The 20th annual Tails on the Trails Family Fun Day & Pledge Walk is scheduled for Saturday, July 20th, 10am-4pm, (rain or shine) with lots of great activities for you and your pet. Join us for the day and participate in the pledge walk, check out the great vendors, bid on some silent auction items, do some puppy yoga, and then grab a burger and head to the beer gardens!

What areas do we work in? Working with our partner facilities we reach a fair bit of the Edmonton area. You'll likely find us right in your Edmonton neighbourhood and from Stony Plain and Spruce Grove to Sherwood Park and Tofield, from Devon to Fort Saskatchewan and Leduc to Morinville. Even extending our possible facilities from Camrose, Athabasca, Warburg, Wetaskawin and Rivière Qui Barre.

A lot of our facilities are looking for teams now, have a look on our website to get your canine or feline partner ratified with us to help fill the needs in our communities! Our next testing date is the 8th of June.

The prescreen day consists of an obedience test in the morning and temperament testing in the afternoon for our canine partners. Our feline partners have only a temperament test for the afternoon. Meet Nemo and Sabrina, another dedicated volunteer PeTS team.

“She's a Hollywood star and I'm just her agent,” Sabrina jokes.

“Nemo has always been a social and talkative cat, so I knew from the start that she would be successful as a therapy cat. She continues to surprise me with how adaptable she is to new situations. As long as there is somewhere to lounge where people can pet her (and worship her), she's more than happy.”

Sabrina was looking for a way to volunteer and connect with like-minded people when she came across PeTS.

“Animals have played a huge role throughout my life, and I think the best part about volunteering with PeTS is connecting with others over our shared love of animals. No matter your schedule, you'll be able to find something that works for you. It is such a fun experience being able to spread the joy and warmth of pet therapy with others.”

This is Hank, a dedicated pet therapy dog/certified good boy in his element.

Since 1995, dedicated volunteers have been taking their pet dogs and cats to hospitals, assisted-living facilities, prisons, schools, corporate offices and more to share the joy of animals with others.

Pet therapy continues to grow in popularity because of the amazing benefits that come with interacting with animals. Here are just a few:

• Decreased stress and anxiety
• Improved mood and mental health
• Decreased feelings of loneliness
• Development of social skills
• Behavioral improvements in youth

PeTS volunteers visit all kinds of facilities - from hospitals and long-term care facilities to prisons and corporate offices.

Volunteer Lynne and her pet therapy dog Kohko (pictured) recently stopped by the Alberta Health Services Cross Cancer Institute to bring smiles to many staff, patients and their families.

Lynne says that “pet therapy is such a hit at the Cross Cancer Institute and so well accepted. I’m honored to be a part of it.”
