I am so grateful for my incredible dogs (Gracie, Flo, Rysk, and Wim), who I get to work, play, and compete with. These guys make me laugh everyday and I love them so incredibly much there are no words 😍😍😍. Flo is my wild child who is ready to seize the day at all times. Rysk is a very serious worker but a complete goof outside of work, Gracie is super chill, and lives for pets, and Wim is a feisty little turkey with a touch of quirkiness.

Every day with these dogs fills me with joy and I am forever grateful to the breeders who selected me to have them (except for Gracie because I scooped her up from a shelter). Give your dogs some love today!

Happy from Flo, Wim, Rysk, and Gracie. I unfortunately never met Gracie as a young puppy. I got her from a rescue organization when she was a year old. I managed to find a photo of her not long after she joined my family though! Wim is still a puppy, Rysk is a giant (older puppy), Flo remained a puppy in my eyes the longest, and Gracie (my senior girl) still gets mistaken for a puppy. Lots of love from my puppies to your puppies today 🥰. Puppies are hard, but they don't stay this cute and hilarious forever; let them be little and enjoy the ride. 🐕🐩🐶

Another treadmill has gone to it's new home. Aspen the and her brother are hopefully going to love their new toy. Aspen's owner is doing a great job introducing the treadmill to her by stepping on the track so it doesn't move (shown in the video). This is a great start to building a good association with the treadmill. Nice work! Using this treadmill is pretty easy, but I'm still looking forward to helping them introduce Aspen to it while in motion so everything goes smoothly and Aspen has a positive experience 🙂. Gracie, Rysk, and Wim went to the vet to get their vaccines yesterday (Flo was done last month). Here's Gracie and Rysk patiently waiting their turn to get their physical; they were both VERY excited to meet the vet!!! The vet always tells me it's a pleasure to see my dogs.... but having dogs that are confident and well mannered isn't a matter of luck. This took quality socialization, desensitization and counter conditioning to things they showed apprehension about, and lots of obedience skills. The end result is very nice citizens at the vet. Good doggies 😊😊😊.

Schatzi's family sent me this photo shortly after their training session. They said little Schatzi was passed on in the car just moments after her session was over. It's a lot of work doing all the thinking and learning and playing ❤. Can't wait to see her again next week!

Moo Moo got a haircut and you would not believe she's the same dog! Oh my gosh she looks absolutely adorable with her hair short or long 💖💖💖. But what I'm most proud of is that she was quite happy when her family picked her up from the groomer... which is a goal we've all been working towards. Still a ways to go to help her feel more safe with grooming activities but her family is doing a super good job with her!!!

Gracie loved EVERYTHING. Rysk liked everything but the blueberries. Flo really loved the edamame. Little Wim liked the raspberries best, but still ate everything. I'm having a really fun time finding unique, healthy, whole-food toppers for my dogs.

I'm currently reading "Forever Dog: The Surprising New Science to Help Your Canine Companion Live Younger, Healthier and Longer." The authors encourage encorporating more fresh, whole foods into your dogs diet. I was already doing this to a degree, but I'm making sure to do it more and with greater variety now. If you want to do the same, make sure to cut back your dogs kibble so you aren't adding extra calories to their meals, just substituting some kibble calories for fresh, whole foods 😊.

Today's meal contained:
-Kibble
-High quality Omega 3 oil
-Recovery joint supplement (for active sport dogs)
-Coconut oil
-Chickpeas
-Edemame beans
-Raspberries

All the items were a big hit with my gang this morning.

I have a very special announcement today because I'm welcoming MY new puppy to . Please meet IN SYNC'S ON A WIM (Wim is intentionally misspelled to fit my naming theme). A new puppy wasn't in my plans for a couple of years but when a chance to co-own this munchkin with my friend (the breeder) presented itself, I couldn't turn it down. He has everything I am looking for in a small agility dog and I'm really excited for our future together. For those who will inquire, he is a ( x ). When I first met Gabby, she wouldn't even come into the Training Studio. She also wouldn't take food from my hand. Fast forward to current day and she LOVES training in the studio and will happily take treats from my hand! I've been working with Gabby, the #lagottoromagnolo, for many years. In the beginning she was very anxious about having her paws touched (just touched, not even nail clips). But, look at her now! She's standing freely (no constraints) and happily having her nails clipped. She's relaxed and taking treats. I started teaching Cleo "on-your-mat" today, and she picked it up quicky. For me, "on-your-mat" is a multifaceted skill because it means to do three things (go to the bed, lay down on the bed, and stay on the bed) rather than just one thing which is the norm for many other cues. In other words, I don't want to ask the dog to lay down, and stay, when they get to the mat; I want those behaviors built into the cue. So, when I teach this skill, I build all the behaviors together, at the same time. I also subsequently work on sending to the mat from father away so eventually you can cue the dog to go to their mat from a distance (e.g. when your making dinner and you want to send the dog to their mat in the living room). Cleo demonstrates a 5-8 foot send, plus an independent down and stay (until released) in her very first session. Do you have a dog or puppy that gets super active in the evening? This is sometimes refered to as the "witching hour." There is a biological explanation for this; dogs are #crepuscular, meaning they are most active at dawn and dusk. If you would like a way to calm the evening chaos, try feeding your dog a little later (7:00-7:30 pm) from a frozen Kong. If you've perfected making frozen Kongs (like me 🙂) it should take your dog a significant amount of time to get through one, keeping your home cool as a cucumber. Just check out how calm my household is this evening... with three very happy, very entertained dogs. It takes my dogs 45+ minutes to get through these masterfully stuffed Kongs. Flo got 1st place in Starters Jumpers 1 in our AAC trial this weekend and earned her first Q (i.e. qualifier towards an agility title). If anyone is interested in learning introductory agility skills in a private setting, please check out my Boredom Busters package at TCSdogtraining.com. We can do all kinds of tricks and jump skills and if you like the sport, I can recommend a bigger facility to move to. It's a great package for shy dogs that could benefit from a quite place to learn and build confidence 😊.

If you want to be able to clip your dogs nails without fuss, start building a positive association with nail clippings early (you can do this with an adult dog too however). I like to clip my dogs nails in this position (just a personal preference) so I start by building a lot of value in this position. Note that if your dog is older or has a sore back you may need a pillow for them to lay on, or this might not be a good position for them. Once the dog is totally relaxed in this position, I'll start to build a positive association with paws being held, and then paws being held and clippers coming near to the paw, and then paws being held and clippers touching the end of the nail, and eventually to clipping the nail. I'm using associative learning (i.e. classical conditioning) to turn in each these steps into the predictor of something positive (e.g. a food reward). As you can see, in the first few repetitions, I don't actually clip any nails, but eventually I do clip some, and Rysk is very calm and comfortable. If you need help with cooperative care, please reach out 😊.

My clients always ask for for long-term chew suggestions. I love food frozen inside of Kongs. Look how well these frozen Kongs entertained my dogs; they were at this for ~45 minutes! If this strategy isn't working for you, try different things in the Kong until you find the combination of food/treats that will keep your dog entertained for an extended period of time. These Kongs contain some broken pig ear peices, a combination of kibble, a swab of peanut butter, and some liver treats. Then they were filled with water to create a frozen ice cube treat inside the Kong. I use plastic wrap and an elastic band over the bottom of the Kong to keep the water in while they are freezing. Also, each dog has the appropriate size and density of Kong. Black for my heavy chewer Gracie, red for my average chewer Flo, and a smaller pink Kong for my puppy Rysk! #dogchewing #dogenrichment #puppyenrichment #dogchews #thecaninescholar
