Gearing towards a greater Edmonton where animals are treated with compassion and respect, and are cared for so no animal is left homeless.
Greater Edmonton Animal Rescue Society (GEARS) is a non-profit organization. (822791430RR0001)
Our purpose is to:
1. Identify and take into immediate foster care, animals that are:
a. Stray, abandoned, or homeless
b. May face homelessness due to owner death or placement in a higher level of care
c. Owned by someone leaving an abusive situation
2. Train and rehabilitate rescued animals, bringin
g out their full potential. All animals will receive vet care as required, and will be vaccinated and spayed/neutered prior to adoption.
3. Find suitable approved foster and adoptive homes for rescued animals based on animal characteristics and an in-depth screening of potential homes.
4. Provide education and assistance to adoptive homes, ensuring the permanent welfare of the adopted animal.
5. Educate the public on GEARS mission, vision, and goals, as well as responsible pet ownership, animal interaction, and animal welfare.
6. Support and collaborate with local organizations and businesses with the goal of improving the lives of animals in Alberta.

Jason is about 4.5 years old and has spent some time in a loving foster home, where he has made incredible progress and is now ready for his next adventure.

Jason’s Personality: Jason is a loyal and affectionate dog who loves to be close to his people. He enjoys playing with toys, running around outside, and even swimming in the river during the summer. Jason is known for his fluffy coat and his love for pets and cuddles. He can be a bit shy with new people, but once he gets to know you, he becomes your best friend.

Dog Friendly: Yes, but can be selective with dogs bigger than him

Kid Friendly: Older kids recommended
Jason has been working on his social skills and is muzzle trained for safe introductions to new people. He has also been on Fluoxetine to help with his anxiety and will likely need to continue this medication. Jason is very vocal and loves to communicate his needs and feelings.
Rescue Story: Jason came into GEARS’ care as a transfer from a partner organization. Initially, he was very nervous and unsure of new people, but with the help of his foster parents, he has come a long way. He still requires slow and proper introductions to new people, but he has shown great improvement and is ready to find his forever home1.

Marty’s Personality: Marty is a delightful and affectionate cat who loves to play and cuddle. He enjoys playing with all kinds of toys, especially balls, and gets quite excited around catnip. Marty is known for his unique crooked back, a result of a malformed vertebrae, but this doesn’t stop him from running around and having fun.

Rescue Story: Marty came into GEARS’ care as a stray along with his momma, Tasha, and 5 siblings. After spending time in a loving foster home, he’s now ready to find his forever home. Marty would do well in a low-key household where he isn’t forced to exercise excessively. He would also benefit from having another young cat to play with.
Medical Note: Marty’s future adoptive home needs to be aware of his vertebral malformation and the potential for future mobility issues. Despite this, Marty is currently behaving and mobilizing like a norma cat.

As 2023 comes to a close, I am overwhelmed with gratitude as I reflect on the incredible support our community has shown us throughout this past year. In the face of many challenges, the unwavering assistance and dedication of our supporters have been the cornerstone of our ability to continue our mission of rescuing and rehoming animals in need. The year 2023 presented us and all rescues, with unparalleled demands. Never before have we seen such a high number of animals looking for placement and pet owners asking for assistance. From the devastating forest fires to the housing crisis we all have been inundated with requests for help. We have seen many large vet expenses, from multiple CBLO surgeries, to overnight emergency stays. We have had some losses, that leave our hearts hurting. Despite these hurdles, we managed to facilitate 155 adoptions this year. Our Sheltered Paws program has been instrumental in ensuring the safety of 94 cats from Strathcona County, keeping them away from the harsh elements of the outdoors. The recent introduction of our Guardian Angel Program signifies a renewed commitment to expanding our outreach and assisting even more animals in distress. Looking ahead to 2024, we are excited for a year of growth and progress. The anticipation of the return of our Petals and Paws gala in April fills us with excitement, providing an opportunity for a night out with great entertainment, delicious snacks, and an amazing silent auction. We are working on plans to streamline processes and build volunteer engagement. We acknowledge that there's still much to be done, but with the continuous support of our community, volunteers, and partners, we're eagerly embracing the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. Together, we will make a significant difference in the lives of countless animals, and we can't wait to see what the future holds. Compassion motivates us to help, heal, and alleviate the pain of the animals we encounter.
