THE SKINNY ON LIBRELA – what is happening?!?

- The FDA has issued a warning for veterinarians about Librela. There have been reactions to this medication which have resulted in neurological issues (seizures, paralysis, urinary incontinence) and in some cases it has resulted in death of the patient. This is a very small percentage of the millions of doses that have been administered.
- For our clinic Librela is a SECOND line pain control medication.
- We will not use Librela with patients that have known neurological issues for example, Intervertebral disk disease. The reason is that this drug inhibits nerve growth factor which is needed for nerve repair.
- We are monitoring new research on the side effects of Librela on cartilage.
- Nerve growth factor is a major pain pathway. Librela acts to inhibit this pain pathway and has been effective as a pain killer in cases that are musculoskeletal (arthritis) or for patients that have an underlying disease that prevents them from taking a NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) like Metacam, Onsior and Galliprant.
- We carefully screen our patients for pre-existing neurological disease to help minimize the risk. Unfortunately, all drugs come with risks and benefits that are best discussed with your veterinarian. In many cases it becomes a quality of life issue.
- In many patients, this drug has increased their mobility and greatly increased their quality of life when other drugs have failed on their own or cannot be tolerated.
- While our clinic has not experienced any issues, we recognize that it is possible. We will continue to monitor for any updates, keeping your dog’s safety as our top priority.
- If your dog is on Librela and you are worried, please call us to ask questions. We are here to help

This is Shantel’s senior dog named Grizzly. He has issues with cataracts, inflammatory bowel disease, allergic skin disease, orthopedic issues, hearing loss and more. He takes his medication and he remains happy and comfortable with his dedicated mom. We are so grateful that he gets to have another Christmas. He is fresh from the shower in his teddy robe in the following picture rocking his senior years. We love you Grizzree❤️❤️

Loki came to us last year with a warning from mom that “he’s cute but he’ll take your face off”. We have worked with happy visits and cooperative care with the help of his very dedicated mom. Today Ashley and I were able to gently sedate him and he was still wagging his tail and wanting head rubs when he woke up. Loki had a snack then had another nap in my lap. This is the feeling that can’t be matched, the one that made me choose this profession. Loki you were so brave and have come so far ❤️❤️❤️. We love you!!

With those classic stripes and a mischievous stare, Tycho was the crowd’s favorite little “inmate.” Congrats to our lovable “bad kitty” on this well-deserved win! ❤️👮‍♀️🐾

Congrats to our lovable “inmate” on her well-deserved win! Who knew being a "bad dog" could be this cute?! ❤️👮‍♀️🐾

Our kitty contest winner will be announced shortly!
