work with her colleagues at EHS one afternoon. “We got to spend the time with the animals and they, in turn, provided us with the joy and comfort that only animals can do,” explains Kerri-Lynn.

That’s where she met Cowboy for the first time. “The first moment I saw Cowboy, I felt an immediate connection to him,” says Kerri-Lynn. “He was a puppy full of energy; he had just tipped over his water bowl and made a mess of his room. I instantly fell in love; I knew this was the dog for us!”

They booked a meet and greet with Cowboy the following day. “After spending about an hour with Cowboy, my husband also fell in love! He had such an impact on us both; so much so that we left with our new family member,” smiles Kerri-Lynn.

It has now been five weeks since Kerri-Lynn and her family brought home Cowboy for the first time, and he is now living his best life. Kerri-Lynn explains that he is now crate-trained and sleeps through the night. He has learned to sit, lay down and settle. “He is getting more and more confident and learning new things every day,” exclaims Kerri-Lynn.

Adding Cowboy to her family has been a wonderful experience for Kerri-Lynn. “Adopting Cowboy was one of the best decisions we have made! He has brought us so much joy, and our bond is growing stronger everyday,” describes Kerri-Lynn.
