Gearing towards a greater Edmonton where animals are treated with compassion and respect, and are cared for so no animal is left homeless.

Greater Edmonton Animal Rescue Society (GEARS) is a non-profit organization. (822791430RR0001)
Our purpose is to:

1. Identify and take into immediate foster care, animals that are:
a. Stray, abandoned, or homeless
b. May face homelessness due to owner death or placement in a higher level of care
c. Owned by someone leaving an abusive situation

2. Train and rehabilitate rescued animals, bringin

g out their full potential. All animals will receive vet care as required, and will be vaccinated and spayed/neutered prior to adoption.

3. Find suitable approved foster and adoptive homes for rescued animals based on animal characteristics and an in-depth screening of potential homes.

4. Provide education and assistance to adoptive homes, ensuring the permanent welfare of the adopted animal.

5. Educate the public on GEARS mission, vision, and goals, as well as responsible pet ownership, animal interaction, and animal welfare.

6. Support and collaborate with local organizations and businesses with the goal of improving the lives of animals in Alberta.

Hi everyone! My name is Banks and I'm pretty much a big puppy still! I am super curious and I want to smell everything. I really love playing with my foster brother and all of the other friends I've met here! I am an excellent sleeper and do not need to go out throughout the night. I learned how to ring the jingle bells to ask to go outside too! I really don't mind sleeping in my kennel and I often put myself back to bed there in the morning, but I sure wouldn't say no to a bed near you. I really like the small humans but I don't always remember how big I am. I try and I'm mostly gentle! I'm a happy go lucky boi and still learning something my foster home calls "manners". I'm quite smart and am food driven. I don't resource guard though and I'm good with all types of dogs. I warm up pretty quickly to everyone I meet, especially if you want to play with me. I love an ice cube and I'll trade almost anything for almost anything (lol). You have a treat and I have a toy? You have a toy and I have a toy? Let's trade! I'm really excited to find my furever home and I hope to meet you soon.

Hello everyone, my name is Beatrix, and I am a cuddle bug who loves attention! But if you tell me to go lay down I will. I am also polite, gentle, and love to play. I know how to sit, give a paw and bring back a ball when it is thrown. In fact, my favorite thing is to have my foster mom throw the ball at an enclosed dog park. My foster mom has been working with me so that I don’t pull so hard on walks and am not reactive when seeing other dogs. I would love to have an active person to take me for walks...I would be a great companion!

I have no problem with being left alone! I have a kennel, and my foster mom found I was such a good girl that she didn’t feel I needed to be kenneled when she went out. I do need to be introduced properly to new people as I get scared. I sleep in the living room all by myself and sleep through the night. I am also potty trained but do like when someone comes out with me.

I am a smart girl who is food motivated. I just need someone to spend the time needed to help me learn. I am really hoping that will be you?

Hello, my name is Oreo! I am affectionate and playful. I love learning and being exposed to new things. At first I was timid around other dogs and strange new sounds and experiences. I am not as surprised or bothered by new sounds now and am keen to spend time with other dogs. Walking with my two australian shepard buddies opened me up to the joys of walking and exploring the great outdoors! I like playing with all kinds of toys and am fond of chew treats. I like chasing balls and am getting better at bringing them back.

I know how to sit, and am getting better at "lie down" ans "stay". I am almost fully house-trained. I ring a bell hanging on the door to let my foster family know when I need to go outside to “do business.” I am an excellent sleeper, but may need to go out once at night.

I like my crate and am ok with short periods on my own. I get very attached and struggle with being alone for extended periods. I really think I would do well on a fenced-in farm or a home with a big backyard. I am so looking forward to meeting my new family! Is that you??

Rescue Story: Pumpkin Pie came into GEARS' care through our Sheltered Paws program after him and his momma and siblings were found as strays. After time spent in a loving foster home, he is now ready to find his furever home!

Meow there, I'm Pumpkin Pie, but my foster family calls me Pumpkin, Pump, or kitty! I am very inquisitive and eager to get to know all the humans and animals who come into my home. My big foster dog sister is pretty shy, so I try my best to show her a lot of love by following her around and laying beside her when she lays down. When she pays attention to me, I like to puff myself up, stand on my hind legs, and make myself as big as she is so we can play together. I'm pretty sure I'd be great living with another playful kitty who likes to chase balls, run laps around the house a few times a day, and then settle down on the cat tree or window sill to watch birds, leaves, and snow moving outside. I'm not a fussy eater. If you put it in my bowl, I will put it in my belly. I do like a clean litter and will monitor your skills as you scoop it, then test it out immediately after you're done. I may try to run under your feet occasionally as you're going up or down stairs, so I suggest holding onto a handrail if you think I'm awake. I'm a fan of cat and dog beds to chill on by myself while my foster mom works from home, but when my foster family members are all at school or in the office, I get a bit lonely and tell them loud stories when they get home. I like climbing up onto laps and into your arms when you request it, but also when you don't. I'm an adorable kitten. How can you resist me? I think I would like a friendly, playful dog (any size) or kitten/cat buddy who will hang out with me while my people aren't home and maybe a grade school human buddy or two who like to drag a string behind them for me to follow. That would be Pumpkin Pie heaven. I think that's it. But if I forgot to tell you, I'm adorable, everybody loves me, and my foster family and dog may be a bit sad to see me go, so send pictures when I do something cute, k?

Hi! My name is Scully and daintiest little lady you'll ever meet. My dream is to be in a calm household where I can find my own space and open up in my own time. I take a long time to get comfortable with people because I am very nervous but once you've won me over, I love to cuddle and play! My favorite things to do are cuddle on your lap or beside you, play with hair elastics and small toys, and watch cat TV (aka the window). Sudden movements and loud sounds really scare me. I really like to have my own place where I can hide and feel safe. Right now, that place is the bottom of my cat post. Despite how jumpy I am, I really do enjoy the company of people! I will make sure I am always close when you are home and that you are personally escorted throughout the house. I'm the perfect balance of clingy and independent 🙂 In my current foster home, I live with another cat. We tolerate each other's presence but we do scrap frequently. I'd be best in a home with no other cats. I am very precious and gentle and would love nothing more than a calm household so that I can be comfortable playing and being the spunky little lady I am!

As 2024 comes to a close, we reflect on a year of challenges and achievements at GEARS. Rescue work has never been harder—slower adoptions, more owner surrenders, and rising stray numbers have stretched every rescue, including ours, to capacity. Yet, we remained committed to quality care over quantity. This year, we welcomed 157 cats and 76 dogs through our programs like GAP, Sheltered Paws, ABGOV, and adoption. Despite slower adoptions, 150 adoptions were facilitated, though many animals still await their forever home. If you’re ready to adopt or foster, visit www.gearsrescue.org. Our community made this possible: 🐾 Volunteers who screen applications, care for animals, drive supplies, and more. 🐾 Donors who support us through fundraisers, monthly contributions, and wishlist purchases. 🐾 Partners in pet stores and vet clinics who provide crucial support and care. This year marked our first full year since merging with CAWS. Their team’s dedication has been invaluable, and we’re honored to have welcomed some of them onto our Board. We’re excited to expand programs like Sheltered Paws, increasing capacity for strays in Strathcona County, and launching a TNR initiative for feral cats in 2025. While we’ve faced losses, we take comfort in knowing every animal we cared for felt love and compassion. Our Story

The Greater Edmonton Animal Rescue Society (GEARS) was formed in 2013 to help injured, abandoned, unwanted, and homeless animals in the Edmonton area. Compassion motivates us to help, heal, and alleviate the pain of the animals we encounter. GEARS is a non-profit, charitable organization (822791430RR0001) that relies on a network of volunteers and foster homes working together to give companion animals a second chance at their forever family.
